BBC begins global rollout of iPlayer Radio app

Posted: 07 Jul 2016 02:56 PM PDT

bbc

The BBC has offered the iPlayer Radio app since 2012 as a handy way to access its radio programming on mobile devices. However, it has always been limited to the UK. Starting today, iRadio is going global. Well, global-ish. It's only expanded to Ireland today, but the rollout should continue to the rest of the globe in short order.

The BBC's World Service in English boasts 66 million listeners around the world. When you open the Player app from outside the UK, it will default to the English station, but you can spin the dial to access more BBC radio streams.

Posted: 07 Jul 2016 12:14 PM PDT

Earlier this week, OnePlus released OxygenOS 3.2.0 to the OnePlus 3, but there was a bit of a hang-up with installation that caused OnePlus to pull the update. Now there's new software ready to go in the form of OxygenOS 3.2.1.

The new update is now rolling out to the OnePlus 3 owners, and hopefully it's got no installation issues. The update will be available on OnePlus 3 units that received OxygenOS 3.2.0 before it was pulled as well as the units that never received that failed software upgrade.

OxygenOS 3.2.1 includes RAM management improvements, sRGB display mode, and a slew of other tweaks and improvements.

Heres' the full OxygenOS 3.2.1 changelog, as issued by OnePlus:

  • Fixed some notification issues
  • Addressed SIM recognition issue
  • Enabled sRGB mode in developer options
  • Improved RAM management
  • Improved GPS performance
  • Enhanced audio playback quality
  • Updated custom icon packs
  • Improved camera quality/functionality
  • Fixed some issues in Gallery

  • Fixed bugs in Clock/Music apps

As with most over-the-air (OTA) updates, the OxygenOS 3.2.1 will roll out over time, so keep an eye out for it if you have a OnePlus 3.

Samsung intros Galaxy S7 edge Olympic Games Limited Edition

Posted: 07 Jul 2016 12:14 PM PDT

After introducing the Galaxy S7 edge Injustice Edition back in May, Samsung today revealed another limited version of their current flagship.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Olympic Games Limited Edition (that's a mouthful) is a special version of the GS7 edge for the upcoming Rio 2016 Olympic Games. What makes it special is its paint job, which utilizes the five colors of the Olympic rings. The body of the phone is black, the earpiece and home button accent are yellow, the power button is red, the volume buttons are green, and the camera housing and Olympic rings logo are blue.

The paint job isn't the only part of the GS7 edge Olympic Games Limited Edition that's special, though. Samsung is also decking the phone's software out in Olympic style, giving it Rio 2016 Olympic Games-themed wallpapers and using the colors of the Olympic rings throughout the user interface, including the home and lock screens, the dialer, and the notification shade.

galaxys7edgeolympicseditionsoftware

Samsung is giving this Galaxy S7 edge Olympic Games Limited Edition all 12,500 athletes that are competing in this year's games. Those athletes will also be getting a pair of Samsung's Gear IconX wireless earbuds.

The good news is that us non-competitors will be able to get one, too. Samsung says that it's releasing 2,016 phones (clever, Samsung) in select countries, including Brazil, the U.S., China, Germany, and Korea. In the U.S., Best Buy will be the retailer offering this special GS7 edge.

So what do you think of this Galaxy S7 edge Olympic Games Limited Edition? Will you try to buy one of your own?

There are plenty of annoying things about carriers in general and Verizon in particular. The craptastic mobile app is one of them, but it's somewhat less terrible today. The revamped My Verizon app announced alongside the new plans yesterday is now available for download.

According to Verizon, this app makes it easier to shop and see what's going on with your plan. The upgrade options (including the abusive, ridiculous Safety Mode) are also front and center.

Lyft

Pulling out your phone to request a Lyft will get you from point A to point B, but it won't be snazzy about it. You're looking for basic transportation, not a limosine.

But sometimes you want to make an impression. Or maybe you just want to rest your cheeks on more comfortable seats. Either way, Lyft now has an option: Lyft Premier.

Lyft Premier will seat you in a luxury sedan or SUV such as the Audi A6, BMW 5 series, Cadillac Escalade, or Lexus ES.

Bitly or bit.ly is one of many services that shorten your links and provide an easy to share URL for social networks. It mostly found its popularity due to Twitter's character limit, making it easy to insert links in any tweet without being tied by how long the original webpage URL is.

After years of existing on the web and integrating with different mobile apps through an API, Bitly is now releasing its official Android app.

DotEmu is in the business of taking the hits of yesteryear and porting them to mobile devices. Titan Quest isn't as retro as many games DotEmu has published, having just come out on PC 10 years ago (and was well-received). It still costs $15 on Steam, but you can get the Android version for $6.99 right now.

Titan Quest is a hack-and-slash RPG with a huge world to explore. Titan Quest is a much more in-depth game than you usually see on mobile. DotEmu promises more than 60 hours of gameplay, thousands of items, and dozens of creatures to fight.

Snapchat adds Memories: an easier way for you to find your best snaps and stories

snapchat-memories

Snapchat is where I personally drew the line on "I'm too old for this shit" and decided not to bother, but I still get the appeal of the ephemeral shares and I applaud the company for capturing such a dedicated userbase in a relatively short amount of time, despite the large competition in the social network space. But let's put my own thoughts about Snapchat aside and talk about the latest update to the app.

Pokémon GO officially available for Android phones in the U.S.

Posted: 06 Jul 2016 08:06 PM PDT

After hitting other parts of the globe last night, Pokémon GO has officially made its way to the U.S.

Pokémon GO is an augmented reality game that tasks you with walking around the real world and using your smartphone's camera to find and capture Pokémon. You'll see Pokémon randomly pop up on your smartphone's display, though you'll have better odds of finding some Pokémon at certain locations. For example, water Pokémon will likely appear near a lake or ocean.

pokemongoaam2

You can also join one of three teams and then battle your Pokémon at gyms, which are also found in the real world. If a gym belongs to your team, you can help defend it. If it doesn't, you can fight to defeat the gym. There are also PokéStops in the real world that you can visit to buy Poké Balls for catching more Pokémon, and other items for your journey.

Later this month, Pokémon GO users will be able to buy a Pokémon GO Plus. This device connects to your smartphone over Bluetooth and can be worn as you're walking around the world. When you're wearing it, it'll alert you when a Pokémon is nearby without requiring you to be looking at your smartphone.

pokemongoaam3

Pokémon GO requires an Android smartphone with 2GB of RAM and Android 4.4 or higher. It won't work with Intel Atom-based devices, and compatibility isn't guaranteed for Wi-Fi-only devices, tablets, or devices without GPS. The game is free-to-play, but there are in-app purchases that'll let you buy PokéCoins, which can be used to buy more Poké Balls, an incense lure, and other items.

Pokémon GO is made by Niantic Labs, which you may remember as the group behind Ingress. Because of this, you know that the game is coming from some folks with AR chops. Pokémon GO looks like a pretty fun game, especially for anyone that's played the Game Boy or DS games. If you've got any interest in trying Pokémon GO, visit the Play Store and give it a try!

Final Fantasy VII. For Android. Do I need to say anything else? Probably, because this post needs some words, so let's get to it! FFVII was released for iOS last summer. The Android version, like the iOS version, will cost you a dear $15.99 to pick up, as well as your trust that Square Enix has done this properly for a touchscreen experience. The app is not listed as compatible with Android TV devices, sadly.
