Sky Force Reloaded Brings More Top-Down Shoot 'Em Up Fun To Android

Posted: 01 Jun 2016 02:33 PM PDT

sf

The original Sky Force came out in 2014, and it was hugely popular with more than 5 million downloads. It was free, but had reasonably gentle IAPs. Now, the sequel has arrived. It too is a free-to-play game, and the way in-app purchases are structured is, again, not terrible.

If you've played a top-down shooter in the past you'll know what to expect here—drag your plane around the screen and shoot everything.

Google Fiber TV box getting updated with limited Google Cast feature

Posted: 01 Jun 2016 02:21 PM PDT

The lucky few that have Google Fiber have it good enough as it is, and almost every tech nerd is green with envy. But Fiber is about to get significantly better with a simple update to the Fiber TV box.

This update adds Google Cast functionality to the box, turning it into a Chromecast. No longer will you have to switch inputs to a dedicated Chromecast or Google TV, because now you can stream content from your phone directly to your TV box. It's not a huge addition, but it's a really nice feature.

Unfortunately, it comes with a caveat. Hulu, WatchESPN, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD, WATCH ABC, Spotify, and HBO NOW are all not supported, though HBO GO is. This is likely to do with the owners of these apps trying to restrict streaming on a cable box, which is unfortunate, but that's how it is.

So yes, just because it's a cable box, you lose some functionality over a standard Chromecast. You may not want to throw that little dongle away just yet. The feature rolls out within the next few weeks, so Google Fiber users should start seeing it soon. Fiber users, are you upset by these restrictions, or do they not affect you? Leave a comment!

HTC giving free USB-C cable to customers buying HTC 10

Posted: 01 Jun 2016 01:33 PM PDT

Those who purchased an HTC 10 from HTC rather than a carrier are getting a token of appreciation from the company. HTC has been sending out a gift to its customers in the form of a free USB-C cable.

Not only is this a nice gesture, but it's also a valuable one, because Good USB-C cables aren't as easy to track down as we had hoped.

We don't know if the company is still giving these gifts out to those who buy the HTC 10 now, but a bunch of people have gotten them so far. Good on you, HTC.

Google Play wants to help you figure out which apps to delete to free up space

Posted: 01 Jun 2016 01:33 PM PDT

No one likes having to dig through their apps to figure which ones to delete after getting a dreaded "Not enough space" message, but for app junkies the struggle is real. Thankfully, help is on the way from the Google Play Store's Uninstall Manager.

Rolling out to certain Android users now, the Google Play Store has a new feature called the Uninstall Manager which will pop up when you don't have enough space to download a new app and suggest unused, large apps to delete. The Uninstall Manager doesn't do anything else special, like ask if you want to move apps or data to the cloud, but it's a nice addition for now.

Let us know if you see the Uninstall Manager pop up on your phone.

Vivendi Succeeds In Hostile Takeover Of Mobile Game Publisher Gameloft

Posted: 01 Jun 2016 01:28 PM PDT

nexus2cee_gameloft_thumbEarlier this year we reported that Vivendi, a media mega-corporation headquartered in Paris, was attempting to take control of prolific mobile developer and publisher Gameloft. It appears that they've succeeded: today the company announced that it has purchased a 61.71% share of Gameloft's public stock, giving it more than half of the voting rights for the corporation. The company offered 8 euro per share to existing shareholders in February in a conventional hostile takeover attempt.

Google is going to more closely control Nexus design and features

Posted: 01 Jun 2016 12:30 PM PDT

Nexus phone are about to get a lot more Googly. During an interview at the Code Conference today, Google CEO Sundar Pichai shared a bit on where the Nexus program was headed in the future, saying Google will start exhibiting more control over design and features of the handsets.

According to Pichai, Google will "be more opinionated about the design of the phones," and in order to keep pushing the platform and innovating, Google will "hopefully add more features on top of Android on Nexus phones." In other words, while Nexus phones have transitioned over time from pure Android to Google's vision of Android, that difference is going to be even more apparent in the future.

The manufacturing process for Nexus devices won't change, as Google will still be working with OEM partners instead of going first-party. Even if there was a change there on the horizon, we wouldn't expect to see it until at least 2017. HTC is rumored to be manufacturing this year's Nexus devices, hopefully with a little more Google influence.

Verizon posts list of Father’s Day deals, including free TV

Posted: 01 Jun 2016 11:25 AM PDT

Father's Day is coming up in just a couple of weeks and it's about that time when carriers begin posting their deals for the holiday. Verizon has now revealed its offerings, and this list of deals looks pretty tempting. While there are deals for everyone, customers looking for a new Samsung smartphone are in for a real treat. Let's check out the offerings.

  • Free 50-inch Samsung Smart TV when customers purchase two qualifying Samsung devices on Device Payment plans and activate a new line.
  • Free Samsung Gear VR when customers purchase a qualifying Samsung device.
  • Free 32-inch Samsung Smart TV when customers purchase a qualifying Samsung device on a Device Payment plan and activate a new line.
  • $100 bill credit when you purchase a new smartphone with a Device Payment plan.
  • Switch to Verizon and receive up to $650 to pay off your old phone and contract when you trade in your old device and purchase a new device.
  • Receive $20 off the Bose Soundlink Mini Bluetooth Speaker II and Fitbit Blaze.

There are a couple of caveats. Qualifying Samsung devices include the Samsung Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge, and the Note 5. Additionally, the free TV offers cannot be combined with the Gear VR offer, so you'll have to decide which is of more interest to you. Other than that, it seems pretty straightforward, though you should talk to your local Verizon representative if you have any questions.

Are you planning to take advantage of any of these deals?

OnePlus 3

After several leaks over the past few weeks, we now know almost everything about OnePlus' upcoming flagship, the OnePlus 3. Now the company's co-founder took to the forums to share even more news regarding the phone.

Carl Pei, co-founder of OnePlus has just announced the official launch date for the OnePlus 3 to be June 14th. And just like last year, it will be streamed in Virtual Reality (now that the company is selling their own VR headset, the OnePlus Loop VR). The next piece of information, which by far is the most important, is the removal of the company's controversial invite system.

We're releasing the OnePlus 3 invite-free, right from launch day. In addition, invites are gone forever from future OnePlus product launches. …With the OnePlus 3, we're officially saying goodbye to invites. It's a big step for us as a company, our fans, and fellow tech enthusiasts.

Obviously specs for the phone were missing but we have them here anyway: 5.5-inch 1080p display, the Snapdragon 820 SoC with up to 6GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage with SD card expansion, 16MP rear/5MP front camera. The battery capacity will only be 3,000 mAh and will run Android 6.0.1.

Timings for the event are also posted and they are as follows:

  • 12.30 PM EDT (New York)
  • 9.30 AM PDT (San Francisco)
  • 4.30 PM UTC/GMT
  • 5.30 PM BST (London)
  • 6.30 PM CEST (Paris)
  • 10.00 PM IST(Bengaluru)

So there you have it, the OnePlus 3 will be official starting June 14th. To read the full forum post, check out the source link below.

Google is celebrating My Account’s birthday with new features

Posted: 01 Jun 2016 10:38 AM PDT

With security threats on the rise, Google has continued to place a larger emphasis on privacy and security controls for users of its products. One of the steps it took last year was to introduce My Account, a hub for security and privacy controls related to a user's Google account. Today, My Account is celebrating its first birthday and Google is adding some new features as part of the festivities.

The most notable new feature is the "Find Your Phone" feature of My Account. Previously, users could do this through the Android Device Manager, but integrating it into My Account makes it less complex and streamlines security. Users can locate their phone, lock it, call it, secure their Google account, leave a callback number on the screen and more. Soon, users will even be able to search "I lost my phone" in Google and the options will arise. This feature is available to both Android and iOS users.

Another change is that My Account is now even easier to access. In the latest version of the Google app, users can simply say "Ok Google, show me my Google account," to view their My Account page. Additionally, users will soon be able to search their own name in Google and quickly find a link to My Account.

This is a great little update for My Account that makes it even more useful, continuing to simplify security for users.

Are you excited for the changes in this update?

Google Now on Tap has an incredibly useful new feature

Posted: 01 Jun 2016 09:35 AM PDT

We all know and love Google Now on Tap, but in its current form, it's still in need of some improvement and refinement. Fortunately, a new feature is in the works that makes Now on Tap far more useful. Some users are now seeing a tap-to-select text feature as part of Now on Tap that allows you to select individual text to refine your search to just that selection.

To use the feature, a user simply activates Now on Tap. This will bring up results for a number of different results that Google automatically finds on the page. But if a users wants to select specific text, they can tap on the new tap-to-select text button that sits alongside the share and menu buttons. Now on Tap will then make any text on the page selectable and the user can select a specific piece of text that Google will then bring up results for.

The best part is that this new feature works anywhere, not just on web pages. Users can use it in social media, music apps or practically anywhere. The most incredible feature, however, is that Now on Tap can even derive text from within images, allowing you to select text within in an image. Droid Life shows this feature in action with the below screenshots from Instagram.

Now on Tap Tap to Select Text

This new feature of Now on Tap is one that brings in enormous new functionality, improving the entire experience and making it far more useful. Google is clearly putting an effort into Now on Tap, and if this is a sign of things to come, users should be very excited.

Verizon pushing Marshmallow to the Samsung Galaxy S5

Posted: 01 Jun 2016 08:28 AM PDT

We've endured the wait for a major software update, hoping and praying that today is the day that it finally arrives. Samsung Galaxy S5 owners on Verizon can now rejoice, as the carrier has begun pushing the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update out to users. Wondering what you'll find in this update? Here are some of the highlights.

  • Now On Tap: the contextual version of Google Now
  • Doze: a battery-saving feature for when your phone isn't in use
  • Individual app permission controls: grant specific permissions and refuse others
  • Wi-Fi Calling
  • Updated TouchWiz UI
  • Ultra High Quality Audio
  • Android for Work support

While there's no major design overhaul, this update brings in a number of small, but useful features. Galaxy S5 users should enjoy Wi-Fi Calling in particular, as it's a feature that Verizon has been rolling out to smartphones for some time now. The update is now rolling out to users as an OTA update, but it may be a few days before you see it on your device. Be patient, it'll arrive soon.

Any Galaxy S5 users on Verizon seeing the update yet?

OnePlus 3 will launch on June 14, no invite necessary

Posted: 01 Jun 2016 07:25 AM PDT

Mark your calendars, Android fans, because we now know exactly when the next major flagship phone will launch.

The OnePlus 3 will officially go on sale on June 14. Specifically, it'll be available starting at 12:30 pm ET. The catch is that for its first couple of hours of availability, you'll only be able to buy the OnePlus 3 through The Loop, OnePlus's virtual reality store. The OnePlus 3 will hit OnePlus's website at 3:00 pm ET on June 14.

Here's what the OnePlus 3 launch timing will be for all time zones on June 14:

  • 12:30 PM EDT (New York)
  • 9:30 AM PDT (San Francisco)
  • 4:30 PM UTC/GMT
  • 5:30 PM BST (London)
  • 6:30 PM CEST (Paris)
  • 10:00 PM IST (Bengaluru)

One other notable detail about the OnePlus 3 launch is that the new flagship will be available without an invite immediately. OnePlus says that it's ditching invites for all future product releases, as it's now confident that it no longer needs to rely on invites to help scale its operations.

OnePlus's invite system has been the target of a lot of criticism in the past, as consumers have been frustrated that they couldn't simply navigate to OnePlus's shop and buy the company's hot new device. Now that OnePlus has gone through a few major phone releases, though, the company has decided that it's able to conduct a full-on launch. Sure, the OnePlus 3 will only be available in the first few hours following its launch, but that's better than waiting through days, weeks, or months of an invite system.

Xiaomi will pre-load Microsoft’s Office apps and Skype on Mi devices

Posted: 01 Jun 2016 07:25 AM PDT

Microsoft and Xiaomi are forging ahead with a new partnership that will see a mutual benefit for both companies.

For Xiaomi, the company is coming into quite a few patents. Microsoft will be selling 1,500 of its patents to Xiaomi as part of a "long-term relationship" between the companies. That also includes a patent cross-licensing deal. And for Microsoft, it means that its Office quite of mobile apps, along with Skype, will be pre-loaded on Mi devices moving forward.

Beginning in September of this year, the Mi 5, Mi Max, Mi 4s, Redmi Note 3, and the Redmi 3 will come pre-loaded with Microsoft's Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Skype.

A bold move for both companies, with Xiaomi getting plenty of access to patents to enhance its devices moving forward, and Microsoft getting its software on millions of devices.

Samsung has an event planned for June 2

As summer gets started, it's always a busy time for tech companies. Google's already had its time with Google I/O, and Apple has plans to show new things off later this month at WWDC 2016. Now, Samsung wants to be right in the middle.

The company has officially begun sending out invites for an event that will take place on Thursday, June 2. It will begin at 5:00 PM ET and takes place in New York City. The invite isn't showing anything off, but does say that attendees will "Go Move Explore Create with Galaxy," and that the event will let people "Experience how Samsung's devices work together to create a Galaxy of Possibility."

As for what Samsung plans on unveiling, it could be the Gear IconX wireless earbuds and the Gear Fit 2, as those would certainly go in line with moving and exploring.

To that end, Google is introducing an uninstall manager to the Play Store, nine months after Cody discovered its existence in an APK teardown.

LG Stylus 2 Plus offers ‘significantly better performance’ over the Stylus 2

Posted: 31 May 2016 09:34 PM PDT

After debuting the LG Stylus 2 ahead of MWC in February, LG has now followed itself up with the LG Stylus 2 Plus, an upgraded version of the stylus-equipped phablet.

LG says that the Stylus 2 Plus offers "significantly better performance" than the original Stylus 2, which is likely thanks to the upgrade to a 1.4GHz octa-core processor from a 1.2GHz quad-core chip. The LG Stylus 2 Plus also offers more RAM and storage than the Stylus 2, coming in 2GB/16GB and 3GB/32GB models.

The differences between the two phones don't stop there. The LG Stylus 2 Plus has a higher-res 5.7-inch 1920×1080 display, while the LG Stylus 2 has a 5.7-inch 1280×720 screen. Additionally, the Stylus 2 Plus comes equipped with 13-megapixel rear/5-megapixel front or 16-megapixel rear/8-megapixel front camera configurations, depending on your region.

Rounding out the LG Stylus 2 Plus's spec list is a rear fingerprint reader, 3000mAh battery, and Android 6.0 Marshmallow. LG has added its own touch to Android, building in features like Quick Memo and Pen Keeper, the latter of which will alert you when the Stylus 2 Plus and its pen stray too far apart.

The LG Stylus 2 Plus is a pretty significant upgrade over the original Stylus 2, which was a entry-level device. With these improvements, the Stylus 2 Plus is a more compelling option for folks in the market for a phablet that offers solid performance and a built-in stylus for note-taking.

LG says that the Stylus 2 Plus will launch in Taiwan today with rollouts in North America, South America, Asia, and Europe in the weeks that follow. No pricing details have been given.

Casually browsing YouTube on a mobile device is a pretty good experience, or at least it's about as good as anything we've seen on a phone or tablet so far. However, many of us aren't going to YouTube just to poke around at the latest trending videos and subscriptions, we're actually looking for something specific, and that's when the search UI comes in. Mobile search is pretty comparable to the web experience too–in fact, they are almost in feature parity–but there are still a few things missing from mobile.

Google building Assistant ‘character’ with backstory and childhood

Posted: 31 May 2016 05:33 PM PDT

Our current crop of assistants like Google Now, Apple's Siri, and Microsoft's Cortana try to act like humans. They have personalities, they tell jokes, and they generally try not to act like robots. Google Now is likely the worst at this though, as Siri and Cortana's characters are quite obvious.

Google wants to achieve something far better with Google Assistant, which will power Google Home. The company is aiming to make an AI that you want to talk to and that you get along with and enjoy corresponding with. Google got Ryan Germick, head of the Google Doodle team, and freelance artist Emma Coats to make a character for the assistant.

This character will be a backstory, and may even include a childhood. They aim to make the AI smart and able to carry conversations and tell stories, rather than just answer basic questions. Another goal is to make the assistant relatable.

The two have lot of work ahead of them. Despite Siri being smart and sassy, she's still very much a basic robot with a few tricks up her sleeves. We hope to see Google Assistant rise above that.
