Replacement Galaxy Note 7 catches fire on flight, forces evacuation

Posted: 05 Oct 2016 01:00 PM PDT

Last month, Samsung shipped 500,000 replacement Galaxy Note 7 units to in the United States following a global recall of the flagship phablet. Unfortunately for Samsung, though, one of those replacement units reportedly caught fire and forced a flight to evacuate before it left the ground.

As reported by USA Today and The Verge, Brian Green picked up his replacement Galaxy Note 7 from an AT&T retail store on September 21. He says that his device had a green battery indicator his box has a black square printed on it, both of which would indicate that the handset was a replacement model and not one of the older and potentially dangerous units.

Green was boarding Southwest flight 944 from Louisville, Kentucky, to Baltimore, Maryland, when he powered down his Galaxy Note 7. He put the phone in his pocket, but quickly took it back out when he noticed it was smoking. He dropped it on the ground, and his colleague went back onto the plane to pick up some of his stuff as the plane was evacuated. Green says that the phone then caught fire, burned through the carpet, and even burned the subfloor of the plane as well.

According to Green, the Galaxy Note 7 was at 80 percent charge when he powered it down.

Green's Galaxy Note 7 is in the possession of the Louisville Fire Department — and he's switched to an iPhone 7.

Have you gotten your recalled Galaxy Note 7 replaced?

Lenovo’s Tango-powered Phab2 Pro arriving in November

Posted: 05 Oct 2016 12:07 PM PDT

It's been since June that Lenovo announced the Phab2 Pro, the world's first smartphone to utilize Google's Tango technology for depth-sensing cameras. At that time, Lenovo stated the device would be available globally at the beginning of September, though the release date was later pushed to a vague timeframe of fall 2016. Now, however, CNET is reporting that Clay Bavor, head of VR at Google, has confirmed that the Phab2 Pro will go on sale in November. We've reached out to Lenovo and the company also confirmed that the Phab2 Pro is set to release in November.

Tango is a system developed by Google that utilizes multiple cameras and advanced software to sense depth and create 3D renderings of any space that it sees. The technology is key to augmented reality and can be applied in a variety of ways. Notable demos have included AR video games in which the game utilizes the space the user is occupying, educational tours and demonstrations, and measuring spaces in homes to see how new furniture would fit and flow with the space.

The Phab2 Pro is expected to retail for $499 unlocked in the US and will be available online and in select Best Buy and Lowe's stores.

Yesterday was a frenzy-filled day, what with the new Pixel phones, Google Home, and more being announced; however, not every day can be as exciting. Google's Opinion Rewards application for Android has been updated with a new icon, a blue color scheme, and a new notification icon. Fun stuff.

As you can probably tell, the new icon is circular. This corroborates the article that Cody whipped up about Google's impending "circlification" of its icons, which has already begun with the launch of the Pixel phones yesterday.

Carmageddon goes free on the Play Store, brings ads and bugs with its latest update

Posted: 05 Oct 2016 08:25 AM PDT

carmageddon

Whenever a paid app or game goes free on the Play Store, it's for one of three reasons: a) the developer is being super generous, b) the developer has abandoned it, or c) the developer decided to use another monetization model. It is almost never the first case, though. The second one is just friendly behavior that we like seeing, despite it giving us grief over the death of another app/game. But it's incredibly annoying when it's the third scenario.

You can now control your Blink security cameras with Amazon Alexa

Posted: 05 Oct 2016 07:05 AM PDT

blink-security-cam

Lately I've been looking at security cameras for homes and small businesses. Among the different options, Blink makes a very compelling proposal. Forget about wires and always-on connectivity, forget about monthly plans and limited server storage, the system works wire-free, hassle-free, and well, completely free after the hardware purchase. You just need to put in 2 AA batteries and they'll last up to 2 years, getting triggered only when motion is detected and uploading 5-10sec clips to the cloud.

Trip Tracker from Microsoft Garage works like Google Maps' Timeline feature

Posted: 05 Oct 2016 03:34 AM PDT

Microsoft Garage's teams are bolstering with new ideas and different takes on existing ones. Every couple of weeks, sometimes even days, there's a new project being released under the Garage umbrella, and today marks the arrival of one of these: Trip Tracker.

It is built by the same team that brought Arrow Launcher and Next Lock Screen, and uses a similar idea of contextual location. The app is a bit of a demo for the LOOP SDK (Location and Observation Platform), which is a Microsoft platform for Android and iOS that can grab location in a battery-efficient way.

Motorola announces list of smartphones receiving Nougat

Posted: 04 Oct 2016 04:05 PM PDT

With Android 7.0 Nougat official and out in the open, manufacturers are beginning to release their lists of devices that will receive updates to the latest version of Android. Motorola is coming on board with its own list that's fairly extensive, though not all devices are covered. Take a look for yourself and see if your device is covered.

  • Moto G (4th Gen)
  • Moto G Plus (4th Gen)
  • Moto G Play (4th Gen)
  • Moto X Pure Edition (3rd Gen)
  • Moto X Style
  • Moto X Play
  • Moto X Force
  • Droid Turbo 2
  • Droid Maxx 2
  • Moto Z
  • Moto Z Droid
  • Moto Z Force Droid
  • Moto Z Play
  • Moto Z Play Droid
  • Nexus 6

Most of Motorola's newer devices are included, particularly because the company has streamlined its product lines in recent years, making it easier to push out updates. Lenovo has stated that it plans to start in Q4 with the Moto Z and Moto G (4th Gen). Of course, before those is the Nexus 6, which is now receiving its OTA update along with the October security patches.

We'll keep you posted on any updates, additions or subtractions from Motorola's list. For now, check out all of the Made by Google announcements from today's event.
