ZTE announces the ZMAX PRO headed to MetroPCS

Posted: 18 Jul 2016 03:38 PM PDT

ZTE has announced the new ZMAX PRO, a smartphone that's coming to MetroPCS on August 1. And though it's only $99 after an instant rebate, it's not all that budget oriented.

ZTE claims that the ZMAX PRO is the first carrier-supported device in the US to feature a fingerprint reader under $100, which is impressive. Other specs include a 6-inch 1080p display, 13MP/5MP rear and front cameras, 32GB of storage with a microSD slot, and a 3,400mAh battery.

For a hundred bucks, the device seems like a pretty good deal. You'll be able to buy it on August 1, and if you pre-order it at MetroPCS, you'll get a free leather case by mail. Of course, budget devices like these will have some sacrifices. What do you guys think of this device? Leave a comment!

Moto Z Play may have 3.5mm headphone jack, unlike the Moto Z and Moto Z Force

Posted: 18 Jul 2016 03:38 PM PDT

When the Moto Z and Moto Z Force were announced, there was a controversy surrounding them because neither device comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack. They are some of the first high-end, mainstream devices to omit the headphone jack in favor of a lone USB Type-C adapter and a 3.5mm-to-Type-C adapter.

The Moto Z and Moto Z Force aren't going to see any changes, but it looks like people were unhappy enough to make Motorola listen. A leaked photo of what appears to be the Moto Z Play sandwiched between the Moto Z and Moto Z Force shows a 3.5mm headphone jack by a USB Type-C port.

Maybe the outcry over the lack of a headphone jack made Motorola change its mind, or maybe the lack of a headphone jack was meant only for its flagship all this time. Either way, hopefully this will please anyone who may be considering the Moto Z Play in the future.

It has been a couple of months since Play Books has been in the news, but there's a new update rolling out and it brings a couple of new features. Version 3.9 gives search a little more help with more thorough suggestions and adds a badge to series when new content hits the store. Those two things along with some other general bug fixes and improvements are certainly nice, but there are also a couple of things to talk about in a teardown.

Sony’s Upcoming Xperia F8331 Flagship Phone Leaked

Posted: 18 Jul 2016 01:23 PM PDT

Sony's Xperia X series has just made its way to Canada and now it looks like the Japanese company is actively testing their next flagship smartphone from the Xperia lineup.

According to GSMArena, they have received a couple leaked photos of a prototype Sony Xperia smartphone with model number F8331 showing a brand new design, a refreshing departure from the stale designs we've been seeing since the original Xperia Z.

The phone itself features a curved edge on both sides with the top and bottom sides being completely flat. The screen itself looks to be a 1080p panel but the glass seems to meet the curved edges similar to the Nexus 4 and BlackBerry Priv. As for the cameras, they are both capable of recording 4K. The rear camera sits on top of the dual-LED flash, which is accompained by what looks like an antenna.

While the phone still sports stereo speakers, the bezels on the top and bottom are quite big.

The phone could see a release during IFA 2016 in September.

Android Nougat’s final Developer Preview is now available

Posted: 18 Jul 2016 12:08 PM PDT

The public build-up for a new version of Android has grown drastically over the years. In the past, it was relatively secretive, with most testing happening behind closed doors. Today is a vastly different story, with Google publicly testing new versions of Android before they're released. The primary method of testing is through Developer Previews, which are early versions of the updated OS that generally aren't quite stable. Google collects feedback and uses that to improve the update and work out the bugs until a final version is ready.

Today brings us the final Developer Preview of Android Nougat, the next update to the world's largest mobile OS. This version quashes most existing bugs, with Google noting some specific errors or stability issues that are still present. There aren't any new additions, which is to be expected from a final preview. One interesting factor is that the Android version has been changed to Android 7.0 with this update, signalling that it's a significant update.

Remember that developer previews are not stable and flashing is done at your own risk. If that all sounds dandy to you, you can learn more at the source link below.

Final Developer Preview before Android 7.0 Nougat begins rolling out

Posted: 18 Jul 2016 10:19 AM PDT

Posted by Dave Burke, VP of Engineering

As we close in on the public rollout of Android 7.0 Nougat to devices later this summer, today we're releasing Developer Preview 5, the last milestone of this preview series. Last month's Developer Preview included the final APIs for Nougat; this preview gives developers the near-final system updates for all of the supported preview devices, helping you get your app ready for consumers.

Here's a quick rundown of what's included in the final Developer Preview of Nougat:

  • System images for Nexus and other preview devices
  • An emulator that you can use for doing the final testing of your apps to make sure they're ready
  • The final N APIs (API level 24) and latest system behaviors and UI
  • The latest bug fixes and optimizations across the system and in preinstalled apps

Working with this latest Developer Preview, you should make sure your app handles all of the system behavior changes in Android N, like Doze on the Go, background optimizations, screen zoom, permissions changes, and more. Plus, you can take advantage of new developer features in Android N such as Multi-window support, Direct Reply and other notifications enhancements, Direct boot, new emojis and more.

Publish your apps to alpha, beta or production channels in Google Play

After testing your apps with Developer Preview 5 you should publish the updates to Google Play soon. We recommend compiling against, and optionally targeting, API 24 and then publishing to your alpha, beta, or production channels in the Google Play Developer Console. A great strategy to do this is using Google Play's beta testing feature to get early feedback from a small group of users -- including Developer Preview users — and then doing a staged rollout as you release the updated app to all users.

How to get Developer Preview 5

If you are already enrolled in the Android Beta program, your devices will get the Developer Preview 5 update right away, no action is needed on your part. If you aren't yet enrolled in Android Beta, the easiest way to get started is by visiting android.com/beta and opt-in your eligible Android phone or tablet -- you'll soon receive this preview update over-the-air. As always, you can also download and flash this update manually. The Nougat Developer Preview is available for Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 9, and Pixel C devices, as well as General Mobile 4G [Android One] devices.

Thanks so much for all of your feedback so far. Please continue to share feedback or requests either in the N Developer Preview issue tracker, N Preview Developer community, or Android Beta community as we work towards the consumer release later this summer. Android Nougat is almost here!

Also, the Android engineering team will host a Reddit AMA on r/androidev to answer all your technical questions about the platform tomorrow, July 19 from 12-2 PM (Pacific Time). We look forward to addressing your questions!

Posted: 18 Jul 2016 08:53 AM PDT

And sure enough, Samsung's latest limited edition variant of the Galaxy S7 edge is now available for purchase unlocked from Best Buy for $849.99.

The power button is red, the volume rocker is green, and on the back, the Olympic rings are blue, with the same blue highlight around the camera and flash housing.

The Galaxy S7 edge Olympic Games Limited Edition features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor underneath a 5.5-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display. SoftBank is acquiring chip designer ARM for more than $31 billion

Posted: 18 Jul 2016 08:53 AM PDT

SoftBank has decided to open the week up with a major acquisition, spending a lot of money to acquire a chip manufacturer.

The Japanese company SoftBank, which also holds a majority stake in the U.S.-based Sprint and has its own mobile carrier in Japan, has acquired chip designer ARM Holdings for £24.3 billion, or $31.4 USD billion, cash. The details indicate that SoftBank plans on keeping the senior management at ARM in place and that the headquarters in Cambridge, England, will stay in place as well. The ARM brand isn't going anywhere any time soon.

What's more, SoftBank actually plans on expanding the ARM workforce in the United Kingdom, saying they'll at least double the employee count there over the next five years. SoftBank plans on adding to the workforce outside of the U.K. as well.

SoftBank's CEO, Masayoshi Son, had this to say about the deal:

"We have long admired ARM as a world renowned and highly respected technology company that is by some distance the market-leader in its field. ARM will be an excellent strategic fit within the SoftBank group as we invest to capture the very significant opportunities provided by the "Internet of Things".

"This investment also marks our strong commitment to the UK and the competitive advantage provided by the deep pool of science and technology talent in Cambridge. As an integral part of the transaction, we intend to at least double the number of employees employed by ARM in the UK over the next five years.

"SoftBank intends to invest in ARM, support its management team, accelerate its strategy and allow it to fully realise its potential beyond what is possible as a publicly listed company. It is also intended that ARM will remain an independent business within SoftBank, and continue to be headquartered in Cambridge, UK.

"This is one of the most important acquisitions we have ever made, and I expect ARM to be a key pillar of SoftBank's growth strategy going forward."

SoftBank has made some key acquisitions as it expands across the globe, first with Sprint in the United States and now ARM in the United Kingdom. While SoftBank already has a stake in the mobile market, with the purchase of ARM the company also sees a future in the Internet of Things, so it will be interesting to see what happens next.
