T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge updated with latest security patches

Posted: 27 Sep 2016 03:04 PM PDT

If you own the T-Mobile model of the Samsung Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge, expect to see a new update notification soon, because T-Mobile is updating both devices.

The biggest part is the inclusion of the September security patches, which is very important. T-Mobile's changelog has a a "time/date update" and various system improvements. The update screen on the device mentions new Samsung Cloud features as well.

Before the update, make sure you're on WiFi (unless you're rocking unlimited data) and have a good amount of charge. Head to Settings > About device and check for new updates!

Motorola announces Q4 Nougat update for Moto Z devices and Moto G4

Posted: 27 Sep 2016 02:03 PM PDT

Motorola has announced its update plans for a few of its newest devices. The Moto Z, Moto Z Force, Moto Z Play, Moto G4, and Moto G4 Plus are all set to get the latest version of Android in Q4 2016.

The fourth quarter starts in just a few days, but it's likely we'll be seeing the update come later in the quarter. The devices will be getting Nougat before the end of the year, though, which is pretty quick all things considered. Motorola does have the benefit of near stock Android to shorten update times.

Other Motorola devices weren't lucky enough to get update schedules, so owners of the Moto X Pure Edition and other older devices won't know when the update is coming for a while. But Motorola claims that many older devices will get the update, so hang in there.

Chrome for Android is getting more personal as it aims to reduce data usage

Posted: 27 Sep 2016 12:08 PM PDT

Google is rolling out some big changes for Chrome on Android, aiming to not only make the experience a more personalized one, but also help to save data usage and make the downloads experience a bit easier as well.

Google officially announced the changes today, which includes a more personalized experience based on browsing history. When a user opens a new tab, Chrome for Android will show "Articles for You," which will show content that Chrome believes you'll be interested in. That will include news regarding your favorite sports teams and content from your most-visted sites. And of course, the more you use Chrome for Android the smarter those suggestions will get.

The other noteworthy part of the update is the improvements being brought to Data Saver. For those who aren't up-to-date on the feature, it compresses pictures and text that you load in the browser. With the update, however, Data Saver will now compress video content, too. If you watch MP4 videos in Chrome for Android, Google says it will help users save upwards of 67 percent of their data.

Chrome Android downloads

Finally, Google is also improving the downloads experience. You'll be able to save a picture, video, website, or even music just by tapping the download button. There's a new Downloads section that will populate all of the content you've saved, letting you take a look at it later.

The new Downloads feature is available in the current Beta of Chrome for Android, and it will roll out to all Chrome users "soon."

It's published by Yodo1 (like Crossy Road), and I'll give you one guess what it's about.

Google announces the offline-friendly YouTube Go in India

Posted: 27 Sep 2016 10:03 AM PDT

The YouTube team would like it if even more people were watching YouTube videos, and they're working to make that happen, even in areas where network access might not be readily available or stable.

That's why YouTube Go, the new offline-friendly app from the YouTube team, makes so much sense. The new app is currently in testing India, and it's designed to not only be a personal experience with video recommendations, but also work even when there's low or no connectivity. The app also provides transparency, so you can see how much data you're using and even dictate how much you're willing to use while watching videos.

Here are the new features baked into YouTube Go:

  • Find and discover relatable videos right on the home screen: YouTube Go homescreen features trending and popular videos in your area, so that you'll find and fall in love with new videos that you and your community care about.
  • Preview videos before you save or watch: Not sure if you want to watch the video? On YouTube Go when you tap on a thumbnail, it'll trigger a quick preview of the video, giving you a better sense of what the video is about before you decide to save or play it.
  • Choose your resolution when saving or streaming videos: Whether you'd like to save a video for offline viewing later, or stream it now, you can see and choose the amount of data you'd like to spend on that video.
  • Share videos with friends nearby: Share videos with friends and family nearby without using any data. You can send and receive videos instantly and offline with others using the YouTube Go app.

YouTube Go is being gradually rolled out in India right now, and will continue to do so over the next few months. A "wide release" is planned for early 2017, but there's no indication if that means a wide release in India or in other regions across the globe.

Xiaomi has a pair of brand new smartphones, having just unveiled both the Mi 5s and the Mi 5s Plus, both of which are outfitted with high-end specs.

The latter model will also feature a pressure-sensitive display.

The Mi 5s features an "ultrasonic" fingerprint reader, which Xiaomi says will work even if your finger is dirty or sweaty. The front-facing camera is a 4MP shooter with an 80-degree wide-angle lens, and the battery is measured in at 3200mAh. Finally, it boasts NFC and dual-SIM support.

Universal Studios Hollywood gets an Android app, more than 2 years after the Orlando theme park

Posted: 27 Sep 2016 08:31 AM PDT

Resorts and theme parks are one of the few touristic attractions I'd go to where I'd have the dedicated app installed and at the ready a few days before even visiting. I'd check out the map, see the different rides, and pick beforehand my musts and maybes so I don't have any regrets by the end of the day.

But if I were to visit Universal Studios Hollywood prior to today, like David did this Sunday, I would have no such luck (#DavidsLuck).

WhatsApp's public group links have been rumored for months and we've even been able to join public groups since June, but unless you had modified the app thanks to some root-only shenanigans, you couldn't issue links to any groups just yet.

Now the feature is live in version 2.16.281 of the app, which is still in beta. If you're the admin of a WhatsApp group, when you go to add a new participant to your chat, you will have a new Invite to group via link option at the top of your contacts list.

YouTube Go is a data-friendly version of YouTube, rolling out gradually in India

Posted: 27 Sep 2016 02:08 AM PDT

youtube-go-icon

The YouTube team has been making lots of efforts over the past couple of years to bring its service and millions of videos to more users worldwide. This involves those who have access to fast internet connections and plenty of data, but also those who have very little data bandwidth and are still limited to 2G or congested 3G. Video, by default, doesn't fit well with the latter, but through conscious efforts like YouTube Accelerator and YouTube Offline, it can reach more of those devices and people who would seemingly be off-limits.

New Google Pixel image leaks out

Posted: 26 Sep 2016 10:13 PM PDT

Thanks to leaked images, we've already seen what is believed to be the Pixel phones out in the wild. But, leading up to the big October 4 reveal, the Rumor Mill isn't giving up just yet.

And here we are with another image of the Pixel, in what appears to be a press render ahead of its launch later this year. The image was shared by VentureBeat and only shows the front of the upcoming device. This is the Pixel we're looking at here, but with expectations that the Pixel and Pixel XL (the larger of the two new handsets) will look similar, this is probably what the front of the Pixel XL will look like, too.

We're looking at all the normal things here. A sensor, front-facing camera, earpiece, and on the side all the traditional Power/Lock and Volume keys. We can also see the new Pixel launcher in place, too, including the app dock at the bottom of the display, along with the Google "G" slider at the top. That new date/time widget is in place, too.

The circular app icons are right there, front and center.

Are you getting excited for the Pixel smartphones?
