AT&T LG V10 getting update with WiFi Calling

Posted: 23 Aug 2016 04:10 PM PDT

AT&T has released a new software update for the LG V10, but don't get too excited. You're not getting a new version of Android. In fact, the update only contains WiFi Calling. It's one of the few Android devices to feature WiFi Calling on AT&T, so that's a bonus for V10 owners.

The update has a software version of H90021v and is 368MB. If you want to download it, head to Settings > General > About phone> Update Center > Software Update > Update Now. Let us know when you get it!

Google to start ranking sites lower if they use intrusive pop ups

Posted: 23 Aug 2016 04:10 PM PDT

Google ranks sites based on hundreds of signals like how useful they are, how safe they are, and more. Google has also been working hard to push for more useful sites, ranking sites lower if they don't have mobile sites.

Google's next step is to change rankings based on intrusive pop-up ads. Starting January 10, 2017, Google will rank sites lower if they have intrusive pop-ups that degrade the user experience. This doesn't include those that warn about cookies, ask for your age, or cover only part of the screen. The rules are open to interpretation.

Overall, this is a good move by Google to make the user experience better on mobile. I don't think anyone likes pop-up ads, though ads are an integral part of many sites. Hopefully this will encourage sites to improve their ad experience, though since this is only one of hundreds of signals, this may not affect big sites.

Chase to start supporting Android Pay on Sept. 7

Posted: 23 Aug 2016 03:20 PM PDT

Though many banks now support Android Pay, Chase has not offered any support for its cards in the mobile payment app, meaning that those with Chase cards have been left out. Thankfully, that's about to change.

Chase Android PayWe knew that chase would eventually support Android Pay, but thanks to this leaked document, we have a date on which it'll happen. Support will begin on Sept. 7 for Visa-branded Chase credit cards and debit cards.

If you haven't given Android Pay a shot due to a lack of support from Chase, we definitely recommend it. With Walgreens loyalty card support, it's even easier to pay with just one or two taps.

Drive app update ends support for ICS, adds in-app storage upgrades, and more

Posted: 23 Aug 2016 02:24 PM PDT

nexus2cee_Drive_thumb.pngThere's a new version of Drive rolling out, and it's the last one for users of ICS. It's been a good run, but it may be time to give your Android 4.0 device the boot now that there will be no further Drive app updates. I mean, there were dozens of reasons to do that before, but surely this is the final straw. In addition to ending support for ICS, you'll be able to give Google money for more storage from the app and never miss a document comment again.

Sony outlines Android 7.0 Nougat update plans for Xperia devices

Posted: 23 Aug 2016 02:20 PM PDT

Now that the Android 7.0 Nougat update has begun rolling out, manufacturers like Sony can start laying the groundwork to update their own devices. And letting customers in on the plans at the same time.

Sony has revealed which of its Xperia devices will be receive an update to Android 7.0 Nougat. Devices like the Xperia X Performance and Xperia XA Ultra make the cut, unsurprisingly, as does the Xperia Z3+ and Xperia Z5. Here's the full list:

  • Xperia Z3+
  • Xperia Z4 Tablet
  • Xperia Z5
  • Xperia Z5 Compact
  • Xperia Z5 Premium
  • Xperia X
  • Xperia XA
  • Xperia XA Ultra
  • Xperia X Performance

While Sony is sharing the list of devices that will be getting upgraded to Android 7.0 Nougat, the company isn't announcing a release timetable yet, so we don't know when these updates will arrive. Sony does say it's "really excited" about the new software, but doesn't go into any detail regarding what changes it might be adding to its devices.

Still, if you have one of Sony's Xperia-branded smartphones that will be getting updated, it's good to hear Android 7.0 Nougat is on the way.

Pokémon Go updated to v0.35.0 with 'Pokémon appraisals' and not much else

Posted: 23 Aug 2016 11:33 AM PDT

appraisals

How good are your Pokémon? Would you like an appraisal by an expert? Well, we don't have any of those. The best you'll get are some vague statements about stats from your virtual team leader in the new Pokémon Go update. Niantic totally promises it's working on more things, though.

Here's the changelog for the latest Pokémon Go update.

  • Implemented Pokémon Appraisal: Trainers will now be able to learn about a Pokémon's attack and defense capabilities from their Team Leader (Candela, Blanche or Spark) to determine which of their Pokémon have the most potential for battle.

Opera VPN now available on Android, completely free and blocks ad tracking

Access-content-with-free-VPN-for-Android-Opera-VPN

Back in April, Opera introduced a free VPN integrated into the desktop Opera browser. That feature arrived in the Opera developer channel just a month after they acquired SurfEasy, a Toronto-based company that created easy-to-use VPN applications. A standalone Opera VPN application was released on iOS in May, and now it's available for Android devices.

Opera VPN is notable because just like the VPN in the Opera browsers, it is completely free. You can choose between a number of countries including USA, Canada, Germany, Singapore, and The Netherlands (with more countries coming soon).

Nike

I've never been much of a runner, so I've only taken my phone with me for a lap around the neighborhood a handful of times. When I did, it felt Runtastic. But the Nike+ Running app has been another option for people looking to set goals and track their progress.

Nike is taking a new step forward and rebranding the app as part of the jump to version 2.0. The Play Store listing has changed to Nike+ Run Club, and a redesign is accompanying the transition.

Google’s Daydream VR platform reportedly launching soon

Posted: 23 Aug 2016 11:10 AM PDT

Back at the I/O developers conference, Google officially announced its new virtual reality (VR) platform, Daydream, which will see a huge focus on the technology moving forward. Since then, we've learned that Google plans on launching its own Daydream-ready VR headset, which will put it in direct competition to other companies looking to launch their own headsets in the future. And we've learned that current Android handsets probably won't be Daydream-ready whenever it launches.

Thanks to Bloomberg, we may have an idea when Daydream will launch. The publication has been told by unnamed sources that Daydream will launch "in the coming weeks" and that Google is working with a variety of partners, like Hulu and YouTube star Justine Ezarik, to create Daydream-specific projects to promote the platform. Google is also allegedly teaming up with sports leagues and producers of video games to bring even more content to the platform.

The report adds that Google is investing quite a bit in these projects, reportedly dropping hundreds of thousands of dollars for some of them.

Google publishes Android 7.0 Nougat factory images

Posted: 23 Aug 2016 11:10 AM PDT

Google made some big changes to the way it handled Android 7.0 Nougat, including letting developers in on the fun much sooner than normal, letting Android fans have a crack at naming the update, and now releasing the factory images for that software a bit later than usual.

Yesterday Google officially began rolling out Android 7.0 Nougat to select devices. It's an over-the-air (OTA) update, so not every eligible device out in the wild will receive the new software immediately. That's where factory images come in.

Now Google has started to release those factory images. To start, the Android 7.0 factory images are available for the Nexus 9 (Wi-Fi), the Nexus Player, and Google's Pixel C tablet. It's a bit of a bummer that the newer Nexus smartphones aren't a part in the first wave of factory images, but it probably won't take long before they're available.

For those who want to use the command line to upgrade and bypass the standard OTA update process, the factory images make that measurably easier. You'll wipe your device when you flash a factory image, though, so do be aware of that.

Have you updated to Android 7.0 Nougat yet?

Lenovo partners with Microsoft to preload Office, OneDrive, and Skype on future devices

Posted: 23 Aug 2016 10:33 AM PDT

Lenovo

Microsoft is taking Android seriously, and that means more than sticking quality apps on Google Play. The tech giant is partnering with whomever it can to make its software the first you see when you power on your phone. Lenovo is the latest Android manufacturer to agree.

The partnership includes a patent cross-licensing agreement that includes Lenovo and Motorola devices. Presumably part of the price for access to Microsoft patents includes getting the latter's apps in front of more faces.

OnePlus is teasing ‘something special’ for August 25

Posted: 23 Aug 2016 10:06 AM PDT

OnePlus launched its latest flagship, the OnePlus 3, not too long ago, but apparently the company is once again on the brink of unveiling something new. Today they've turned on the hype machine to make sure all eyes are on deck when the big reveal arrives.

OnePlus will announce "something special" on August 25. However, what OnePlus has in store for all of us remains to be seen. The teaser video is only 28 seconds long, and while it's obvious there's a vinyl record spinning, that doesn't really tell us anything specific. There does appear to be an earbud in the middle of the image, and we can clearly see "V2″ in the center. The safest bet at this point is that OnePlus is teasing new Icon earbuds.

It's possible OnePlus is garnering up a lot of attention just for some earbuds. If that is indeed the case, we'll have to hope they're worth the attention when OnePlus unveils them in just a couple of days.

Google Assistant can answer your voice messages in Allo

Posted: 23 Aug 2016 03:38 AM PDT

google-assistant-voice-messages

We've covered a lot of what Google Allo can do as a messaging application, but we haven't yet scratched the surface of one of its most interesting features: Assistant. It lives as a standalone chat, but also as a bot ready to answer any question inside your other conversations (not the Incognito ones though, as we've said before) by just mentioning @google.

Since Assistant is an evolution of Google Now / OK Google commands, and since Allo can send voice messages, there's a nifty feature you can easily deduce from the combination of the two: Assistant will interpret your voice messages in Allo. It's as cool as you might guess.
