Corning unveils Gorilla Glass 5, headed to devices this year

Posted: 20 Jul 2016 03:10 PM PDT

When it comes to toughened displays, Corning's Gorilla Glass has been leading the way for quite a few years, and that trend continues with Corning's latest unveiling.

Corning has officially debuted Gorilla Glass 5, which the company says is "taking tough to new heights." Corning says that Gorilla Glass 5 survives drops up to four times better than competing glass designs. To prove their point, their tests showed when dropped face down onto rough surfaces from a distance of 1.6 meters, or 5.25 feet, Gorilla Glass 5 survived up to 80% of the time.

Corning's Gorilla Glass 5 is now available commercially, and the company says the strengthened displays will begin showing up in devices from "leading global brands" by the end of 2016.

Corning has been working on making displays less prone to shattering for years now, and it sounds like Gorilla Glass 5 certainly gets them one huge step in the right direction.

Versus Evil releases Guild of Dungeoneering, an RPG that will increase in price over time

Posted: 20 Jul 2016 01:51 PM PDT

guildofdun

Independent game publisher Versus Evil has so far released two Android games - The Banner Saga and Fear The Walking Dead: Dead Run, a tie-in with AMC's Fear the Walking Dead. Today it's third game hits the Play Store, titled Guild of Dungeoneering, a role-playing game based around restoring your guild to it's former glory in your role as Dungeon Master.

Dungeoneering is already available on Steam for Windows and macOS (the trailer above is for those versions, thus the cursor), so to see it come to Android should be a boost for the platform and Google Play.

Galaxy Note 7 Video Surfaces Online, Shows Off New TouchWiz

Posted: 20 Jul 2016 01:26 PM PDT

galaxynote7_evleaks_bottom

We're less than two weeks away from Samsung's upcoming Unpacked event on August 2nd, but the leaks just keep on coming.

The Galaxy Note 7 was spotted in the wild yet again, but this time on video. Unfortunately, the quality of the video itself was disappointing to say the least but we still get to take another look at the phone.

The video shows a screen protector maker testing the phone with their newest product, but in return giving us a look at the updated TouchWiz UI that many will expect to make its way to current Galaxy S7/Edge owners.

Additionally, Evan Blass has gladly provided another press render of the phone, clearly showing off the dual edged display, new colour scheme, S-Pen and USB C port on the bottom.

It has improved over time, and today it's getting a big update that might appease those who miss PS Touch. Now, you can have more layers and do more things with them.

Here's the full changelog for v2.0.

  • Ability to combine more than two layers: Create more complex images now that you can combine up to five layers in a single image.

The Google+ app is getting an update today, bringing the latest version to 8.3. The changes aren't going to be very extensive for most people, but there are signs that one highly requested feature will be coming in the future: image comments. It looks like there may also be some changes for community moderators either in place already, or coming soon.

SwiftKey launches Swiftmoji keyboard to help you find that perfect emoji

Posted: 20 Jul 2016 11:09 AM PDT

Finding an emoji that you want to use can sometimes mean a lot of scrolling, trying to find a specific little image in a sea of other little images. So SwiftKey wants to make it a lot easier with a brand new keyboard called Swiftmoji.

This is the first product launch the company has had since it was acquired by Microsoft earlier this year. With it, users will be able to quickly find a specific emoji without having to wade through the seemingly endless lists to get the perfect option when it's needed. Specifically, the emoji keyboard is built to predict which one you'll need next based on what you're typing.

Apparently you'll also be able to "EMOJI STORM" your contacts, too. There are custom theme colors for the keyboards, too, and the keyboard will even learn your emoji habits.

The free app is available right now, and you can install it through the link below. Do you use emoji enough to use a keyboard like this?

Facebook Messenger reaches 1 billion monthly active users milestone

Posted: 20 Jul 2016 10:08 AM PDT

In June of last year, Facebook officially announced that its Messenger app for Android had been downloaded more than one billion times. And in April of this year, the social network announced it had over 900 million active monthly users.

Fast-forward three months and Facebook is announcing yet another Messenger milestone: the app now sees over 1 billion active users every month. That means that in just over three months, Messenger has gained over 100 million active users.

Facebook is celebrating the milestone in its own special way: with an emoji. Sending a balloon emoji in a Facebook Messenger conversation will add "a touch of whimsy," which the social network is using to not only celebrate the milestone, but also thank all of the users who use the platform every single day.

Do you use Facebook Messenger or do you prefer a different messaging service?

Kairosoft, makers of Game Dev Story (who'd have thought a game about making games would be so addicting?!) have released their newest title in the long running simulation series: Legends of Heropolis, in which the player takes on the character of a hero to rebuild a desecrated town.

Like some of the recent Kairosoft games (although unlike Game Dev Story), Legends is ad-supported, meaning it is a free download from the Play Store.
