Here’s What’s New In Android 7.1 Nougat

Posted: 06 Oct 2016 04:08 PM PDT

android_nougat

With the launch of the Google Pixel and Pixel XL, Google also officially revealed the newest version of Android, Android 7.1.

The version is still called Nougat and it is only a point release, to indicate new features and improvements to the platform and as well. Of course, most of the software features shown off on Android 7.1 for the Pixel are only exclusive to that phone, there are still quite a few that everybody else should receive.

assistant

Thanks to Android Police, they have conveniently laid out exactly what the improvements are and they are as follows:

Pixel exclusive

  • Pixel Launcher – swipe up for all apps, new Search Box, date/weather header on home
  • Google Assistant
  • Unlimited original quality photo/video backup to Google Photos
  • Smart Storage – when storage is full, automatically removes old backed up photos/videos
  • Phone/Chat support (new support tab in settings), screen-share functionality
  • Quick switch adapter for wired setup from Android or iPhone
  • Pixel Camera:
    • Electronic Image Stabilization ("video stabilization") 2.0
    • Pro Features
      • White Balance Presets
      • Exposure Compensation
      • AE/AF Locking
      • Viewfinder grid modes
    • HW-accelerated (on Qualcomm Hexagon coprocessor) HDR+ image processing
    • Smartburst
  • Sensor Hub processor with tightly integrated sensors (accel, gyro, mag) + connectivity (Wi-Fi, Cell, GPS)
  • Cosmetic
    • Solid navbar icons with home affordance for Assistant
    • SysUI accent color theming
    • Wallpaper picker with new wallpapers and sounds
    • New setup look and feel
    • Dynamic calendar date icon

Android Nougat 7.1 (non-Pixel exclusive)

  • Night Light
  • Touch/display performance improvements
  • Moves (Fingerprint swipe down gesture – opt-in)
  • Seamless A/B system updates
  • Daydream VR mode
  • Developer features:
    • App shortcuts / shortcut manager APIs
    • Circular app icons support
    • Keyboard image insertion
    • Fingerprint sensor gesture to open/close notification shade
    • Manual storage manager Intent for apps
    • Improved VR thread scheduling
    • Enhanced wallpaper metadata
    • Multi-endpoint call support
    • Support for various MNO requirements
      • PCDMA voice privacy property
      • Source type support for Visual Voicemail
      • Carrier config options for managing video telephony
  • Manual storage manager – identifies apps and files and apps using storage

Overall this is exactly what I expected from a point release from Google and it's just too bad the Google Assistant will only be available on the Pixel. However, I predict Google will eventually roll it out to everyone else sometime in the future.

Google has confirmed that they will release the update as a developer preview by the end of this year.

OUYA brings 4-player brawler Gurgamoth to Android TV

Posted: 06 Oct 2016 12:54 PM PDT

image (1)OUYA may have been a bust as an Android-powered game console, but after being sold to Razer and focusing on software, it has cultivated an impressive specialization for local multiplayer. The publisher's latest release for Android TV is Gurgamoth, a 4-player 2D brawler that landed on Steam back in February. It's available on the Play Store now for five bucks with no in-app purchases.

In Gurgamoth players take on the role of a "cultist," a floating acolyte of an ancient Lovecraftian evil, and each one is trying to beat the crap out of one to three others.

Nextbit Robin update adds new app features and latest security patches

Posted: 06 Oct 2016 10:06 AM PDT

Nextbit is updating the Robin, its cloud-focused smartphone, with some tweaks to its core apps and the latest security patches.

The update is relatively minor in scope, but it does include some forward-facing additions. There are some tweaks to the core apps on the Robin, like a new Gallery app that will allow owners to crop photos, rotate them, add a filter, and more. There will be a pencil icon that is present when you open a single image. Tap on that and you can start editing.

The other main part of the update is bringing the Robin up-to-date on security patches. The new software includes the latest Android patches, as well as the necessary fixes to protect against the QuadRooter vulnerability, which was discovered back in August.

Dan The Man from Halfbrick Studios is live in the Play Store

Posted: 06 Oct 2016 09:10 AM PDT

unnamed

After being listed only for pre-registration, the latest game from Halfbrick Studios has finally dropped on Android. Dan The Man is a classic action platformer with lots of punches, kicks, and bad guys just begging for the liberal application of both. It's free to play, but the IAP system doesn't seem too offensive.

Dan The Man is essentially a side-scrolling beat-em-up with some platforming thrown in for good measure. The controls are tight and the fighting is surprisingly fun.

T-Mobile will launch the LG V20 on October 28

Posted: 06 Oct 2016 08:10 AM PDT

It's been one month since LG made the V20 official, and for anyone that's been waiting for a launch date, the wait is now over.

T-Mobile has finally confirmed when subscribers can expect to make the V20 their own: Friday, October 28. The date is the only thing that's been confirmed at this point, though, so there's no word on pricing just yet.

T-Mobile is throwing in a pretty big bonus with those who pick up the V20: a pair of B&O BeoPlay H3 headphones, which retail for $149.

If you need a refresher on the V20′s specs, it includes a Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of built-in storage, a microSD slot, NFC, USB Type-C, and a fingerprint reader. There's also a 3,200mAh removable battery.

On the back of the V20 lives a 16-megapixel standard camera and an 8-megapixel wide-angle camera. The V20′s also got what LG is calling Hybrid Auto Focus, which offers laser autofocus, phase detection autofocus, and contrast autofocus. Shazam Lite weighs 1MB, uses little data, works offline, and is coming to select countries today

Posted: 06 Oct 2016 05:14 AM PDT

shazam-lite

The regular Shazam app is becoming more and more of a social network centered around music than the music discovery engine it once was. It weighs over 27MB, tries to load recommendations and popular tracks each time you open it, and has charts and Auto Shazam, and plenty of features that you may not need or want especially when you're on a slow network or have limited bandwidth. That's why Shazam Lite was created.
