Chrome for Android 53 now supports Android Pay

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 04:08 PM PDT

Google Chrome for Android is currently being updated to version 53, and it brings a few cool features to the mainstream. The first is Android Pay support, which allows you to pay for things without filling out forms or grabbing your wallet. Now all you'll need to do is press a button.

Other new features include a Bluetooth API, which will allow sites to use Bluetooth to communicate with devices. Chrome will also now autoplay HTML videos on mute rather than not starting them automatically, which will make loading GIFV files easier (and allow us to forget the pain of GIFs).

The update should come to your device soon, so check the Play Store for new updates! But if you want it now, hit the source link.

HP TouchPad gets unofficial alpha Nougat ROM

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 03:11 PM PDT

There are some devices that are unstoppable despite their age. We don't know why, but some devices are so revered by the ROM community that they get incredible amounts of attention and devotion. We had the HTC HD2, and now we have the HP TouchPad.

The TouchPad launched back in 2011 with WebOS, a now long gone operating system that many of us loved and wished had succeeded. If you've never used it, we suggest you find a way to give it a go. But with the app store shut down, it's kind of useless, so modders got to putting Android on the tablet.

Today we're seeing the first Android 7.0 Nougat ROM for the device. It's in alpha and a lot of stuff isn't working, but the fact that it's even available is amazing. Hopefully a lot of the bugs are worked out, as previous builds of Android for the tablet were quite stable and functional. But if you want to give it a try, hit the source link!

Cygnett Chargeup 6,000 mAh portable power bank review

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 03:11 PM PDT

With a market flooded with power banks, it's hard to differentiate your product from others. But quality matters when it comes to lithium batteries (they're pretty volatile).

Details

Capacity: 6,000 mAh
USB ports: 2
Output: 2A per port
Dimensions: 127 x 71 x 12mm
Price: $59.99
In box: battery pack, USB cable
Where to buy: Cygnett

The Cygnett power bank is a very nicely designed accessory and is very small and thin. The whole thing is pretty simple, with softly curved edges that are pleasant to hold. The top has a gloss black area with a display on the face.

Cygnett 6000 mAh power bank 4

From the top, you'll see a microUSB port for charging the power bank, two 2 amp USB ports, and a button turn it on.

Cygnett 6000 mAh power bank 5

The device comes with a short microUSB cable that you can use to both charge the power bank and your phone. Having such a short cable is actually really nice, as you can just hold the battery behind your phone. It's a great addition, which came as a surprise to me.

There are multiple colors available, though the color of the button and stripe/text are the only things that change. There are also three solid colors to match the color of the current iPhones.

Build quality

The power bank is built extremely well. Most of it is a very pleasant soft touch plastic that doesn't bend or creak when pushed on. Each corner is very well rounded and comfortable. It feels great. The display is also very nice and bright.

Charging

The claimed capacity of this power bank is 6,000 mAh and each port puts out two amps. In my testing, this checks out. The power bank was able to fully charge my phone twice and charged at a quick rate.

Cygnett power bank graph

Both the phone charge rate (Moto X Pure Edition) and the power bank discharge rate remain constant. The device charges at 0.75% a minute, which isn't bad for a charger without Quick Charge. The claimed capacity is accurate and charged without problems.

The graph shows two sets of data, two separate days without having topped off the power bank. It fully charged my phone twice.

If you're looking for a premium power bank, Cugnett offers some compelling options (there's also a 10,000 mAh option for $79.99). The build quality and attention to detail is great and the advertised capacity is accurate (this may not always be the case with cheap batteries). Sure, it's expensive, but you get a great product for the money.

Twitter Direct Messages get read receipts and typing indicators

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 02:17 PM PDT

Twitter's Direct Messaging system always seemed like an afterthought, a way to share quick message but not converse. However, that's changed quite a bit recently with tweaks that've made Twitter Direct Messaging quite usable for chatting.

The latest update to the Direct Messages includes a bunch of features to bring them up to par with other messaging apps like Facebook Messenger. Twitter has added read receipts, typing indicators, and link previews to DMs.

If you don't like read receipts, they can be disabled in settings. For most people, though, this is a great set of features that make Twitter DMs a more viable options for chatting with friends. Twitter DMs won't be taking over the big chat apps anytime soon, but it's a step in the right direction.

Google Maps expands to include additional ride-sharing services

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 01:07 PM PDT

Google Maps has become more than a simple GPS navigation system. The service has evolved to become a one-stop shop for finding the best route from point-to-point. Whether that route is fast, toll-free, on bike, on foot, in the car or filled with stops on the way, Google Maps has you covered. A new way in which Maps is expanding is through partnerships with ride-sharing services to keep users informed on the options of transportation.

Google has been affiliated globally with Uber as well as working with certain country-specific services. Notably missing from the pack, however, was Lyft, one of Uber's biggest competitors in the U.S. With a new update, that's changing. Lyft and Lyft Line options will now be shown as ride-sharing options across the U.S. Coming alongside is Gett, which has previously been confined to the U.K. In the U.S., Gett will initially have availability only in New York City.

These new options are available in both the iOS and Android apps. Try them out for yourself and let us know what you think.

Twitter's DMs now feature read receipts and some other new things

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 01:03 PM PDT

twitter

Twitter Direct Messages has never been my preferred messaging platform, but for those who do use it, there are a few new features for you to use—read receipts, typing indicators, and web link previews. If you use other services such as Facebook Messenger, Hangouts, Telegram, and WhatsApp, you've probably already seen these.

Read receipts are those little indicators that show the sender their messages have been read by the receiver. All of the previously mentioned services utilize these, but many users hate them with a passion.

Google Play Services v9.6 adds Nearby quick settings tile

nearby

There's a new version of Google Play Services rolling out, but isn't there always? Sometimes there are notable new features, and other times not. This time, the updated version includes a nifty extra for Nougat users in the form of a new quick settings tile for Nearby.

Nearby is, of course, Google's platform for connecting devices that are in close proximity with a combination of Bluetooth and ultrasonic signals. The settings for this feature are somewhat buried in the Google menus, but now they're more easily accessible.

More Details About Upcoming Huawei Nexus/Pixel Tablet Emerge

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 11:17 AM PDT

nexus_2015

Yesterday we shared an article regarding Evan Blass's latest leak about the upcoming Google Pixel or Nexus tablet manufactured by Huawei. Even though the information given wasn't expected by anyone, it was quite limited.

However today, the site huaweiblog.de has received word from a supposed insider about what to expect in the upcoming tablet. As of now, the 7-inch screen size remains to be the same as the Nexus 7 (2012/2013) however it will sport a QHD display powered by a Snapdragon 820 (or even 821) SoC with 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage and a 13MP rear camera.

The price range and battery size are still unknown but as with every other device, those will be leaked eventually.

[Weird Issue] Chrome Beta and Dev don't show up under My Apps on the Play Store in Nougat, will need to be updated manually

If you own a Nexus device and have updated to Android Nougat, and you use Chrome Beta or Chrome Dev, you may have noticed something. Alright, maybe you didn't notice it because you don't have the eagle eye of Artem. Regardless, the issue is there and it's not a matter of #ArtemsLuck: I was able to replicate it on my Nexus 5X too.

Both Chrome Beta and Chrome Dev do not appear under My Apps in the Play Store on devices running Nougat.

[APK Download] Chrome 53 adds Android Pay support, Bluetooth API, and more

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 10:42 AM PDT

chrome53

Google Chrome 53 is making its way to Android devices, with several exciting new features for both users and developers alike. Luckily I'm both, so I get to be double excited! Let's dive into the changes.

Android Pay support

This is, at least in my opinion, the biggest new feature. Chrome 53 now supports the official PaymentRequest API developed by the W3C (the organization that creates standards for the web). This means that once websites begin to adopt it, you will be able to checkout using Android Pay instead of spending time filling out payment information for every site.

Google Maps adds Lyft and Gett to ride services tab

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 09:04 AM PDT

googlemaps-ridesharing

Back in March, Google Maps added a dedicated ride-sharing tab with comparative prices. This is extremely useful if you want to compare prices easily, and of course to see what services are available in a given area.

Today, Google is improving that feature by adding support for Lyft and Gett. Google claims Maps now displays options from "9 ride-sharing partners in over 60 countries." Google also mentions that the ride-sharing tab shows multiple types of services offered by each company.

Amazon’s Fire HD 8 brings Alexa to tablets

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 09:02 AM PDT

Amazon is continuing to branch out from its retailer roots as it creates more of its own hardware. The new Fire HD 8 tablet is another example of that, pairing an affordable price with Alexa, Amazon's voice assistant software that has previously been native only to the Echo line of speakers. While Amazon hasn't outfitted the Fire HD 8 with flagship specs, it's still capable enough to handle the usual demands of Fire tablets.

  • 8-inch 1280×800 display
  • Quad-core 1.3GHz processor
  • 1.5GB RAM
  • 16/32GB of storage plus microSD card slot
  • Front and rear-facing cameras
  • 4750mAh battery
  • Dolby stereo speakers
  • Fire OS 5
  • Amazon Alexa

The addition of Amazon's Alexa serves as a key selling point for the Fire HD 8. Amazon's voice assistant has developed rapidly, quickly becoming one of the most advanced options on the market. The company has also done a fantastic job of spreading the word about Alexa, even going so far as to feature the software in a Super Bowl commercial. With Alexa onboard, the Fire HD 8 packs another reason to purchase.

Alexa will be available on the new Fire HD 8, the Fire HD 10, Fire, and last year's Fire HD 8 via a software update that'll be released "in the coming months."

Pricing begins at just $89.99 and is available for pre-order today, with orders shipping on September 21. Four color options of black, magenta, blue, and tangerine are available.

Chase app updated with better fingerprint support, improved transaction sorting, and more

Posted: 08 Sep 2016 07:07 AM PDT

The Chase app added fingerprint login support a while back, which was great. Or rather, it could have been great. It wasn't particularly useful because many functions still required a manual login. That's no longer the case as of the latest update. Yay.

Here's the changelog for the latest update.

  • Chase QuickPay payments are now available within minutes between Chase and select banks.
  • Search, sort and filter credit card transactions.
  • Now pay or transfer funds without having to re-enter your password when you use fingerprint sign in.

Pokémon GO Plus companion accessory to be available September 16 in most countries

Posted: 07 Sep 2016 10:13 PM PDT

The Pokémon GO phenomenon might be on a decline now compared to its peak in mid-July, but that doesn't mean the game isn't still very popular. Just yesterday, it passed 500 Million downloads on the Play Store, a feat that usually takes years for any other app, even those that came from Facebook and Google. And if that isn't enough to show how popular the game is, you only have to see the new "Catching Pokémon" activity type in Google Maps that sits at the same level as running, walking, driving, and so on.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 may be banned from flights in the future

Posted: 07 Sep 2016 06:03 PM PDT

Samsung has recalled the Galaxy Note 7 for defective batteries that are at a risk of exploding or catching fire, and this may cause more problems for owners of the device than anticipated. The FAA is considering banning them from flights.

The FAA and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration are working on guidance related to this issue. If the device is recalled by the manufacturer, airline crew and passengers will not be able to bring recalled batteries or electronics that contain recalled batteries in the cabin of an aircraft, or in carry-on and checked baggage.

No decision has been made, but it's under consideration. Normally it would be banned immediately, but Samsung didn't recall the devices the proper way through the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, so it's not officially a recalled device. Samsung is handling exchanging the devices itself.

If you own one of these devices and travel a lot, be prepared for a potential ban. Hopefully you'll get a replacement device before then though, as Samsung is working on exchanging them very soon.

New mapmaker feature available for Local Guides in Google Maps

You might have received notifications from Google Maps for the last few months, asking you some information about places you've visited. For example, after I left McDonalds a few days ago Google Maps asked me if it was a "good place for parties" (I guess?). Answering those questions gets you points on Google Maps' Local Guide program, and after accumulating enough points, you can level up.

I myself am just a Level 2 'Local Guide', but Google has released new features to Level 4+ guides.
