Pokémon GO updated to v0.33 with Poké Ball XP fix, new driving warning, and more (but still no tracking) [APK Download]

Posted: 08 Aug 2016 03:02 PM PDT

nexus2cee_pokemon-go_thumb.pngPokémon trainers around the world have been peeved with Niantic and the sluggish rate of Pokémon GO updates. Today, there's a new version rolling out with a number of tweaks and fixes, but unfortunately, the recently removed tracking feature is not among them. You'll get the right XP bonuses from Poké Balls assuming you can find any Pokémon, though.

Here's the full changelog for Pokémon GO v0.33.

  • Added a dialog to remind Trainers that they should not play while traveling above a certain speed; Trainers will have to indicate they aren't the driver
  • Fixed a bug that prevented "Nice," "Great," and "Excellent" Poké Ball throws from awarding the appropriate XP bonuses
  • Enabled the ability for Trainers to change their nickname one time, so please choose your new nickname wisely
  • Resolved issues with the battery saver mode on iOS and re-enabled the feature ಠ_ಠ
  • Other fixes

So, it appears that Pokémon GO will now pop up a warning when you're moving at a certain speed, indicating that you're in a car.

Best Buy hosts sales on Amazon Echo, Fire TV and Fire TV Stick

Posted: 08 Aug 2016 02:13 PM PDT

While Amazon is best known as the go-to shopping website, the company also manufacturers a surprising amount of products, some of which are sold at other retailers as well. Best Buy is one of those retailers and the company is currently holding a sale on select Amazon items. The notable three include the Amazon Echo, Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, all of which are discounted to rates well below their usual ones.

  • Amazon's voice-controlled Echo speaker is down to $129.99, $50 off of the regular price of $179.99.
  • Amazon's Fire TV set-top box is discounted to $69.99, down $30 from the regular price of $99.99.
  • No need for the entire box? The Amazon Fire TV Stick offers some of the best features of the Fire TV in a smaller package at a smaller price of just $24.99, which is $15 lower than the regular price of $39.99.

There's no indicator as to how long these sales will last, so if you're interested, it would be wise to act sooner rather than later. We haven't heard much word on upcoming new models of any of these devices, so you should be reasonably safe while purchasing.

There are a few more details lurking around Best Buy's site, so feel free to poke around and see if anything else catches your eye.

SwiftKey v6.3.9.79 update rolling out with fix for busted sync

Posted: 08 Aug 2016 01:15 PM PDT

sk sync

SwiftKey disabled account sync in its keyboard late last month after a bizarre error caused predictions to be sent to the wrong users. It said an update was in the works to fix it, and now it's rolling out. SwiftKey v6.3.9.79 will re-enable sync on your device, hopefully without all the crossed wires.

SwiftKey, which was recently acquired by Microsoft, was initially vague about the cause of the sync outage. It emerged later that the company manually turned sync off because of the incorrect predictions.

HTC woos potential HTC 10 buyers with free JBL earbuds

Posted: 08 Aug 2016 01:01 PM PDT

For HTC, the task of winning back its spot is far from over. The company has floundered in recent times, searching to recapture the interest of customers. HTC has restructured itself, trimmed off the fat and focused on distinctive features in an effort to grow its customer base. But even with positive reviews for the company's latest flagship, the HTC 10, there's still more that remains to be done.

In a new effort to sway potential customers, HTC has begun offering perks for those who purchase the HTC 10. In a gesture of goodwill, HTC is offering noise-cancelling JBL earbuds for customers who purchase the HTC 10 from its website. The earbuds, a $200 value, are part of the company's work to satisfy customers who were unimpressed by HTC's move away from superior audio with the HTC 10. The flagship smartphone ditched the iconic stereo speakers that its predecessors had, turning some enthusiasts away.

In addition to the earbuds, HTC is also offering $100 in credit towards accessories on HTC.com, no matter where you purchase the phone. While these offers provide extra incentive for potential customers, the fact still remains that HTC needs to rebuild its name in the market. In a world dominated by Apple and Samsung, it's going to take a great deal of work on HTC's part to regain the traction that it's lost.

Sony marches on with leaked renders of the Xperia XR

Posted: 08 Aug 2016 09:19 AM PDT

There's no doubt that Sony has struggled in the smartphone market. While the company has maintained a presence in other regions, Sony has all but vanished in the U.S. smartphone market. Despite its losses, the company continues to move forward in creating new smartphones. Coming soon is the Sony F833X, or what may hit the market as the Xperia XR. As the company's next flagship, the Xperia XR has a lot to live up to.

Take a look at the leaked renders of the device. While not the official device itself, these renders are sourced from @onleaks, a reputable leaker who has a knack for acquiring the schematics of smartphones. The color itself is a wild card, but the rest of the design is likely to be much the same on the official model.

Sony Xperia X8 (2)

The display will likely be around five inches, and previous leaks have pointed to a dual-LED flash and a USB Type-C charging port. Additionally, we can see classic Sony design elements such as heavy bezels and a dedicated camera button. It's hard to say what the rear build material is comprised of. Traditionally, Sony has used strengthened glass for a stunning look on the backs of its devices. This render, however, looks like the Xperia XR could be using a plastic or polycarbonate build. Without more details, we'll have to wait until the official model to see what the device really looks like.

Does the Xperia XR pique your interest? Or has Sony fallen out of your good graces?

Pokémon GO passes 100 million Play Store downloads in just a month

Posted: 08 Aug 2016 04:18 AM PDT

100Holy crap, you people really like playing Pokémon. A combination of nostalgia, interesting augmented reality gameplay, straight-up social novelty, and (not least) being a free game has made Niantic's Pokémon GO rocket to 100 million downloads in the Play Store in just a month. Life isn't a race, but if it was, Pokémon GO would be so far ahead of every other game that they'd see it disappearing beneath the horizon.
