Google Allo, the second of Google's two new messaging apps, has just hit five million downloads in the Google Play Store. All the anticipation for Allo (let's forget about the subsequent letdown for now) has made its download numbers soar. However, the aforementioned letdown is quite apparent in its current ranking in the Play Store; while Allo sat at #1 in Top Charts just five days ago, it's since fallen to #8.

T-Mobile offering free unlimited LTE data in South America and Europe until 2017

Posted: 28 Sep 2016 11:03 AM PDT

T-Mobile, the nation's third largest wireless carrier, has announced that it will offer unlimited high-speed data in South America and 19 European countries until 2017 at no extra cost to its customers. The move comes as part of the carrier's "Endless Summer" promotion, the latest in its series of moves designed to appease and entice customers. While T-Mobile's Rio Olympics data promotion is over, the company is expanding its international roaming offerings with this latest move.

Customers utilizing this promotion don't need to make any changes to their account, as it will automatically apply. The promotion includes high-speed data up to 4G LTE, so you're set to get the fastest possible connection no matter where you are. Be sure to check the list of countries at the source link before you go, as there are a couple of notable exceptions, such as France and Greece.

BlackBerry is no longer designing its own phone hardware

Posted: 28 Sep 2016 09:05 AM PDT

BlackBerry is a brand that's been around for a very, very long time, but that era is coming to an end. The company moved away from designing its own operating systems, and now it looks like hardware is going that route, too.

Today, BlackBerry CEO John Chen announced that the company has no plans to design its own phone hardware. BlackBerry will stop all internal hardware development and instead outsource that part of the process to partners. According to Chen, this means BlackBerry can "reduce capital requirements and enhance return on invested capital."

BlackBerry's focus from here on out will be software, specifically apps and security. Chen says that the company has more than doubled its software revenue year-over-year. On the other side of the coin, though, BlackBerry posted a loss in the fiscal second quarter 2017 of $372 million, a huge difference from the $66 million loss it took in the fiscal second quarter of 2016.

BlackBerry has moved away from developing its own operating systems, and instead adopted Android for its go-to platform. The company has been struggling over the last few years, especially with the rise of iOS and Android, so this move may not be all that surprising.

Spaces v1.7 adds capability to save posted images [APK Download]

Posted: 28 Sep 2016 08:36 AM PDT

spaces

As some readers might recall, there were a couple of fairly unusual, and very time-consuming teardown posts last week. In the final dash to finish them up, a few app updates were sidelined until they could be checked more thoroughly. Most of them have turned out to be bug fixes or have only small changes that don't really call for attention. The update to Google's micro-community app Spaces isn't very significant either, but it does resolve one of the most common complaints in the app since its release: it's now possible to save images posted to a space.

Firefox Aurora arrives on the Play Store in "unreleased" state

Posted: 28 Sep 2016 04:49 AM PDT

For a couple of years, Firefox Aurora, the developer edition of the popular browser, has only been available directly from Mozilla. As of today, Aurora has landed on the Play Store, in early access (i.e. unreleased) form. This is presumably because it's unstable and not meant to be used by the general public, and only by those interested in what's coming soon or building the web. Regardless, it is always good to see things in development that will later be deployed to the public version of Firefox, which is currently on v49.

Fitbit starts vibrating to remind you to move and allowing third-party notifications on its trackers

Posted: 28 Sep 2016 04:39 AM PDT

fitbit-blaze-firmware-update

When I reviewed the Fitbit Blaze a couple of months ago, some of my gripes with the tracker were more related to the software than the hardware side. I didn't like the limited choice of watch faces and I was annoyed that I couldn't set notifications for emails and third-party apps natively (I know about Fit Notifications), which made the Blaze quasi-useless as a smartwatch replacement on my wrist. But most importantly, even though the app could track my hourly activity and longest sitting times and send me reminders to move, the tracker itself never vibrated which made the reminder approach very inefficient.

Google Pixel And Pixel XL Press Render Leaked

oct_4

We've been hearing about Google's upcoming smartphone lineup since the middle of the year and while renders for the phone have leaked over and over again, we still haven't seen the official press render until now.

pixel_evleaks

Our our friendly neighborhood leak-ster Evan Blass has acquired press renders for not only the Pixel but the larger Pixel XL as well. The Pixel (pictured above) is set to feature Android 7.1 Nougat and in this picture we can clearly see the new launcher icons and navigation buttons.

pixelxl_evleaks

The Pixel XL also features the same Pixel launcher and new navigation buttons but it is noticeably larger.

Specs for the Pixel include a 5-inch 1080p display, Snapdragon 820/821 SoC, 4GB of RAM, 12MP rear and 8MP front camera, 32GB of internal storage and a 2770 mAh battery. The Pixel XL will come with almost identical specs with the only differentiating factor being the 5.5-inch QHD display and 3450mAh battery.

The phones are expected to be announced on October 4th.

Five years - that's how long Indians have had to wait for Google Play Music to come to their country. However, it appears that the massive delay may finally be over. Several India-based AP readers have tipped us that Play Music is now showing up on their devices with songs available for purchase. This news comes just a day after Google's big announcement regarding the Indian market.

Ubisoft acquires casual mobile game publisher Ketchapp

Posted: 27 Sep 2016 07:13 PM PDT

ketchappEven if you're a regular gamer, you might not know about Ketchapp. The publisher is only a couple of years old, and the games it posts to the Play Store and App Store are uniformly small, simple titles. But what it lacks in ambition it makes up for in volume: by my count there are no less than 75 Ketchapp games on the Play Store, an impressive accomplishment in a short amount of time.

Shazam adds "Auto Shazam" custom tile for Android 7.0 Nougat's Quick Settings

Posted: 27 Sep 2016 07:04 PM PDT

screenshot_20160927-201717-2

We first saw custom tiles in an Android N Developer Preview a few months back, but unfortunately, not many apps have added this feature. It's a shame, really; custom tiles are easy to use and can add a lot of speed and functionality to frequently-used apps. Now, Shazam has added one called "Auto Shazam", and it might come in handy if you're a big music listener. I don't personally use Shazam anymore (Google does the same thing if you start a voice search, FYI), but I can certainly see the merits of this for people who are invested in it.

Lenovo lays off huge amount of Motorola employees

Posted: 27 Sep 2016 06:03 PM PDT

Lenovo has announced that it laying off "less than two percent of its approximately 55,000 employees globally," all from Motorola. Unfortunately, his is only a part of the layoffs Lenovo has been enacting recently.

Many Motorola employees are being laid off from the Chicago office, potentially over half of the employees there, but Lenovo claims that the Motorola Chicago headquarters will remain.

It's really unfortunate to see what Lenovo is doing to a once iconic company. The parent company hasn't exactly managed Motorola's transition well, though some of the blame is on Google. We're hoping the company survives this ordeal, at least to an extent.

[You're on Android, Harry] LEGO Harry Potter games now available for Android

Posted: 27 Sep 2016 05:54 PM PDT

legopotter

Many years ago, my first game console was a Nintendo DS Lite. And one of the first games I got for it was LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga. It still remains one of my favorite games of all time, mostly because of nostalgia to that red and black handheld, but also because the LEGO video games are incredibly fun and engaging (for all ages).

LEGO Harry Potter was originally released in 2010 for Windows, various game consoles, and iOS, followed by a Mac release a year later.

Google Maps v9.38 adds a dedicated album for food photos and an upcoming events tab for your places [APK Download]

Posted: 27 Sep 2016 04:39 PM PDT

maps

Google set loose a new beta release of Maps, taking it up to v9.38. This release doesn't seem to have quite as many huge features as some of the last few, but there are still a couple of cool additions. There's a new tab with a list of upcoming events, bookings, and reservations. The dedicated album for food photos from a recent teardown is now also live. There are almost always a few other hidden gems in each release, so keep an eye out for more changes and let us know if you see anything else.
