Clock app update delivers support for multi-window and Direct Boot in Android N [APK Download]

Posted: 13 Jul 2016 02:26 PM PDT

Clock

The Clock app may not be the most exciting one to come pre-installed on your phone, but it's one of the most important. Alarms get you to work or school on time, and if one fails to go off, that can lead to trouble. It's one thing to sleep through a class because you forgot. It's another when you wake up only to see that your phone restarted overnight and didn't boot because it needs to decrypt.

Google gave us a little sneak preview of Google Keyboard v5.1 in the Android N dev preview back in May. You could sideload that APK on other versions of Android to get the new themes, but now the final build appears to be hitting the Play Store. As with all Google releases, this one is staged. We've got the new version available for sideloading, though.

The big change in this version of the Google Keyboard is the vastly improved theme selector.

Pokèmon GO version 0.29.2 is available for download now, and adds support for Android N and Intel x86 hardware. Those are the most important changes - but another one quickly struck me after I updated my app: my Pokèmon historical capture maps are now much less precise and accurate. Let's go side by side - below you can see two screenshots, with the one on the left being version 0.29.0.

Pokémon GO goes to Germany officially and now works with Android Nougat [APK Download]

Posted: 13 Jul 2016 03:44 AM PDT

pokemon-go-germany-nougat

I'll let you in on a secret. I haven't played Pokémon GO yet. There was a time when I liked watching Pokémon and laughed my ass off each time Meowth came on the screen, but I was a little too old then to play the game or even get obsessed by it. I was... 17. So I don't get the craze behind GO all that much, but I'm not completely uninterested.

discogs-8

As a music lover, one of the first apps I looked for on Android way, way back in 2012 was a cataloging solution for my different albums and a way to browse artist releases à la IMDB. I quickly stumbled on the Discogs website, but for a long while, I couldn't find a decent app for the service on Android.

Hangouts 11 does away with merged conversations

Posted: 12 Jul 2016 07:59 PM PDT

hang

We've been expecting some changes to SMS functionality in Hangouts for some time, especially after Google started pushing Messenger as an SMS alternative inside Hangouts. As of Hangouts v11, it looks like the other shoe has dropped. This version of the app removes merged conversations as an option.

To be clear, Hangouts can still send SMS in v11. What it will not do is let you switch between Hangouts and SMS within a single conversation thread.

Hangouts 11 for Android finally adds support for video messaging (APK download)

Posted: 12 Jul 2016 06:16 PM PDT

hangouts11

Hangouts 11 for Android is here! Can you guess what it adds? No, not Allo, silly: it adds video messaging. Finally. Hangouts for iOS has supported the sending of video messages (or attachments, whatever you want to call them), and Android has mysteriously missed out on this feature to date. As of today, that changes - and we've got the APK for you to download. (Note: at the moment, we only have the arm64 aka 64-bit APK, so this will only work with 64-bit devices.

Android Distribution Numbers Out For July, Android 6.0 Marshmallow Soars To 13.3%

Posted: 12 Jul 2016 04:50 PM PDT

android_dist_july2016

We're now 12 days into July and Google has updated their Android Distribution Numbers accordingly. These numbers are updated by Google at roughly the start of every month for developers to look at so they can generalize what version of Android their potential install base is running and act upon it.

As of July 12th, Android 6.0 Marshmallow has reached 13.3%, with a record 3.2% increase from last month. Android 5.1 Lollipop also saw a slight increase of 0.8% to sit at 20.8%.

Almost every other version saw a decrease from last month with the most going to KitKat (decrease of 1.5%) except for Android 2.2 Froyo, which for some odd reason is still stuck at 0.1%.

Hopefully we'll see Froyo disappear completely by the time Android 7.0 Nougat makes its way to the charts later this year.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 launch event happening August 2

Posted: 12 Jul 2016 04:19 PM PDT

Mark your calendars, Android fans, because we now know when the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 will make its official debut.

Samsung will announce the Galaxy Note 7 on August 2. The main event will begin at 11:00 am ET in New York City, though there will be simultaneous launch events in Rio de Janeiro and London, too. Thankfully, Samsung will also be live streaming the event so that we don't all have to travel to see it introduce its next big thing.

"But wait," you say. "What happened to the Galaxy Note 6?" Samsung has helpfully provided an explanation as to why it's skipping 6 and going straight to 7:

"First and foremost though, you might be curious as to why it's called Galaxy Note7 instead of Galaxy Note6. There are a couple reasons why. First, the Galaxy Note7 will complement our Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, and unify our product portfolio. Second, the Galaxy Note7 will minimize confusion about the latest mobile technology from Samsung, and provide full alignment with Galaxy S smartphone."

Earlier this month, some leaked images gave us a peek at what the Galaxy Note 7 might look like. The design isn't terribly different from the Galaxy Note 5, but the next Note is rumored to feature some notable upgrades over its predecessor, including an iris scanner and a microSD slot. Also rumored to be included is a dual curved edge screen, which would give the Note 7 a display similar to the Galaxy S7 edge.

Are you excited for the Galaxy Note 7?
