YouTube is getting a new UI and animation for video description and actions

Posted: 25 Aug 2016 03:13 PM PDT

yt

It would appear that Google is rolling out yet another tweak to the YouTube app's interface. This time, there's a new layout and a slick animation when you expand the video description. This is also where you'll find most of the video actions now.

You can see above the two states of the new UI. On the left, everything is collapsed. Tap the down arrow there, and the description expands along with larger buttons for thumbs up/down, share, save, and add to list.

OnePlus announces second version of its Bullets earphones, coming soon

Posted: 25 Aug 2016 02:45 PM PDT

OnePlus has been teasing a new announcement, one thought to be for new earphones. Today was the day of the announcement, and it was indeed a set of earphones called the Bullets V2.

The landing page for the Bullets V2 goes in depth about every single feature, from the 9mm drivers made with a partnership with LOFO, 2 gram ear chambers and flat cables. The in-line remote has three buttons and a microphone and is made for controlling Android devices.

The earphones will come in black and white, though the white is mostly gold. There is no availability date or price listed, so all we have to go on is "coming soon." But since OnePlus is a budget brand, we can't imagine they'll be too expensive. Are you guys excited for these? Leave a comment!

Samsung bringing back Action Memo for the Galaxy Note 7 next month

Posted: 25 Aug 2016 02:20 PM PDT

For those who picked up a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 recently,  you might have realized that one of the most useful S Pen features is gone. Action Memo let you do things like write phone numbers and immediately use them, take snippets of the screen as notes, and more.

If you check out the Play Store listing for the Samsung Notes app, almost half of the reviews are negative due to missing features, and they have a point. Samsung released a new device without the features of the old device, making the S Pen a lot less useful.

Thankfully, Samsung has responded to these criticisms. Action Memo will return in an update to Samsung Notes that'll roll out before late September. So rest easy and give it a month, because your Note 7 will soon be just as useful as previous models.

Thanks Bart!

Xperia XZ and X Compact appear on Sony site, X Compact render leaks

Posted: 25 Aug 2016 02:20 PM PDT

Sony used to have a line of devices that were true mini flagships. The Compact line was a version of the flagship with a smaller, lower-resolution screen, but Sony mostly kept to high-end specs despite the size. This is where every other mini "flagship" fails: they use mid-range or even low-end specs.

Thankfully, the series might be making a comeback. Sony's Czech site popped up the names of the Xperia X Compact and the Xperia XZ, though no info was given. And as another bonus, a render of the Xperia X Compact has been leaked.

Sony Xperia X Compact leak

There were no details given about either phone, but seeing the return of the Compact series is definitely great. Not everyone wants a huge phone, so having small high-end phones is pretty important. However, we'll have to wait to find out more about these devices. Is anyone looking forward to the next Compact device from Sony?

Google's useless Device Assist app is shutting down

Posted: 25 Aug 2016 01:58 PM PDT

da

If you are one of the small number of people who use Google's Device Assist app, I have some bad news. Support for the app is being dropped effective immediately. Users are being notified of the app's demise via a "detected issue" card that directs them to Google's online tips site instead.

Google launched the Device Assist app in late 2014 to offer troubleshooting tips on Nexus and Android One devices. It was never particularly helpful, though it was good for a laugh when it recommended device restarts while stock Android still lacks a reboot option.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 now official in China with 4100mAh battery, 13MP camera

Posted: 25 Aug 2016 10:05 AM PDT

Xiaomi is back at it again with a brand new device in its Redmi Note lineup, officially announcing the Redmi Note 4 for the Chinese market.

The Redmi Note 4 shares plenty of similarities with the Redmi Note 3 before it, as far as specifications are concerned, but the changes in design are probably going to catch quite a few eyes. As far as those specs go, the Redmi Note 4 boasts a deca-core Helio X20 processor under the hood and a 5.5-inch full HD 2.5D display.

The Redmi Note 4 boasts a 13-megapixel camera on the back, which features a f/2.0 aperture, PDAF, and dual-LED flash. The new handset also includes dual-SIM support thanks to a slot that can also be used for a single SIM and a microSD card, and a battery that measures in at 4100mAh.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4

There are two variants of the Redmi Note 4. One offers 2GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage for CNY 899 (about $135), and the other boasts 3GB of RAM and 64GB of built-in storage for CNY 1199 (around $180). Both variants will be available in China beginning Friday, August 26.

What do you think of the new Redmi Note 4 from Xiaomi?

Google Duo surpasses 5 million downloads on Android

Posted: 25 Aug 2016 09:07 AM PDT

Google officially debuted its video calling app, Duo, back at Google I/O conference earlier this year. And last week, Duo was officially released for Android and iOS users. Now Google CEO Sundar Pichai has some good news about the app to share.

Pichai tweeted out late last night that, after a week of availability, Duo has surpassed five million downloads on Android alone. Duo became the top free app in the Play Store just days after it was released, so perhaps its skyrocketing numbers are not that big of a surprise. Still, passing five million downloads in a week's time is surely impressive.

Have you downloaded and tried out Duo yet? If so, what are your thoughts about Google's new video calling app?

Samsung Galaxy S7, S7 edge heading to the U.S. in Pink Gold

Posted: 25 Aug 2016 09:07 AM PDT

In April of this year, Samsung officially debuted the fifth color option for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge: Pink Gold. Unfortunately for anyone who wanted to get their hands on that particular shade in the United States, they were out of luck, but soon that'll no longer be the case.

Samsung will launch the Pink Gold Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge on Sunday, August 28. The device will be unlocked, so it will work with AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon. The one caveat here is that it will be available exclusively from Best Buy.

Samsung hasn't announced any printing info just yet, but expectations are that it will cost the same as other unlocked Galaxy S7/S7 edge variants, so around $620 for the 32GB Galaxy S7 and $750 for the 32GB Galaxy S7 edge. Best Buy is throwing in a $150 gift card with the purchase and activation of a Pink Gold variant, though.

What do you think of the Pink Gold Galaxy S7 and S7 edge?

I still remember getting my HTC Desire Z, rooting it and installing a cleaner custom ROM, then instantly looking for a decent music player on the Play Store that could handle music synchronization from iTunes. After days of research, I settled on PlayerPro and iSyncr, which would let me sync specific playlists from my iMac to my phone along with all the ID3 tags and metadata, even the lyrics and album art.

  • Well, that "coming later" part didn't require a long wait, did it? The game has been updated now to work on phones and tablets too, not just SHIELD TV. The Play

imageVector Unit has cultivated a reputation as one of the most consistently solid developers on Android, so a new release from them is always a good thing. But when it's a new entry in the Riptide GP series, then it's time to call the boss and tell him you're (cough, cough) "sick." Riptide GP: Renegade is the third installment, and SHIELD Android TV owners can play it right now, only a few days after the PC and console release.

whatsapp-free

WhatsApp today has updated its Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for the first time in four years, to reflect changes made in the app since that time. Perhaps the most important changes regard information sharing with Facebook and the 'Facebook family of companies,' and updates concerning WhatsApp Calling, which launched over a year ago now.

The changes regarding Facebook mean that some information on a WhatsApp account can be shared with Facebook to help improve the company's products and services.

SwiftKey Beta returns phone and email predictions, adds Android Nougat emojis

Posted: 25 Aug 2016 04:08 AM PDT

swiftkey-nougat-emoji

SwiftKey hit a rough patch in the last month. A bug with suggestions was causing some criss-cross of information between accounts, giving email addresses and phone numbers as suggestions to users who had never entered them. That lead the developers to stop all synchronization in the app then roll out a temporary fix that reinstated the busted sync but only for regular words, not emails and numbers.

Now the final fix is quasi ready.

GIF support in WhatsApp is coming soon. I know it, you know it, we all know it's already baked into the Android app (only requiring a small switch from a root-only app to enable it) and there's even a WhatsApp Animated GIFs folder inside the WhatsApp directory on your local phone's storage that's just taunting us hard. But for those of us who don't want to root our devices or install unofficial hacks, there's light on the horizon.

PayPal's Android application has had fingerprint support for a while, but it was limited to some Samsung Galaxy models (ie based on Samsung's Fingerprint SDK, which was released way before Marshmallow). But the app is now getting proper fingerprint login support on Android with Nexus Imprint.

In version 6.5.1 of the app, there's a new Fingerprint option under Login and Security that lets you use any fingerprint stored on your phone to log into your PayPal account, without having to input your username and password each and every time.

Google's Duo video calling application has been out for about a week now. It was released on August 16, but it took 2 days to propagate globally. That's also how long it needed to make its way to the top of the free new apps on the Play Store.

With one week under its belt from worldwide release, Duo is celebrating another milestone: over 5 million downloads on Android. Sundar Pichai made the announcement on Twitter:

Samsung Cloud Together lets you manage and password protect your photos on Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, and local storage

Samsung is slowly rolling out a new app meant to centralize your photo management. For those using storage with multiple cloud services, Samsung Cloud Together might be a good option for dealing with the mess. And even if you have a well-organized setup, the app also includes a security feature that allows you to password protect selected photos.

The overall concept isn't too far-fetched: You probably have media scattered across more than one place and this app can facilitate easier browsing.

HTC announces Android 7.0 Nougat update timeline for a few devices

Posted: 24 Aug 2016 05:10 PM PDT

Now that the official build of Android 7.0 Nougat is out, phone makers are receiving the latest code to start working on the final builds of Nougat for their devices.

HTC has taken to Twitter to confirm that the unlocked HTC 10 will be getting the update in Q4 2016. This means it could come in a few weeks or in more than three months. It's quite the range. The One M9 and One A9 as well as carrier versions of all of these devices will follow.

Unfortunately, HTC hasn't given any concrete dates, nor has the company mentioned any other older or lower end devices. Hopefully HTC expands on its plans after the 10 is on the latest version of Android.
