Honor announces at least 24 months of software support for this year’s devices

Posted: 19 Aug 2016 03:14 PM PDT

With the announcement of the new Honor 8, some were wondering if a brand many in the U.S. don't know can keep up with software updates. Now the company has pledged future software support for the device and other devices for at least 24 months.

Devices will get at least one update every three months for the first year, then updates as necessary for at least another year after its launch. This includes both new versions of Android as well as security fixes. And while updates after that aren't guaranteed, the company can update devices further if future security threats arrive.

While it's no monthly security update that Google does, this is a big step towards good security for those who keep their phones longer than some of us enthusiasts do. What do you think of Honor's commitment to updates? Will this encourage you to pick up one of its devices? Leave a comment!

Google is phasing out Chrome apps except on Chrome OS, will no longer work by 2018

Posted: 19 Aug 2016 02:21 PM PDT

Google Chrome has been undergoing a massive amount of changes recently. From massive optimizations, to the Android New Tab page showing Google Now cards, to Progressive Web Apps blurring the line between native and web apps.

But in another change, although not entirely shocking, Google will be phasing out Chrome apps on the Chrome Web Store. If you've never used the Chrome Web Store, most of the items listed are branded as applications, but are in fact simply links to websites or web applications.

Some Galaxy Note 7 colors might be hard to come by at launch

Posted: 19 Aug 2016 11:09 AM PDT

Today marks the official launch of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. Its available in a variety of colors and locales around the globe, but some customers that pre-ordered certain variants of the newest flagship phablet are finding delay notices in their inboxes rather than phones on their doorsteps.

A report from Android Central, citing unnamed sources, says that pre-orders made for the Blue Coral and Silver Titanium variants of the Galaxy Note 7 in the United States and Canada may have to wait up to three weeks for those orders to be delivered. The report states that it isn't manufacturing issues this time around causing the delay, but rather Samsung underestimating the pre-order numbers for those particular models.

In a statement to AC, Samsung Canada said, "We've experienced an unprecedented number of pre-orders and we're excited to begin fulfilling orders on August 19th. Over the coming weeks, we'll work with our valued carrier and retail partners to provide wide-reaching national retail availability." Other carriers, both in the United States and in Canada, did not provide responses.

If you pre-ordered the Coral Blue or Silver Titanium Galaxy Note7, have you received your device? Or do you have to wait for your new smartphone? Let us know in the comments.

Unlike Hangouts, Allo lets you delete messages from your chat history

Posted: 19 Aug 2016 10:16 AM PDT

Aside from the privacy of Incognito chats in Google's upcoming Allo app, there's one more way you can save yourself from embarrassment if you sent or received something that you don't want to stay in your chat's history: delete.

Based on the screenshots we've obtained from people testing a preview version of Allo, it looks like you'll be able to select any message (no multiple select yet we're told) and just delete it from the chat's history.

Google Play Music on the web tweaks playlist UI, adds sliding panel on the right for quick access

Posted: 19 Aug 2016 09:46 AM PDT

In a move that strikes a balance between becoming more consistent with the mobile apps and giving desktop users the best experience possible, Google has made some tweaks to Play Music's playlist interface. While playlists are no longer on the top level of the left-side hamburger menu—to be more like the phone and tablet UI—web users can use a shortcut to access a new sliding menu from the right.

Previously, playlists were jammed into the main hamburger menu on the left side.

Q*bert Rebooted comes to NVIDIA SHIELD devices

Posted: 19 Aug 2016 09:11 AM PDT

Many years ago, people would pour quarters into arcade machines to play Q*bert. You are much more lucky—you can get Q*bert Rebooted for SHIELD at the low price of $5.99 and it's yours forever. This is a special edition title with improved visuals, but it's only for SHIELD devices.

Q*bert Rebooted offers two play modes; there's the classic version of the game and rebooted with some alterations to the gameplay and visuals. The classic one preserves the blocky pixelated style of the original game, but the rebooted version adds some new elements.

Android 7.0 Nougat Update Coming August 22nd According To TELUS

Posted: 18 Aug 2016 06:56 PM PDT

It's that time of the year when the next version of Android is literally right around the corner. It's been widely accepted that Android 7.0 Nougat is set to come out by the end of this month however we didn't have a firm date until now.

According to TELUS' software update schedule page, the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P have been listed to receive the Android Nougat update next Monday, August 22nd. Do note that this date could very well change but TELUS was correct when it stated the release date of Android 6.0 Marshmallow last year for "October 5th, 2015".

Unfortunately, nothing was said whether or not the Nexus 6 will be getting the update that same day or if the Nexus 5 will be updated at all.

ASUS teases something incredible at IFA

Posted: 18 Aug 2016 05:59 PM PDT

ASUS is already teasing what it has in store for us at IFA Berlin 2016, claiming something incredible is coming. Unfortunately, there is literally zero indication of what's coming in the image, so we can't say what it will be.

We might see the ZenWatch 3 at IFA Berlin, which drops the slim square shape for a bulkier round body according to leaks. Or we might see something else entirely.

What are you looking forward to seeing from ASUS at IFA this year?
