YouTube's Up Next Autoplay Feature Appears To Be Rolling Out To Android

Posted: 03 May 2016 02:43 PM PDT

YouTube does a lot of cool things, but the consensus is that auto-playing the next video is not one of them. I'm sure some people like that, and they're going to be quite pleased to hear that Google appears to be adding autoplay to the Android app. It's looking like a server-side change, so sit tight and prepare to be pleased or annoyed, depending on your outlook.

With this feature enabled, the YouTube app will move on to the next video in the queue automatically when the current one is finished.

Marshmallow continues to gain ground in Google’s May 2016 Android distribution report

Posted: 03 May 2016 02:13 PM PDT

Another month, another look at how Android's many platforms are doing out there in the real world. Google has issued another monthly update that shows yet another strong month for Marshmallow.

According to Google, 7.5% of Android devices that accessed the Play Store during the seven-day period ending on May 2 were running Android 6.0. Compare that to the numbers from April, when Marshmallow was on 4.6% of devices.

Going through the other versions, Android Lollipop (Android 5.0 and Android 5.1) registered on 16.2% and 19.4%, respectively, totaling 35.6% of devices accessing the Play Store. That would indicate that Lollipop has actually dropped 0.2 percent from last month's recordings.

Android KitKat is now at 32.5%, a decline from 33.4% last month. Android Jelly Bean is now registering on 20.1% of devices, while Android Ice Cream Sandwich is now on 2.0% of devices, according to Google's latest numbers. So there were sweeping declines for Android versions, other than Marshmallow, which is good news.

Which version of Android are you running on your daily driver?

2K's New Shooter Battleborn Comes To Android As A Disappointing 2D 'Clicker' Game

Posted: 03 May 2016 02:09 PM PDT

battlebornRight now mega-publisher 2K is in full promotion mode trying to get people to play Battleborn. It's a brand new shooter from (at least some of) the makers of the hugely popular Borderlands, and it attempts to blend conventional pew-pew gameplay with the variety and marketability of the MOBA genre. As part of this push the company has published Battleborn Tap, a mobile game that is neither a MOBA nor a shooter.

New_video_destination_Android.0

We're going off a single source here, so grains of salt and all that, but it looks like Facebook has finally begun to push the new Facebook Live tab to some Android users, a month after announcing it. The image below is from Romanian blog daytrend.ro, and clearly shows the same UI we saw in Facebook's initial announcement in April.

The blog states that they're using the current v77 alpha of the Facebook app, though using that same version I was unable to replicate the above.

WordPress 5.4 Beta For Android Finally Introduces A Proper Visual Editor

Posted: 03 May 2016 11:16 AM PDT

DSC02224

This post is a bit meta, as Android Police itself is a WordPress-powered site. But anyone who uses WordPress will appreciate the massive, much-needed feature introduced in the beta version of the Android app today: finally, a true visual editor.

You see, previous versions of the WordPress Android app have offered a semi-functional visual editor when publishing or editing content, but this editor was extremely basic. Certain formatting and content like bolding, italicizing, underlining, strikethrough, quote blocks, hyperlinks, and images could be previewed live in the editor - but only when publishing a new post.

Huawei Watch Elegant and Jewel launch in the US today with $50 discounts

Posted: 03 May 2016 10:12 AM PDT

Back in January of this year, Huawei officially announced a pair of new Huawei Watch variants, these new models specifically aimed at women who might be looking for a smartwatch.

The Huawei Watch Jewel is pictured on the left, while the Huawei Watch Elegant is the model on the right. Each of the smartwatches will be available to buy today from the Google Store as well as Best Buy, Amazon, B&H Photo Video, and Newegg. Right now each watch features a price discount of $50, which means if you order them before the deal expires, you'll only pay $549.99 for the Jewel and $449.99 for the Elegant. They usually retail for $599.99 and $499.99, respectively. The deal ends on Monday, May 9.

The Huawei Watch Jewel and Elegant are similar to the original Huawei Watch, insofar that they feature a 1.4-inch 400×400 round AMOLED display and are equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor. There's also 512MB of RAM and 4GB of built-in storage in both units. Their batteries measure in at 300mAh.

There are differences between the new Jewel and Elegant when compared to last year's standard Huawei Watch. Both units have a rose-gold plated body, while the Jewel really stands out thanks to the 68 Swarovski Zirconia crystals along the edge. Both watches also boast unique leather bands for good measure. They will also feature 10 unique watch faces that aren't available in the standard model.

What do you think of Huawei's new smartwatches?

Twitter Adds New Connect Tab To the App For Detailed Follow Suggestions

Posted: 03 May 2016 09:33 AM PDT

Twitter-ThumbLike all social networks, Twitter is only fun and useful if you follow people who say things you're interested in. How you find those people is the tricky part. Starting today, Twitter is rolling out a new Connect tab on iOS and Android that allegedly makes it easier to find the right people and accounts to follow.

Connect will use signals like what accounts you follow, tweets you like, current events, and where you are to list accounts you might want to follow.

HTC Desire 830 now official with BoomSound front speakers and more

Posted: 03 May 2016 08:43 AM PDT

HTC has just announced a brand new smartphone that offers a feature that even its latest flagship smartphone doesn't boast.

The company lifted the curtain off the Desire 830, showcasing its BoomSound front-facing speakers. The rest of the phone is admirable enough, with a 5.5-inch 1920×1080 display and 13-megapixel camera on the back, coupled with optical image stabilization for good measure. There's an UltraPixel camera on the front, while under the hood there's an octa-core MediaTek processor humming along.

The Desire 830 also features 3GB of RAM and 32GB of built-in storage along with a microSD card slot for expandable storage. The battery measures in at 2800mAh.

The Desire 830 goes on sale in Taiwan beginning May 6, and it'll retail for NT$9,990 ($310 USD). There's no word right now from HTC whether or not the Desire 830 will land in other markets, but considering the Desire lineup usually makes the rounds eventually, it seems plausible that the powerful mid-range device will find its way to other markets.

HTC also confirmed that it would begin selling the Desire 825 in Taiwan beginning today, May 3. The Desire 825 features a 5.5-inch 1280×720 display, a 13MP camera on the back, a Snapdragon 400 processor, and 2GB of RAM. It'll be priced at NT$7,990, or $248 USD.

What do you think of the Desire 830? Should HTC have included front-facing speakers on the HTC 10?

Another Brazilian Judge Has Shut Down WhatsApp In The Country For 72 Hours

Posted: 03 May 2016 05:02 AM PDT

brazil-whatsapp-ban

Oh Brazil, you magnificent country of beautiful landscapes, sexy women, excellent football players, and silly judges and judicial system. For the third time since 2015, a Brazilian state judge has ordered a complete shut down on WhatsApp by forcing operators to block the service nationwide for 72 hours, and thus killing the main means of communication of 91% of the country's mobile users.

The main question is why. Due to legal secrecy in the country, the details aren't released, but it appears that this isn't related to the first two bans in February of 2015 (issued by judge Luiz de Moura Correia from the state of Piauí) and December of 2015 (issued by a São Paulo judge).

Card Case Shares Contact Details With Those Around You Using The Nearby API

Posted: 03 May 2016 03:47 AM PDT

card-case-nearby

The Nearby API is arguably one of the coolest features Google introduced in Play Services last year, but its potential remains largely untapped. Pocket Casts and Trello were one of the first apps to use it for sharing, but very few apps have since followed suit and even less have been built solely to utilize this new capability. Last week, we heard of Radon, an app that shares links to nearby devices, and today we have another new app that does the same for contact cards: Card Case.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 6 To Come With USB-C

Posted: 02 May 2016 09:23 PM PDT

Galaxy Note

Almost every flagship phone released this year has a USB-C connector, except for the Galaxy S7. However it looks Samsung's next flagship phone will be the company's first USB-C phone.

Note 5 S Pen

According to a SamMobile exlusive, the Galaxy Note 6 will come with a USB-C connector. Unfortunately, it is still not known whether this will be USB 3.1 spec as that supports fast charging and HDMI video out.

Also, because the Note 6 is coming with a USB-C connector, Samsung will have to release an updated Gear VR in order to support it. Now if it will be the 2nd generation Gear VR, that's up to you to decide.
