Sirin Labs releases Android phone with ‘military-grade’ security starting at only $14,000

Posted: 31 May 2016 02:38 PM PDT

If you're a highly-paid businessman who needs a phone as secure as it is ridiculously fancy, this might be the phone for you. Sirin Labs has launched an Android-powered smartphone called the Solarin, and it starts at a measly $13,800.

The Solarin features a 5.5-inch 2K IPS display, a Snapdragon 810 processor, a 23.8MP camera with laser autofocus and four-tone flash, a three-speaker setup, X10 LTE with 24 supported bands, 2×2 MU-MIMO WiFi, and a construction of carbon fiber, leather, and titanium.

On the software side, there's Android with 256-bit AES encryption, Zimperium mobile threat protection, and a physical security switch on the back to make sure private business data stays private.

Is this device going to replace the BlackBerry as a businessman's best friend? Heck no! That starting price of $13,800 guarantees that it will be out of reach of most business people. You can even get a gold one for $17,400 if you'd really like.

This device is crazy in so many ways, and all the info the company gives is filled with buzz words. It's actually pretty awesome. Check out the press release below, and let us know what you think! Will the Solarin be replacing that outdated Vertu in your coat pocket?

Could This Be A Reference To A Galaxy Note 7 Edge Variant?

Posted: 31 May 2016 12:32 PM PDT

S6 Edge+ and Note 5

For those that don't know, Samsung is rumoured to jump straight to the Galaxy Note 7 naming scheme as a way to be consistent with its other flagship lineup like the Galaxy S7. However a new leak suggests the company just might release two versions of the Note this year.

According to the Indian import/export site Zauba, a listing featuring a Samsung model number (SM-N935G) appeared on May 26th. The reason why it was listed is not clear as a "metal mask for a mobile phone production line" could really mean anything. The real importance here is the model number itself as GSMArena suggests it could refer to a potential Edge variant of the Galaxy Note 7.

The reasoning for that is the Galaxy S7 has the model number SM-G930 and the S7 Edge is SM-G935. The model number for the Galaxy Note always starts with an N which is evident by the model number of last year's Note 5: SM-N920. So by taking this into consideration, the model number SM-N935G could very well be the Note 7 Edge.

We'll have to see if this theory holds since rumours start to get more and more concrete as the days go by.

Sony Xperia E5 now official with a 5-inch display, 13MP camera, and more

Posted: 31 May 2016 10:39 AM PDT

Sony's already confirmed that its Xperia X series of devices are headed to the United States, and now the company has another device to announce.

Sony has officially introduced the Xperia E5, a mid-range smartphone with a 5-inch 1280×720 display. There's a 13-megapixel camera on the back, which Sony says features software that will automatically adjust based on whatever it is you're taking a picture of thanks to Auto Scene Recognition. On the front, there's a 5-megapixel shooter.

The Xperia E5 also features a MediaTek MTK6735 quad-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, an FM radio, support for NFC, 16GB of built-in storage, and a microSD card slot that supports cards up to 200GB. It features Android 6.0 out of the box, too, and the battery measures in at 2700mAh. Sony says the Xperia E5 will last two days on a single charge.

Unfortunately, Sony doesn't have any information on the cost of the Xperia E5 or when it will become available.

T-Mobile’s Tourist Plan launches on June 12 for those visiting the US

Posted: 31 May 2016 09:49 AM PDT

The majority of announcements that T-Mobile has revolve around wireless subscribers in the United States, but the magenta carrier's latest announcement is tuned more towards the folks who will be visiting the country from other regions of the globe.

It's called the Tourist Plan, and it launches on June 12. The carrier says it'll be a super-easy way for visitors of the United States to use their phone without having to worry about a ton of overages or other charges. The Tourist Plan will cost $30 per month and will work for three weeks once activated. It will give the customer 1000 minutes of domestic calling, unlimited texting to U.S.-based numbers and to 140 other countries and destinations, and unlimited data with access to 2GB of high-speed data. The plan also supports a Wi-Fi hotspot.

T-Mobile says international travelers just need to visit an official T-Mobile store or one of the many T-Mobile prepaid dealers. Customers won't need to pay for a SIM card, and they won't need to pay an activation fee, either. However, it's worth noting that the plan doesn't include Binge On or Music Freedom.

Specifically, the Xperia X will be available to order from B&H Photo Video, Best Buy, Amazon, and Reagan Wireless for $549.99. There will be a 128GB microSD card thrown in for good measure as well, which will bolster the 32GB of built-in storage. The Xperia X will officially go on sale on June 26.

LG introduces the G Pad III 8.0, another lackluster tablet

Posted: 31 May 2016 08:45 AM PDT

LG has never made much of an impression on the tablet market. While the company may take risks with its smartphones, it plays it very safe with its tablets, and LG has just announced another tablet that carries this same trend onward. LG's G Pad III 8.0 is a standard, normal and ultimately uninteresting 8-inch tablet. Let's take a look at what LG is banking on with this device.

  • 8-inch 1920×1200 IPS display
  • 1.5GHz octa-core processor
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 32GB of storage plus microSD card slot
  • 5-megapixel rear camera
  • 8-megapixel front-facing camera
  • 4800mAh battery
  • Bluetooth 4.1
  • Android 6.0 Marshmallow

All in all, the G Pad III 8.0 is uninspiring. An LTE version is also available, currently being offered on Canadian carriers Rogers and Fido. While this version has LTE, it drops the storage to 16GB and the front-facing camera is lowered to 5 megapixels. That being said, the LTE version also has Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and Bluetooth 4.2.

LG G Pad III 8.0 (2)

While the tablet may not grab your interest with specs, it is fairly inexpensive. Korean pricing for the Wi-Fi model is ₩330,000, or about $278 USD. Both Canadian carriers are offering the LTE model for CAD 240 when it's paired with a monthly plan. That price point may just be enough to cause consumers to take a second look at the G Pad III 8.0.

[Not In The US] Songsterr Guitar Tabs & Chords Is Down To GBP 0.10 In The UK, Europe, And Other Countries

Posted: 31 May 2016 06:01 AM PDT

When I was a kid, my parents desperately wanted me to learn how to play the piano and electronic keyboard. I took classes for 7 years and got really good at it, until I realized that I loved listening to music but not playing it. I just didn't have the ear for it and I couldn't tell a re from a fa if my life depended on it. I do envy those who can play instruments though, mostly the guitar.

Sunshine, The Popular iOS Weather App, Is Currently In Beta Testing For Android

Sunshine, a popular and unique weather app for iOS, is making its way to Android. The app specializes in providing useful, rather than detailed, information while crowdsourcing for more accurate weather data. While there hasn't been an official announcement from the developers, the app is now open for beta testing.

The creators of the app were inspired by their daily frustration of inaccurate forecasts at the local beach. Of course, beach weather is going to be more difficult to predict than your average place and will be quite likely to be experiencing different conditions than a sensor that is, say, 15 miles inland.
