Posted: 26 May 2016 03:03 PM PDT

asus-zenfone-3

We're days away from the ZenFone 3 event on May 30th and leaks for the phone just keep on coming. To recap, ASUS is expected to launch not one but three ZenFone 3 variants this year at Computex 2016; the ZenFone 3, ZenFone 3 Deluxe and ZenFone 3 Max.

zf3_gfx

While the specs other juicy details for the ZenFone 3 were leaked last week, now a GFXBench listing of the phone supports the previous leak by confirming the exact same specs.

The regular ZenFone 3 (model number Z016D) is set to feature a 5.5-inch 1080p display, a 2.1 GHz Snapdragon 820 SoC with the Adreno 530 GPU, 4GB of RAM and for the first time, 128GB of internal storage. As for the camera, the listing shows the rear camera as 21MP and the front as 8MP.

All variants are going to run Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and will feature a new ASUS ZenUI that hopefully is more lightweight.

Pricing is yet to be announced for any region, let alone Canada but that is expected to come out during the event.

Skype's 7.0 Android Update Boasts A New Multi-Panel Interface For Tablets

Posted: 26 May 2016 11:43 AM PDT

tablet-9e280b3-chat1I'm going to be perfectly honest: I avoid Skype like the plague, because its Windows client is legendarily awful. I actually install it and immediately uninstall it every time I need to talk to someone who only uses Skype. Perhaps the Skype Windows developer team should accept a little help from the mobile side, because the latest release looks really good, especially on tablets. The Skype blog announced a revamped tablet user interface in version 7.0 of the Android app.

Samsung teases Batman edition Galaxy S7 edge that’s coming soon

Posted: 26 May 2016 08:46 AM PDT

Samsung isn't a stranger to launching products that have themes, especially recently with superheroes. Last year the company launched a Galaxy S6 edge with an Iron Man theme. This year, Samsung's decided to go with the Distinguished Competition.

Samsung took to Twitter to officially tease a new variant of the Galaxy S7 edge is on the way, this time with a Batman theme. There's a big "Coming Soon" emblazoned over the silhouette of the phone, along wit the Batman symbol for good measure. The tweet reads "Coming soon: A new device for the battle against the Gods Among Us," including several different Twitter accounts.

The interesting part here is that this Batman edition of the Galaxy S7 edge isn't a themed device in line with marketing for the recently released Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, like the Iron Man-themed phone was for Avengers: Age of Ultron. Instead, the Batman phone is marketing Injustice: Gods Among Us, a fighting game that's been available for consoles for quite some time (since 2013!). It's also available on Android.

If the Iron Man edition of the Galaxy S6 edge is any indicator, then this Batman edition of the Galaxy S7 edge will have all sorts of tweaks to help it match Batman's color scheme and other elements. Plus plenty of software, including wallpapers, on board to really spruce it up, too.

Would you buy a Batman edition Galaxy S7 edge?

AmpMe Now Lets You Synchronize YouTube Music Across Multiple Phones

Posted: 26 May 2016 08:43 AM PDT

ampme-youtube-1

We've followed AmpMe's development ever since its release in October last year as a multi-device music streaming experience, and we've liked it more with each update, especially when it added local music as an audio source and then implemented an offline mode. This latest update, however, is definitely one of the most promising as it opens up the app to a whole slew of new music: AmpMe is adding YouTube as a music source.

Slacker Radio's developers are no slackers when it comes to reinventing the app and redesigning it. Over the last three years, they've gone through one and then two major redesigns, and now they're ready for the third along with a major update to their audio catalogue.

The app's interface has seen a big redesign with larger play actions and simplified My Music and Offline sections. But the biggest change is the introduction of new original content to complement Slacker's music and audio offerings.

Galaxy Note 6 To Be Renamed Galaxy Note 7 In Order To Align With Galaxy S Series

Posted: 25 May 2016 08:44 PM PDT

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Silver

Samsung is expected to release the successor to the Galaxy Note 5 this year however a report from Korea suggests the company has decided to modify its annual naming scheme.

The Galaxy Note 7, now replacing the Galaxy Note 6 name, is set to launch sometime in August. The reason for this is because of the company's Galaxy S series which began a year before the introduction of the Note lineup.

As a result, the current generation Galaxy Note always had a number less than the current Galaxy S phone and this led some to believe the Note was outdated despite launching in the same year (example: Galaxy S6 and Note 5).

Now that the issue is resolved, we can now discuss specs. For the first time, the Galaxy Note 7 will sport curved edges on the front and back.

Motorola’s ‘MotoMods’ for the Moto Z leak in new image

Posted: 25 May 2016 08:14 PM PDT

Not long ago we got a good look at the backside of what's believed to be Motorola's and Verizon's new DROID handsets. Now, thanks to a newly leaked image, we're getting our first look at what's being called "MotoMods."

MotoMods are going to be modules that attach to the back of the new flagship smartphones released this year from Motorola. There are small connectors on the back plate of the new devices which these accessories connect to, and it looks like they will indeed take up the entirety of the back case when they are put in place.

Motorola's new smartphones are said to be called something like the Moto Z Play and Moto Z Style, and with a MotoMod attached to them, they'll get a boost in functionality. In the image leaked out by Evan Blass (@evleaks), we can see three different MotoMods. The one on the top looks to be a camera accessory, with a lens in the middle, a flash near the top-left corner, and a physical button to snap photos as well.

The case in the middle of the trio looks like it will have a kickstand in the middle, and it's likely to be a battery case as well, as it has a bit of thickness to it. However, there's some unknown elements with that final MotoMod on the bottom of the pile. It's pretty thin, and the difference in material in the middle stretch could indicate it's a case for wireless charging, but nothing is confirmed at this moment.

It will be interesting to see how these MotoMods compare to LG's "Friends" accessories for the modular LG G5, which launched earlier this year.

Are you getting pumped up for the Moto Z? We might only have to wait until June 9 to see it get unveiled.

New DROID device appears in leaked photo

Posted: 25 May 2016 07:14 PM PDT

The DROID brand was once the benchmark brand when it came to Android devices. In recent years, the brand has lost much of its former glory, now simply being Verizon-exclusive devices that feature the trademark logo. It appears that a new DROID device is on the way, and it looks to be coming from Motorola, which is expected to soon launch a new Moto Z device.

This new DROID device has quite a spiffy design, with a rear that looks to be a combination of glass and metal, although the reflections make it a bit hard to tell the exact material. The edges of the device appear to have a glossy metal finish. The back of the device features connectors for Motorola's MotoMod swappable modules as well as a large, round camera lens.

There's no word on when this device will be released, but hopefully we'll learn more over the next few weeks.

Samsung not giving up on Android Wear after all, though that’s not saying much

Posted: 25 May 2016 04:44 PM PDT

Samsung's first and last Android-powered smartwatch was the Gear Live, which launched alongside Android Wear itself. Ever since, Samsung's watches and wearables have been powered by its in-house Tizen operating system.

Fast Company concluded that Samsung was done with Android Wear, but that doesn't seem to be true. Samsung responded to the claim saying that no such decision has been made, though that doesn't mean Samsung will be using Android Wear anytime soon.

"We disagree with Fast Company's interpretation. Samsung has not made any announcement concerning Android Wear and we have not changed our commitment to any of our platforms."

Android Wear has quickly grown and become very popular, on top of being far more functional and useful with the many updates that have been released so far. Android Wear 2.0 looks even more promising. Maybe Samsung will revisit the software with hardware people will actually want to buy (the Gear S2 is quite good-looking).

HTC has ended the production of Nexus 9

Posted: 25 May 2016 04:14 PM PDT

Last month, the Nexus 9 manufactured by HTC was officially pulled from the Google Store. There were still options out there for the folks that might want to buy one, but as far as Google's online store went, stock was depleted for good.

Now, as reported by CNET, it looks like HTC has gone ahead and pulled the plug on manufacturing the Nexus 9. HTC did confirm that it still has some units available for sale on its official website if you're so inclined, though, including both the 16GB and 32GB Wi-Fi models. If you prefer LTE on your tablet, HTC has the 32GB LTE Nexus 9 for sale, too.

It's worth noting that HTC isn't ending production because it's been hit with gaps of demand, apparently, but instead because the device has just reached the end of its run.

Did you ever buy a Nexus 9?
