Google's video chat app Duo will support audio-only calls soon

Posted: 17 Aug 2016 03:41 PM PDT

unnamedGoogle finally released Duo the other day nearly three months after announcing it. The pitch for Duo at I/O was that it makes video chat really quick and easy—it makes video chat simple, but what about audio calls? A Googler says that's coming too.

This news comes by way of Amit Fulay, Google's product lead for communication. Fulay was responding to a query on G+ when he stated plainly that audio-only calls are coming to the app "soon." Of course, that's a "Google soon." It could mean in a week or later this year.

Square Enix releases Deus Ex GO, a turn-based take on the fan-favorite franchise

Posted: 17 Aug 2016 01:22 PM PDT

didn't ask for thisAdam Jensen, cyborg protagonist of the well-received Deus Ex: Human Revolution and its upcoming sequel Mankind Divided, didn't ask for this. It's something he likes to remind everyone right before he hacks through a locked door, sneaks behind a cybernetic guard, and impales him with an augmented blade-limb. And we didn't ask for Deus Ex GO, a turn-based, board game-style reinterpretation of the series for mobile phones and tablets... but we're glad it's here anyway.

Nokia confirms at least three upcoming Android devices, may be announced this year

Posted: 17 Aug 2016 01:09 PM PDT

Nokia is a brand that's nearly universally loved for its last phones, and we wish the company would make a big comeback and once again release amazing devices. Nokia's Microsoft partnership really didn't help the company succeed, but thankfully, we may see an unlikely but possible resurgence soon.

Nokia executive Mike Wang stated that there will be at least three Android devices coming soon, and two of them will be flagships.

These two and one / two more Nokia Android smartphones are planned for unveil towards end of the year 2016, but depending upon testing and development launch date may move to Q1 2017 too.

The two flagships are rumored to have 5.2 and 5.5-inch QHD OLED displays, Snapdragon 820 processors, 22.6MP graphene cameras, metal construction, water and dust resistance, and Android 7.0 Nougat. One or two other devices will be unveiled at the same time, though they're likely lower-end.

This is definitely exciting news, as I know a lot of people want to see more of Nokia, especially in the Android world. The devices should be announced later this year, so we don't have long to wait. How many of you are excited?

AT&T’s new Mobile Share Advantage plans offer more data at lower cost per megabyte

Posted: 17 Aug 2016 12:05 PM PDT

It's been a year since AT&T made some changes to its Mobile Share plans, and so it's about time that the big blue carrier introduced some alterations to its plan offerings. This time around there are more changes in store, including a lower price per megabyte.

AT&T is calling its new plans the Mobile Share Advantage, and with it the carrier is offering two new monthly data allotments for subscribers, dropping overage charges, and charging less per megabyte, too. The plans that AT&T launched and tweaked last year are still available right now, and they offer 300MB for $20 per month, 2GB for $30 per month, 5GB for $50 per month, 15GB for $100 per month, 20GB for $140 per month, 25GB for $175 per month, and 30GB for $225 per month.

The new Mobile Share Advantage plans will launch on August 21. With it, AT&T is introducing a new 6GB of data tier for $60 per month and a new 10GB tier for $80 per month. Here's what the new plan offerings look like:

AT&T new data plans

One of the most notable changes with the Mobile Share Advantage plans is the fact that AT&T no longer charging for data overages. Currently, AT&T charges $15 per gigabyte when you go over your monthly data allotment. With the new plans, AT&T will instead slow down your data connection to a maximum of 128kbps until your data allotment resets.

Samsung and Barnes & Noble launch the Galaxy Tab A NOOK for $139.99

Posted: 17 Aug 2016 10:09 AM PDT

Last year, Samsung and Barnes & Noble launched the Galaxy Tab S2 NOOK, a brand new tablet that paired the B&N brand with Samsung's Galaxy tablet hardware. Now the two companies are back with a brand new tablet.

There are actually quite a few changes in this newest tablet compared to the device launched last year, starting with the display. Last year's model featured an 8-inch 2048×1536 Super AMOLED display, which certainly helped it stand out. This year's model has a 7-inch display with a resolution of 1280×800. Interestingly enough, this newest tablet is only running Android 5.1 Lollipop, but it does retain access to the Google Play Store, so owners can install Android apps, too.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A NOOK2

The standard features are in place for a tablet that's all about reading featuring content from Barnes & Noble, including eBooks, magazines and newspapers, as well as "B&N Readouts," which will bring a daily refresh of book, magazine, and newspapers excerpts to get caught up on.

The specs for the new Galaxy Tab A NOOK include: 7-inch display, 4,000mAh battery, 8GB of built-in storage, a microSD card slot that supports cards up to 200GB, microUSB 2.0, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and Wi-Fi connectivity. There's a 5MP camera on the back, and a 2MP front-facing camera on the other side.

The Galaxy Tab A NOOK doesn't appear to support digital audiobooks just yet, as the official press release notes that support for that particular feature will arrive sometime in September, following a software update.

As far as release and pricing go, the Galaxy Tab A NOOK is available right now for $139.99 from Barnes & Noble's website.

LG X power headed to Cricket Wireless with its 4,100mAh battery in tow

Posted: 17 Aug 2016 09:14 AM PDT

Back in June of this year, LG officially debuted a series of new devices under the X brand, each of which focuses on one particular feature. For instance, the X power boasts a large battery. Cricket Wireless customers who are looking for a phone with a big battery will soon be able to buy the X power and its large battery pack.

Cricket has officially announced that it will be adding the LG X power to its roster of phones beginning Friday, August 26. The device boasts the same specs as the device launched two months ago: a 5.3-inch 720p HD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor, an 8MP camera on the back and a 5MP camera on the front. The X power also features 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage, with a microSD card slot for expandable storage. It's running Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box, too.

The most important aspect of the phone, though, is its battery. LG's crammed a 4,100mAh battery inside as well as QuickCharge 2.0 technology.

As far as retail goes, as mentioned above it launches on August 26 and it will be priced at $159.99. However, if you port your number into Cricket Wireless and buy the LG X power, the price will drop to $129.99.

[100% Chance Of Pants] New weather app matches questionable fashion with current conditions

Posted: 17 Aug 2016 08:39 AM PDT

I'm the first to admit I do not understand fashion, but I do have a pretty good grasp on the basics of weather. A new app called Skyler matches what I assume is trendy fashion up with the current conditions so you'll never again have to stress about how to dress for the weather. And of course, all the clothing is totally practical and not weird at all. Nah, I'm kidding.

Google updates Santa Tracker open source code with changes from last Christmas

Is it Christmas time already? Not quite, but we don't have long before kids start counting down the days to Santa's visit. When they ask, Google is again ready to provide an answer.

Last April, Google open sourced Santa Tracker and its various components. Then it developed new experiences to show off around Christmas time. Eight months later, that code is now open source as well.

Again, these changes affect the Santa Tracer Android app, Santa's Village, and several games.

Google’s New Duo Video Chat App Starts Rolling Out

Posted: 16 Aug 2016 10:58 PM PDT

Google initially revealed Duo, the company's new Facetime competitor, at Google I/O earlier this year. The company recently announced that the app would go live for everyone around the world in the next few days. At least in the US and for some in Canada, the app is available to download from the Play Store.

The app's main focus is to bring a simplified, cross platform video chat to anyone, anywhere since it works on both Android and iOS devices. All you need to get started is a phone number and you'll be ready to use it with friends and family.

The app also contains a feature, exclusive to Android, called Knock Knock. Essentially, if you were to receive a call with Knock Knock, you would be able to view a live video of the other person waiting for you to answer.

Allo is still missing and there's no word from Google as to when it will be available. If for some reason you can't download the app, an APK be found here.

Huawei Honor 8 with dual 12MP cameras headed to the U.S. in early September

Posted: 16 Aug 2016 10:13 PM PDT

In July, Huawei officially announced the Honor 8, a flagship handset which boasts a pair of 12-megapixel cameras on the back of the handset and plenty of other noteworthy features for good measure.

Unfortunately, at the time, Huawei only announced the Honor 8 for China, but expectations for a future launch in the United States were high. And, sure enough, the wait is almost over. Huawei held an event today that officially announced the future arrival of the Honor 8 in the United States. It will become available from a variety of stores when it launches in September.

As far as specifications go, the Honor 8 boasts a 5.2-inch IPS LCD 1080p HD display, and there is a HiSilicon Kirin 950 octa-core processor under the hood. On the back, as mentioned earlier, there are a pair of 12-megapixel cameras, outfitted with f/2.2 1.25-micron pixel equivalent. On the front, there's an 8MP front-facing camera. There's 4GB of RAM in both the 32GB model variant, as well as the option that boasts 64GB of built-in storage.

The Honor 8 also features USB Type-C, a battery measured in at 3000mAh with QuickCharge 2.0, a fingerprint reader on the back, and it will be offered in Pearl White, Sapphire Blue, and Midnight Black. The Honor 8 is running Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box, under Huawei's proprietary EMUI 4.1 user interface.

Honor 8 US live

The Honor 8 is priced at $399 for the 32GB model, and $449 for the 64GB variant. It will be available from Amazon, Best Buy, B&H Photo Video, and Newegg, as well as Honor's official online store, beginning in early September. Pre-orders will start on August 17 and will run until September 3.

The Sapphire Blue option will be a Best Buy exclusive for the first 60 days, for those curious about that particular model. On top of that, participating retailers will throw in a $50 gift card with pre-orders.

Sprint stores will say goodbye to two-year contracts on August 26

Posted: 16 Aug 2016 09:13 PM PDT

Ever since the start of 2016, Sprint has had a love-hate relationship with two-year contracts. In early January they ditched them, but then in February brought them back because they said customers wanted them as an option.

Travel back to May of this year and it was rumored that Sprint would be ending two-year contracts, yet again. That didn't pan out as expected, but only because Sprint took a bit longer to reach that destination. As reported by PhoneArena, Sprint is now in the "final moves" to say goodbye to two-year contracts, at least when it comes to offering them in its physical stores.

Sprint two-years goodbye

The document shared in the original report is backed up by a Sprint assistant store manager publishing content on Reddit, both of which say Sprint stores will stop offering two-year contracts on Friday, August 26. So you want to pick up a new smartphone in a store, you'll need to do so with a lease or an installment plan.

It's worth noting that Sprint customers will apparently still be able to get two-year contracts after August 26 via telesales or on Sprint.com. Sprint will offer two-year contracts for tablets and mobile broadband devices.

The surprising part isn't so much that Sprint is ending two-year contracts, just like the other carriers have, but the way that Sprint has handled it up until this point. After all, while the leaked document says the contracts will stop being offered by August 26, there's no guarantee it will happen.

Are you still attached to a two-year contract?
