Samsung exec confirms Galaxy Note 7 with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage, exclusive to China

Posted: 11 Aug 2016 02:14 PM PDT

Samsung's latest flagship phablet, the now official Galaxy Note 7, has plenty of specs that are worth paying attention to, even if most of them are also found on the Galaxy S7 edge. However, those in China may be getting an even more powerful device.

According to Samsung's head of mobile, DJ Koh, a Galaxy Note 7 variant outfitted with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in storage is indeed real, but it won't be making its way out of the Chinese market. According to Koh, the reason the upgraded Galaxy Note 7 exists at all is to combat other monstrously-specced devices also available in China. The top-tier device has already made its way through the Chinese TENAA for certification, an organization similar to the FCC in the United States, so its arrival is probably right around the corner.

It's probably worth noting that the "standard" Galaxy Note7, which features 4GB of RAM and 64GB of built-in storage, retails for more than $800 in the United States, so bumping up the memory and RAM would inevitably make that price tag even higher.

Would you pay a higher premium to get your hands on a Galaxy Note7 with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in storage?

PSA: The new Bluetooth-enabled Xbox One controller works with Android... but not very well

Posted: 11 Aug 2016 12:43 PM PDT

2016-08-11 18The Xbox 360 controller has been the de facto standard for years (NVIDIA copied it almost exactly for the SHIELD line), and the Xbox One has a refined and streamlined version of that design. So when Microsoft announced that a shiny new revision of the Xbox One controller would not only let you choose your colors and engraving Moto Maker-style, but also include a Bluetooth connection for easy dongle-free pairing with PCs, I couldn't help but get excited.

Lenovo teases new Moto Mods and tablets for IFA 2016

Posted: 11 Aug 2016 12:26 PM PDT

Earlier this year Motorola launched the Moto Z and Moto Z Force flagships, both of which support a modular design for attaching Moto Mods to the backs of the handsets. Those initial Mods include a projector and external speaker, but left many wanting more.

Lenovo has begun teasing what it has planned for the IFA conference. There isn't a lot to go in with this video, but Lenovo is obviously teasing new Moto Mods for the Moto Z family of devices and also dropping hints that the company has new tablets on the way.

Whether or not those tablets will run Android or Microsoft's Windows 10 remains to be seen.

There is a possibility that Lenovo will reveal a brand new Moto 360 smartwatch, too. One potentially exciting thing, but not necessarily restricted to just Android, is Lenovo's hint that they'll be showing off a brand new "intuitive keyboard." Lenovo's IFA event is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, August 31, so the wait won't be too long.

You can check out the video below. What types of Moto Mods would you like to see for the Moto Z?

One Night in Karazhan, Hearthstone’s latest expansion, is out

one-night-in-karazhan-trailer-details.jpg.optimal

While perhaps my own involvement with Blizzard Entertainment's Hearthstone has waned in recent months, due in no small part to other games that have nabbed my attention, the online card-based arena battle game is no less extremely popular. When Blizzard released the large patch 6.0.0.13921 on August 9, quite a few players began to eagerly await the latest single-player expansion that releases on all platforms today.

Titled One Night in Karazhan, this expansion brings a whole new adventure for players to explore, new cards to add to their decks, and a "groovy" new game board to enjoy.

[APK Download] Chrome for Android Beta 53 enables the new Payment Request API, allows muted video to auto-play

Posted: 11 Aug 2016 11:14 AM PDT

payment apiThere are some neat things coming to Chrome in the future, and if you'd like to test them out before everyone else, you're probably already using either the Beta or the Dev version of the Android app. Keep an eye on the former: it's getting some of said features right now. The most interesting addition in version 53 is a new API for quickly checking out on mobile online purchases. It's sort of like the streamlined payment options already offered by PayPal and Visa, but it works with any payment system and it's built into the browser.

CVS Pay is a new mobile payment option to use at CVS pharmacies

Posted: 11 Aug 2016 10:14 AM PDT

CVS is a retailer that made news for its disabling of Android Pay and Apple Pay support at its pharmacies across the United States. It was just one of many businesses that had decided to make this move, and, like some of those others, it has even launched its own mobile payment service.

The new service is called CVS Pay, and it's a barcode-based mobile payment option. The new service is built into the official CVS Pharmacy app (for Android and iOS), and it supports the major credit and debit card issuers.

Users will show the barcode within the app to the CVS pharmacy employee who will scan it, and then the user can select the payment method they want to use to checkout. For folks that want to use the drive-thru window, there's a pickup number that will be registered so the driver can use the mobile payment option. There are specific barcodes for prescription pickup, too, and the app supports CVS's ExtraCare loyalty program.

CVS Pay officially supports debit and credit cards issued by Discover, American Express, Visa, and MasterCard. It also supports Health Savings Accounts, and Flexible Spending Account cards.

CVS has confirmed that CVS Pay is available in Delaware, New York, New Jersey, and in Pennsylvania. The company plans on rolling out support nationwide, to over 9,600 pharmacies, later in the year.

LG aims for superior sound with a Quad DAC in the V20

Posted: 11 Aug 2016 09:09 AM PDT

LG is slowly building up the hype for its upcoming V20 smartphone, which looks to be the company's next flagship. So far, LG has given us a reveal date and has announced that the V20 will be the first phone running Android 7.0 Nougat. Now LG is letting us in on another tidbit, which is that the LG V20 will be the world's first smartphone to feature a Quad DAC. What does that mean? Let's unpack it.

DAC is short for digital-to-analog converter, and essentially its task is to convert digital sound into an analog signal for wired headphones. Utilizing a 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC will allow the LG V20 to deliver superior sound to compatible wired headphones. LG is heavily touting the fact that a Quad DAC can reduce up to 50% of ambient noise levels, leading to crisper, clearer sound. The V20 will also take advantage of the Quad DAC when recording videos, allowing it to capture better sound than other smartphones.

LG says that "the Quad DAC is the lynchpin of the many cutting-edge multimedia features included in the LG V20," leading us to believe that the V20 will sell itself primarily on being an entertainment-centric device. We don't know enough of the other specs to be sure, but so far, we'd be inclined to say that LG is heading in that direction.

As we grow closer to the official announcement on September 6, we'll keep you up to date with further teasers from LG.

Flow Home launcher is dead, but bits will be open-sourced soon

FlowHomeHero

It is a sad fact of life that interesting, new concepts or ideas find it hard to set the world alight because generally, we humans don't like change. That's the basic message from Larva Labs, the team behind the Flow Home launcher, which has announced that it is discontinuing active development on the app, apart from some minor updates and bug fixes.

The idea behind Flow Home was instead of showing icons, to display the thing inside the icon: pictures, videos, news, tweets, or status updates (among others).

Posted: 11 Aug 2016 05:38 AM PDT

PlayStore

According to several tips from Android Police readers, the Google Play Store may not require you to have a Google+ account to write reviews anymore. This news comes hot on the heels of reports that the +1 button is disappearing from the Play Store (which Artem is still devastated about, by the way). In fact, the two situations are very likely related.

This is a change that will undoubtedly be appreciated by many.

ASUS makes the switch to a round display in the ZenWatch 3

Posted: 10 Aug 2016 09:05 PM PDT

It wasn't so long ago that smartwatches were the tech of the future, with plenty of concepts and ideas being tossed around. These days, however, smartwatches have become far more commonplace, with options available in all different shapes and sizes. When it comes to Android Wear devices, round is becoming the way to go, with more and more manufacturers opting for round displays and the more traditional watch design that accompanies a round display.

ASUS was one of the first Android Wear manufacturers, creating the ZenWatch, which sported a square display. The successor, the ZenWatch 2, also featured a square display. According to an FCC filing, however, that looks to be changing with the ZenWatch 3. The label location diagram reveals that the ZenWatch 3 will indeed have a round display. Details are sparse, but we can also find that it will have a stainless steel body, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 4.2.

Asus-Zenwatch-3

There's no confirmed reveal date for the ZenWatch 3, but we may very well see it at IFA in a few weeks. It's also possible that it could be released alongside Android Wear 2.0, as one of the first devices to launch with the new OS. We'll keep you posted with further updates on the ASUS ZenWatch 3.

Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides improve tables and charts on Android [APK Download]

Posted: 10 Aug 2016 08:24 PM PDT

docs LEEK

Tables and charts are some of the most commonly used elements in Google's Drive suite of apps, but they can be a little clunky on mobile. Today, Google has updated Docs, Slides, and Sheets on Android to make these organizational tools easier to use than ever before.

After the update, copying cells from the Sheets app and pasting into either Docs or Slides will automatically produce a fully formatted table. However, this functionality won't work with selections of more than 400 cells (you should probably be doing that on a computer anyway).
