Facebook Messenger once again gets SMS support

Posted: 14 Jun 2016 01:43 PM PDT

Remember back when Facebook Messenger was young and it offered an SMS feature? You could have Facebook messaging and texting in one app, floating above your screen using chat heads. Unfortunately, the SMS feature was removed from the app due to low adoption rates.

Thankfully, Facebook is reintroducing the feature, but it's better this time around. On top of regular SMS, you'll be able to send stickers, voice clips, and locations through the app. And just like before, you can use SMS with chat heads.

The update to the app is rolling out in most countries today, so keep an eye out for the update and let us know how the new feature is working out for you!

Facebook officially adds SMS support to Messenger

Posted: 14 Jun 2016 01:37 PM PDT

Nearly three years after Hangouts combined instant messaging and SMS, Facebook Messenger is doing the same. It's Facebook official.

Like Hangouts was at launch, Messenger does not merge existing conversations and SMS into the same thread, an option that took half a year to arrive in Hangouts. Facebook's shows SMS conversations in purple, while Messenger chats remain blue. SMS integration is exclusively an Android feature, but you can send texts to people on any platform.

SMS Support Coming To Facebook Messenger On Android

Posted: 14 Jun 2016 12:37 PM PDT

If there's one good thing about SMS and Android, you can choose any SMS app of your choice and your messages will appear in those apps automatically. Now it looks like Facebook wants a piece of the 3rd party SMS app cake.

David Marcus, leader of Facebook Messenger announced today that the app will now officially support SMS in most countries. You will now be able open Messenger, select "SMS" and turn on "Default SMS App" in the settings. Once that process is complete, your SMS conversations will then appear in purple, next to your blue Facebook messages.

On a side note, it's worth mentioning that Facebook states they do not process or store your SMS conversations through its servers, and that it is all done on the phone.

Space Hulk for Android offers turn-based strategy in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, but only on SHIELD devices

Posted: 14 Jun 2016 12:08 PM PDT

image (1)Space Hulk is not some Jason X-style reinterpretation of Marvel's not-so-jolly green giant, fun as that might be. Nope, it's a tabletop tactical RPG set in the vaunted Warhammer 40,000 setting. The setting, which features a bunch of strapping space marines stomping around a gigantic derelict spaceship. It's kind of like Aliens, except you get to kill things instead of run away. The latest video game version of the Space Hulk setup was released in 2013, and today it's been made available on the SHIELD, SHIELD Tablet, and SHIELD Portable.

oneplus3_main

The company held their launch event in VR today and announced that the phone will be priced at $519 CAD ($399 USD), and will be available for purchase later today at OnePlus.net. The best thing about it? There's no invite system to worry about! The phone will be ready to purchase when you click to buy.

Now on to the phone itself. It does indeed resemble the likes of the Galaxy S7, HTC 10 and yes, even Apple's newer generation of iPhones. The OnePlus 3 features an aluminium unibody design with silver and gold colour options with a thickness of only 7.35mm.

As for the specs, there's no surprise here as they were leaked so many times just this past month alone. It will sport a Snapdragon 820 SoC, 5.5-inch 1080p "Optic AMOLED display", 6GB of RAM, and 64GB of non-expandable internal storage. It also features a fingerprint scanner which doubles as a home button.

As for the camera, it comes with a 16MP rear camera with both OIS and EIS technologies and an 8MP front facing camera.

While the OnePlus 3's battery is a mere 3000 mAh, the company has included a Dash charging (quick charging) technology which gives the phone over a 60% charge in only 30 minutes. The company claims this should last the average user for about a day. The phone runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with their custom Oxygen OS ROM.

T-Mobile announces a gaming-centric Binge On expansion

Posted: 14 Jun 2016 08:52 AM PDT

T-Mobile is notable for finding ways to differentiate itself from the other carriers. One of the ways in which it does that is through its myriad of programs, including Binge On, T-Mobile's free service that allows customers to stream video through select providers without impacting the customer's data allotment. The company frequently expands its content provider list and today brings in another expansion that tends towards gaming. Check out the list of new providers:

  • Azubu
  • Dailymotion Games
  • Eyegroove
  • PBS
  • PBS Kids
  • YouTube Gaming

With half of this expansion focused on game streaming services, it's clear that this is an area that T-Mobile is shoring up with Binge On. While the service is close to reaching 90 different providers, it still remains controversial to some due to its downgrading streaming quality in order to lessen its impact on network performance. Nonetheless, customers are certainly using the service, as over 500 million hours of video have been streamed through Binge On. We'll keep you in the loop with further Binge On expansions.

Posted: 14 Jun 2016 06:11 AM PDT

google-maps-crowdsourced-verification

A couple of months ago, while tearing down an updated APK, Cody found hints that Google Maps would be crowdsourcing to curate suggested edits to Places. The feature didn't appear to go live then, but it seems that it's been showing up for some users over the past couple of weeks.

If you're checking a place in Google Maps, you might start seeing notes in yellow below certain information telling you that someone has submitted an edit for said info.

Google Has A New UI For Suggesting Place Attributes In Maps

Posted: 13 Jun 2016 05:50 PM PDT

maps

Google appears to be rolling out a new UI for suggesting attributes of businesses and places in Google Maps on Android. The new UI would appear to possibly be a replacement for the card-flow suggestions UI that has been rolling out for a number of a months now, and is substantially more compact.

The new attribute suggestions UI is surfaced right in the summary section of the place card of a business, with bolded text guiding Maps users to provide information.

Samsung Unpacked invitation leaked, seems to point at Galaxy Note 7 name

Posted: 13 Jun 2016 05:34 PM PDT

There are plenty of rumors flying around the next Samsung Galaxy Note. We don't even know if it will be called the Note 6 or the Note 7, the latter name being a rumor that Samsung will bring the Note devices in line with the current Galaxy S7.

This new leaked Samsung Unpacked event invitation gives us some hints on what to expect from the new Note device. First of all is the big shape in the middle, which looks like a 7. The rumors about the Note series skipping the Note 6 may be true.

The other hint is the phrase "The next edge is just around the corner." This is probably hinting at an edge device, whether it'll be a variant of the new Note or the sole model.

We're definitely excited to see this device launch. Rumored specs are a 5.8-inch QHD display, a Snapdragon 823 processor (at least for the US market), a 4,000 mAh battery, a USB Type C port, IP68 water resistance, and an iris scanner. Are you excited? Would you be okay with the edge model being the only Note 7 offered? Let us know in the comments!

The Xbox Smartglass app has been available on Android for a while, letting users control the Xbox's media functions, such as play, pause, and menu navigation, directly through the app. Today, at Microsoft's E3 press conference, the app is getting a big update, being renamed to just 'Xbox' and with features comparable to the equivalent on Windows 10. With the app, you can use Xbox Live, buy games, or watch game content shared by other users, making it the ultimate companion to the Microsoft-made box sitting near your TV.
