Leaked images of ASUS ZenWatch 3 show off round body

Posted: 12 Aug 2016 03:16 PM PDT

The FCC filing for the ASUS ZenWatch 3 has already shown us that the device will feature a round display, thanks to the round label in the filing. Unfortunately, the filing was lacking in photos, which is probably what ASUS wanted.

Fortunately for us, TENAA (the Chinese FCC) was not so secretive, and we now have photos of the ZenWatch 3. The round display is indeed real, and the design is very traditional and classy. It has three buttons on the side, a multi-color metal design, and two pins on the back for charging.

Unfortunately, it does seem that ASUS moved away from the ZenWatch being a thin smartwatch. The last two models were quite thin, which I know a lot of people preferred. This will be just another round and thick smartwatch, something that doesn't tend to stand out in the market.

What do you guys think of the upcoming ZenWatch 3? Is it an improvement over last year's design, or does it now look generic? Leave a comment!

DisplayMate finds Galaxy Note 7 display is brightest ever tested

Posted: 12 Aug 2016 02:16 PM PDT

Samsung has been a leader in mobile display quality for quite a while. The AMOLED panels in the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge were rated by DisplayMate to be the best so far, but the Galaxy Note 7 seems to have set a new record.

The screen on the Note 7 reached a peak brightness of 1048 nits in auto brightness mode, which is almost 200 nits brighter than the Galaxy S7. It's the brightest display that DisplayMate has ever tested by a good margin, which is very impressive.

The company also talked about other things Samsung did right with the display, including the dual ambient light sensors for better auto brightness. Hit the source link to read more!

Sony offering beta test of Nougat for Xperia X Performance in some regions

Posted: 12 Aug 2016 02:16 PM PDT

Sony is no stranger to offering beta versions of Android to test on its devices. The company would offer Android 6.0 Marshmallow to a limited amount of devices for testers, which was and is unheard of for other companies.

Now the company is offering Android 7.0 Nougat to test out through the Xperia Beta Program, though it's only available to a limited set of people. The test is for the Xperia X Performance and is only available in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Iceland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands.

The beta test is very limited, so if you're interested in testing out Nougat on your device, hit the source link and sign up quick. Hopefully the popularity of this program will bring it to other countries and devices, though folks in the US shouldn't keep their hopes up.

Android Pay v1.5 prepares to show new users where to find NFC on their phones and might be experimenting with the secure element again [APK Teardown]

Posted: 12 Aug 2016 01:12 PM PDT

There are a lot of factors playing into the success and failure of mobile payment systems. Perhaps the most challenging issue for Android Pay to overcome isn't the slow adoption of compatible payment terminals or the general lack of awareness about contactless payments, it's the confusion people experience once they decide to try it. While many users are nervous simply because they don't know what to expect, some others are confronted with an even bigger challenge: they have no idea where the NFC antenna is on their phone.

Details leak on the HTC Desire 10 Lifestyle

Posted: 12 Aug 2016 12:18 PM PDT

HTC has had some struggles in recent years, but the company has always found a fair amount of success in its Desire lineup of mid-range smartphones. HTC is again turning to that line for 2016, with details leaking on two new arrivals, the Desire 10 Pro and the Desire 10 Lifestyle. Both devices are taking advantage of the 10 branding from the flagship HTC 10, but this latest leak from VentureBeat only has details on the Desire 10 Lifestyle. Here's a breakdown of what we can expect to see:

  • 5.5-inch 720p display
  • Quad-core Snapdragon processor
  • 2GB/3GB of RAM
  • 16GB/32GB of storage
  • 13-megapixel rear camera
  • 5-megapixel front-facing camera
  • BoomSound stereo speakers
  • Android 6.0 Marshmallow with HTC Sense

The Desire 10 Lifestyle is reportedly the lower-specced of the two models. In addition to the BoomSound speakers, HTC is also bundling earbuds that will have an increased frequency range, making the Desire 10 Lifestyle have something of a focus on audio.

As far as the design goes, we're told to expect solid colors with a matte finish. There will be a metallic trim surrounding the edges of the device and extending as accents to areas such as the power button and camera.

Both devices are slated for release at the end of September, and there aren't any details regarding pricing. With the specs, we'd expect the Desire 10 Lifestyle to be fairly affordable, as it's not aiming for a flagship market. With the unknown specs of the Desire 10 Pro, it's hard to say where that device will fall in the hierarchy of things.

We'll keep you posted on any further updates or leaks.

Mars: Mars is a delightful low-poly platformer mixed with an endless runner

Posted: 12 Aug 2016 11:13 AM PDT

NASA has plans in place to send astronauts to Mars in the next few decades. When they get there, I imagine it'll be pretty much exactly like Mars: Mars. This game takes place on Mars as you hop between platforms, exploring the surface, taking selfies (even Curiosity does it), and bringing new explorers to the planet.

All you have to do in this game is leap from one platform to the next, making use of your suit's thrusters to control your descent in Mars' low gravity.

Google TalkBack gets a new icon as v5.0.4 rolls out more widely

Posted: 12 Aug 2016 10:42 AM PDT

Google's TalkBack is something many of us have no use for, but it can be a critical tool for those who do need it. Google first released TalkBack 5.0.2 back in June with Android N Developer Preview 4, but it wasn't covered by AP. That version brought a new, more Material icon, and a menu for Text-to-speech settings. 5.0.4 is the first version available for non-N Preview devices that brings the new icon, Text-to-speech menu, and one new change.

Dropsy from Devolver Digital is now live in the Play Store with hugs for all

Posted: 12 Aug 2016 10:27 AM PDT

To call Dropsy a weird game would be a profound understatement—it's bizarre in the extreme. After a suspicious circus fire, Dropsy the clown embarks on a quest to clear his name and get some hugs. This game really emphasizes the hugs. It's a classic point-and-click game, but it's unlike anything I've seen before.

Dropsy is an open world game, allowing you to explore the story in whatever way you like. There are puzzles to solve, people to meet, and secrets to uncover.

Samsung teasing Gear S3 smartwatch for IFA 2016

Posted: 12 Aug 2016 09:13 AM PDT

Last year at IFA, Samsung unveiled the Gear S2 smartwatch. Now it looks like the company's gearing up to announce the S2′s follow up at IFA 2016.

Samsung has begun sending out invitations for the company's event at this year's IFA, which takes place around the beginning of September every year. In Samsung's case, the event will take place on September 1, and the invitation seems to give away that Samsung will be showing off a new Gear S smartwatch.

Samsung IFA 2016 Gear S3

The invite doesn't say that it will be called the Gear S3, of course, but that seems to be a logical conclusion. Whatever changes Samsung has in store for the new wearable remain a mystery for now, but considering the strides Samsung made with the Gear S2 last year, it's likely the new wearable will be worth paying attention to.

A smart home is every geek's dream, so it's great to see the idea becoming more and more of a reality, with Nest, Alexa, Google Assistant (soon), and Apple's HomeKit making our homes smarter and automated. Accessory maker Logitech, which already has the Harmony Remote, is adding to its range with the Logitech POP button and accompanying app.

The POP can control a lot of devices, from Phillips Hue lightbulbs to Sonos speakers, to door locks and blinds, plus of course the Harmony platform.

Spotify introduces new Gaming category with playlists and soundtracks from your favorite games

Posted: 12 Aug 2016 06:20 AM PDT

I'm not an avid gamer: puzzles, math games, brain teasers, anything that requires a bit of thinking and doesn't involve plot twists, that's my jam. But I know a lot of people who are taken by games, whether classics or new releases, and I know that many of them are completely fascinated by the music and soundtracks that accompany these games.

That's the category of players that Spotify is catering to with its latest Gaming category addition.

Aviary Photo Editor adds more fonts, transform tool, and option to clone effects between photos

Posted: 12 Aug 2016 06:05 AM PDT

If I had a dime for every photo editor I come across on Android, I'm sure I'd easily have a couple of thousand bucks by now. But Aviary is slightly different. It was acquired by Adobe in 2014 because of its large selection of filters and effects, and the company has been enhancing it since: Material Design, free and premium features, and so on. The latest updated to version 4.8.0 brings 3 new interesting features and improves on an existing one.

Posted: 11 Aug 2016 11:39 PM PDT

We haven't seen new Moto Mods since the initial unveil of the Moto Z release back in June, but it looks like Lenovo is set to announce something soon.

A teaser video from Lenovo has surfaced online hinting at a "new chapter in tablets", new Moto Mods for the Moto Z, a "whole new kind of intuitive keyboard." and even "devices that blur the line between creativity and productivity". Whatever these marketing terms really mean, just be sure there will be new hardware announced during IFA 2016.

The video also contains various Moto 360 models which could hint at a possible Lenovo smartwatch.
