Google posts June’s Android Security Bulletin

Posted: 06 Jun 2016 01:42 PM PDT

Google has posted its monthly Android Security Bulletin for June, showcasing all of the vulnerabilities found in Android. This month a critical vulnerability was found that could execute code through email, text or more by processing media files. Google doesn't think the exploit has been used, but it's been patched anyway.

If you're using a Nexus device, definitely update your device as soon as you get the notification to do so. If you like to do it manually, you can get the factory images and OTA images directly from Google to update immediately.

For those without a Nexus device, it'll be a while before the manufacturer of your device will put out the June security update. If you have a flagship, it might be pretty soon. If you have an older device, it may be months, or never. This is the unfortunate truth for older Android devices.

T-Mobile Un-carrier 11 offers free stuff every week, stock for subscribers, and more

Posted: 06 Jun 2016 12:49 PM PDT

It's June 6 and T-Mobile has officially announced its Un-carrier 11 details, offering "Stock Up" as well as a ton of free stuff for subscribers.

T-Mobile CEO John Legere took time out of his busy schedule to take the wraps off of Un-carrier 11, which is focused on the subscribers. The first part of that movement is called "Stock Up," which will let subscribers earn stock in the wireless carrier simply by being a customer and referring new customers to join up. The carrier is offering a free share in the stock for every primary account holder, and will offer an additional share in the stock for every new customer that a subscriber is able to refer to sign up.

With the referral program, subscribers can earn up to 100 shares of stock every year. But to get those shares for a referral, the new customer will have to stay signed up for 15 days. For the subscribers that have been signed up for five or more years, you'll get two shares per referral, instead of one.

On top of that, T-Mobile Tuesdays is now official. It's an app that will give access to free stuff every single week. This week starts with a free video rental from VUDU, a free Frosty from Wendy's, a free medium two-topping Domino's pizza, as well as a free movie ticket to see Warcraft when it opens up this Friday, June 10. T-Mobile Tuesdays is available for both postpaid and prepaid subscribers.

T-Mobile is also offering a full free hour of Gogo Wi-Fi on a domestic flight and in-flight messaging through services like WhatsApp, Google Hangouts, Viber, and more.

What do you think of T-Mobile's Un-carrier 11 announcements?

OnePlus hosting OnePlus 3 pop-up events all across the globe beginning June 15

Posted: 06 Jun 2016 11:39 AM PDT

One June 14, OnePlus has plans to unveil and launch the OnePlus 3, the company's latest flagship handset. They'll do so without an invite system, and even let super excited fans be part of a blind pre-sale, letting customers buy the device before they even announce it.

One day after OnePlus announces the OnePlus 3, the company is also going to begin hosting "pop-up events" in seven cities around the globe. The events are meant to let those in the areas try out the OnePlus 3 before they buy it. So, essentially the complete opposite of the blind pre-sales.

OnePlus has announced the seven cities where the pop-up events will take place: New York, Berlin, Paris, London, New Delhi, Bangalore, and Mumbai. The company has also said that the folks who show up at the events early will get a bunch of "special goodies."

You can check out the times for each event right here.

Do you plan on going to one of these pop-up events?

EA Releases Mirror's Edge Catalyst Companion App

Posted: 06 Jun 2016 10:03 AM PDT

The original Mirror's Edge came out nearly a decade ago, and immediately garnered attention with its unique first-person running gameplay.  This success was not followed immediately by a sequel, which seems strange for EA (since when does EA leave money on the table?). Instead, it's taken this long to get another Mirror's Edge game, and there's a companion app live in the Play Store in preparation for tomorrow's release.

Mirror's Edge Catalyst will allow more open exploration with the trademark first-person parkour leaping and running.

The BlackBerry Priv is not doing very well at AT&T

Posted: 06 Jun 2016 09:33 AM PDT

Late last year, BlackBerry launched the Priv — the company's first Android-based smartphone — on AT&T. Since then, the Android hasn't been doing all that well on the big blue network.

Speaking to CNET, an AT&T executive has said that the Priv is "really struggling." Moreover, the executive also said that they've "seen seen more returns than we'd like" for BlackBerry's Android device. The executive went on to say that most of the people who have purchased a Priv have been "hardcore" BlackBerry fans, but have ultimately not been able to make the transition from BlackBerry OS or BlackBerry 10 to Android.

That's certainly unfortunate to hear for Blackberry, which took a big leap to adopt Android from its own proprietary mobile operating system. Still, one can hope that BlackBerry won't be giving up and that they'll launch something even better later this year.

Did you buy a Priv? If so, did you keep it or return it?

WhatsApp users (you and me both), it's time to raise your pitchforks and descend into battle. We've asked time and time again for the messaging service to add GIF support, you've whined in the comments section, we've whined in our private conversations with friends that we're sick of sending them links to GIFs and we just wanted, pretty please, to insert a freaking GIF like God Intended Forrealz inside a conversation and have it display just as any other image or video.

The new Samsung Galaxy S7 Active will be exclusive to AT&T

Posted: 06 Jun 2016 07:46 AM PDT

For the fourth year running, AT&T will be the exclusive carrier to offer a ruggedized version of Samsung's latest Galaxy S flagship. This morning, the company announced the Galaxy S7 Active, a tougher version of the popular flagship that features a larger battery, shatter resistance and water resistance.

While the Galaxy S7 Active packs in all of the features of the regular Galaxy S7, it also adds in some improvements to make it a bit less fragile. The S7 Active features shatter resistance for drops of five feet or less onto a flat surface. It also packs in IP68 water resistance for depths of up to five feet for 30 minutes or less.

Additionally, the S7 Active packs a 4000mAh battery, giving it a significant boost in battery life. With fast charging, the battery can also fully charge in less than two hours. Other specs include a 5.1-inch QHD Super AMOLED display, quad-core Snapdragon 820 processor, 32GB of storage plus microSD card slot and a 12-megapixel rear camera.

AT&T will begin selling the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active on June 10. Pricing looks to be about $795 full retail price, with AT&T offering the device through AT&T Next for 30 monthly payments of $26.50. Customers can also use AT&T Next every year to pay $33.13/month for 24 months to get a new device after one year.

AT&T customers, are you interested in the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active?

Flamingo Is A Beta Material Design Twitter Client From The Maker Of Weather Timeline

Posted: 05 Jun 2016 04:09 PM PDT

image (4)There's no shortage of Twitter clients for Android, even if Twitter itself keeps trying to kill them and then back out of it. The latest comes from Sam Ruston, the developer of Weather Timeline, which has been praised both by Android Police and the higher powers at Google itself. Flamingo is a standard Twitter client that almost slavishly follows the Material Design guidelines. It's available in the Play Store for a dollar with no in-app purchases.
