Vine is shutting down in the next few months

Posted: 27 Oct 2016 02:16 PM PDT

Vine has been around 2013 and it has provided a slew of 7 second video loops. It's even made people famous. However, Twitter has announced that the service is being shut down in the next few months

The company isn't taking down existing videos yet, though that might change in the future. For now, you can enjoy the content that's currently on the site. But the mobile app will be discontinued, leaving only the website.

Maybe Vine wasn't so successful or didn't make Twitter enough money, but it definitely changed social media. Every other service adopted short video clips, many creators came out of the craze, and it will surely go down in history.

Samsung Mobile Posts Historic 96% Profit Decrease in Q3

Posted: 27 Oct 2016 10:03 AM PDT

samsung-is-still-making-a-lot-of-phones

It's that time of the year when tech companies are announcing their quarterly earnings results. Samsung has also posted its numbers and we all know the results aren't really encouraging.

Due to the Galaxy Note7 fiasco, Samsung announced yesterday its mobile division reported an operating profit of approximately $87.8 million, which translates to a 96% decrease compared to the same time last year.

The unprecedented move to kill of the Galaxy Note7 phablet, cost Samsung quite a lot. It's the lowest figure the company has posted in the past eight years.

But Samsung isn't giving up hope and is already working on the future Galaxy S8, a phone it hope will help it redeem itself in front of its customers.

The company said that putting the Galaxy Note7 aside, smartphone shipments have remained quite strong. The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge and models from the Galaxy A and J series are still in high-demand.

While Samsung's mobile division might not be fearing out so well, other Samsung subsidiaries are helping the tech giant keep afloat.

The company's overall profit for Q3 stands at approximately $4.5 billion. Still it's a decrease from the figure posted in Q3 2015.

Samsung has a lot to do, before it can put the Note7 debacle behind, but the company is committed to taking those steps. For the time being, the phone maker is conducting an investigation that will hopefully reveal the cause of the Note7 fires.

Samsung Note7 Battery Investigation Report Due Before the End of 2016

Posted: 27 Oct 2016 10:03 AM PDT

At the moment, Samsung's chief concern is getting at the bottom of the Galaxy Note7 mystery. The Korean tech giant has launched an investigation to find out what went wrong with the phablet, but we might have to wait a while until the results are announced.

Talking to a Samsung SDI executive, Reuters found out that the probe results are due to come towards the end of 2016. Samsung SDI is the subsidiary responsible for manufacturing the batteries that went into the original Note7 phones.

The Samsung official said a "weakness" has been identified in Note7 batteries, but the investigation is still ongoing. Samsung SDI is believed to have supplied up to 60% of the batteries inside the phablet.

Another Samsung SDI executive told the same publication that the battery vulnerability was limited to the batteries inside the Note7 and the company was gearing up to produce batteries for another Galaxy phone headed for a 2017 release, probably the Galaxy S8. Obviously, production was stopped.

Before the Galaxy S8 makes its debut at Barcelona next year, Samsung really needs to figure out what made the Galaxy Note7 overheat and explode. If the company wants to redeem itself in front of its fans, it can never release a fiery high-end phone ever again.

Oh... Sir! The Insult Simulator lets players destroy their opponents in the most British way possible

Posted: 27 Oct 2016 09:55 AM PDT

2016-10-27 16.13.14In 2013, the Daily Express ran an informal poll that determined Winston Churchill's famous response to a Parliament member, "Yes I am drunk, but In the morning I shall be sober and you will still be ugly," to be the best insult in history. That's certainly debatable, but it demonstrates that the Brits love a good jape, the more cutting the better. That attitude has been given life in Oh... Sir!

Vine-ThumbTwitter launched the Vine video sharing app in 2013, and it was a moderate success. Other apps added similar quick video features, but Vine never seemed like a high priority for Twitter. The company announced today that it's discontinuing the Vine app in the coming months, but it's not deleting your Vines... at least not yet.

According to Twitter, it plans to leave the vine website up and keep all existing Vines online.

Posted: 27 Oct 2016 09:40 AM PDT

pushbullet-allo

One of the many issues with Google's latest messaging app, Allo, is the total lack of a desktop application. Picking up my phone to respond to a message, when I'm already at my computer with a physical keyboard, seems silly. Allo 2.0, released yesterday, added the ability to quick reply from Allo notifications. Today's Pushbullet update taps into the quick reply functionality to add Allo support.

Once you have both Allo 2.0 and the latest Pushbullet update (v17.7) installed on your device, you should be able to reply to Allo messages on your computer.

T-Mobile will give customers $325 for bringing over a Google Pixel

Posted: 27 Oct 2016 08:28 AM PDT

T-Mobile didn't end up being a carrier partner for the Google Pixel or Pixel XL at launch, that went to Verizon and Verizon only, but that isn't stopping the Un-carrier from offering a pretty interesting deal for anyone that wants to bring the Pixel over to the network.

T-Mobile has announced that a customer who buys a Pixel from Google, or anywhere else, and brings it to their network will receive $325 in bill credits. That includes the Pixel XL, too. How it works: Buy the phone you want, sign up for a T-Mobile One plan, and then show T-Mobile your proof of purchase. Once that's done, you'll receive $13.55 in bill credits every month for 24 months, which equals $325.

That's half the cost of the 32GB Pixel, so a pretty noteworthy deal.

The deal starts October 28, and it will run only for a limited time. It's also worth noting that many Google Pixel variants are sold out on the Google Store, and for those that do have availability, shipping dates are weeks out. If you want to take advantage of this deal from T-Mobile, ordering sooner than later sounds like a solid strategy.

Calendar 5.6.2 update adds a month widget to accompany the previously lone agenda widget

Posted: 27 Oct 2016 04:38 AM PDT

Widgets. What would we do without them, eh? They show us useful information at a glance, most are resizeable, and some even change the way they look on the fly. In light of this, Google has created a partner for its previously lone calendar agenda widget, with a month widget in Calendar version 5.6.2.

This month widget is 4x5, meaning it is taller than it is wide. However, it can be resized right down to 4x4, meaning other items can fit on the same homescreen, although on my Nexus 6P the agenda widget does not fit on the same page as the month widget does.
