Google Duo replacing Hangouts as standard GMS app

Posted: 07 Oct 2016 02:06 PM PDT

Google's video calling app, Duo, officially began rolling out until last month, and Google has big plans for it.

Google is now emailing Google Mobile Services (GMS) partners and informing them that, beginning December 1, Google Duo will become part of the package of apps required to be installed on Android-based telephony devices, aka Android smartphones. Duo is officially replacing Hangouts as a stock app, which means that if manufacturers want to install Google apps like Gmail, they'll also need to install Duo.

Duo is already a pre-installed app on the Google Pixel and Pixel XL, so it's not surprising that Google wants to push the video calling app in a big way. And while having it already available on the "Phone by Google" is a good step, making it a stock option right out of the box for future Android handsets is a bigger one.

Have you tried out Google Duo yet?

Google first talked about Google Home back at I/O, but the device became official at the recent October hardware event. The speakers didn't go into detail on all the apps and services that Home would work with, preferring instead to focus on a few specific demos. Now, Google has published a list of everything that works with Home, and we expect this will grow over time.

Here's what Google has published so far on its support site for Home.

Mafia III: Rivals now available for Android, met with mixed reviews

Posted: 07 Oct 2016 12:02 PM PDT

mafia-gameplay

Mafia III is finally out for PC and various game consoles, but if you're looking for a smartphone port, this isn't it. We covered Mafia III: Rivals when it was initially announced, and it looked like your standard mobile RPG, as opposed to Mafia III's open-world gameplay. In both games, you are a crime boss attempting to rise through the ranks of New Bordeaux's criminal underworld. But that is where the similarities end.

Runtastic and Google Play Music team up to bring you the tunes

While I enjoy working out, I will admit that going without my favorite music makes it much more difficult — especially with cardio. For me, good music equals gains. Equally important, though, is keeping track of progress, but that can often require switching between two or three apps. That is, unless you go old-school and carry a notebook.

Starting today, users of Runtastic will be able to access curated playlists from Play Music directly within the fitness app. These span a wide variety of genres and styles for any mood or physical activity.

LG V20 hitting Sprint on October 28

Posted: 07 Oct 2016 11:11 AM PDT

Autumn is here and it's bringing plenty of new smartphones with it. One recent launch that garnered attention is that of the LG V20, which packs in dual displays and dual rear cameras. Availability details were a little vague initially, with only a Korean rollout getting an official date. But US launch details are starting to come out, and Sprint has now announced that it will carry the LG V20 beginning on October 28.

As a specs recap, LG has outfitted the V20 with a Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, a 3200mAh battery and Android 7.0 Nougat. Of course, the distinctive features are the dual displays, with the main being a 5.7-inch 2560×1440 display. On top of that is a small secondary display that can be used for notifications, app shortcuts and more. On the back of the device is a dual-camera set-up with a 16-megapixel sensor and an 8-megapixel wide-angle lens, both of which are paired with Hybrid Autofocus.

Sprint hasn't disclosed pricing yet, but the company is offering a $200 trade-in for eligible devices plus a free pair of Bang & Olufsen H3 headphones. Pre-orders begin on October 21, with units shipping on October 28, when widespread availability will hit.

Privacy mode is based on the S Secure feature Opera created for Samsung for the Galaxy J5 Prime and J7 Prime, which filtered ad trackers and other privacy risks.

AT&T, Sprint will let replacement Galaxy Note 7 owners exchange their device

Posted: 07 Oct 2016 10:06 AM PDT

Samsung rolled out its replacement program for the Galaxy Note 7 back in late September, letting owners exchange units with faulty batteries.

However, recent reports surfaced about a replacement Galaxy Note 7 caught fire while on a Southwest airplane earlier this week, and so fears that the issue may not been resolved have cropped up. As a result, AT&T and Sprint have both come forward with a solution for owners of the replacement Galaxy Note 7.

Replacement Galaxy Note 7 users that are worried their unit might also catch fire can exchange their device for any other handset they would like. Here is the full statement from Sprint regarding the exchange, as reported by Engadget:

"Sprint is working collaboratively with Samsung to better understand the most recent concerns regarding replacement Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is also investigating the Note 7 replacement device. At this time, CPSC has not specifically said if customers should or should not use the replacement model. If a Sprint customer with a replacement Note 7 has any concerns regarding their device, we will exchange it for any other device at any Sprint retail store during the investigation window. We will provide additional information when the investigation has concluded."

As it stands, T-Mobile is only accepting returns as long as they fall under its standard 14-day return policy. The Un-carrier began its replacement program on September 21, so if a replacement Galaxy Note 7 owner picked up their handset on that date, the "remorse period" has ended, and it doesn't look like they'll be able to exchange their handset any longer.

Verizon Wireless has not offered a statement regarding the situation just yet. The carrier opened replacement sales for the Galaxy Note 7 on September 21 as well, and the carrier offers a 14-day return period, so that window has closed, if the carrier does not end up extending it in some way like Sprint and AT&T have.

Prisma offline mode comes to Android

Posted: 07 Oct 2016 09:09 AM PDT

prisma

Prisma came to Android a few months ago with a ton of really impressive photo filters. Whereas some apps with filters try to be subtle, Prisma completely reinterprets the pictures you fed in, turning them into some fancy art. The main drawback; Prisma only worked online. That is finally changing on Android.

Offline mode was announced a while back, but it it came to iOS first. Now, the first offline version of Prisma is live in the Play Store.

Verizon to lock bootloader, handle system updates for its Pixel models

Posted: 06 Oct 2016 05:10 PM PDT

Google has announced that the Pixel and Pixel XL will be coming exclusively to Verizon (outside of unlocked models of course). Google's Nexus devices have never had a good relationship with carriers, and it seems that it isn't much different for the Pixel lineup.

The company has confirmed that Verizon will be handling system updates for the carrier models of the devices. This means it's likely that updates will be delayed by quite a bit, much like with old Nexus devices. Verizon has also locked the bootloaders and will be installing bloatware (though much of it can be removed).

There is a saving grace, and that's Google handling the monthly security updates. So even though you won't be getting the latest version of Android, the device will stay secure. But if you care about the latest version of Android, avoid the Verizon Pixel and Pixel XL.
