Google Screen Search, formally known as Google Now on Tap, is a feature I don't use often - but is incredibly helpful when I need it. If you're unfamiliar, it provides information to you based on the text on your screen, and works on any Android 6.0+ device with the Google app. For example, a few days ago I received a text message confirming an appointment, and Screen Search created a calendar event from the message contents.

A pair of fresh updates of the Play Movies & TV app rolled out to both Android TV and regular devices yesterday. Like many other recent updates, there's not a lot of new functionality to see on the surface, particularly for the Android TV version. Phones and tablets gained a new toggle to control notifications about expiring rewards, but that's about it. However, a teardown shows a few improvements scheduled for future updates, including 4K support, a special channel for watching trailers, and recommendations for similar TV shows.

Verizon and T-Mobile also letting customers to replace Note 7 with other device

Posted: 07 Oct 2016 05:11 PM PDT

The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 recall may have replaced defective devices with models that Samsung claims are safe, but some are worrying that there is still a risk of the devices exploding (at least a bigger risk than usual, as all lithium ion devices can explode).

There was recently an explosion of a replacement, safe Note 7 on a plane which caused an evacuation and an investigation. Why it started venting while off is a mystery and we hope to get some answers eventually, but people are understandably concerned that their replacement device is not safe.

AT&T and Sprint both started offering Note 7 owners replacement devices of their choosing, and now Verizon and T-Mobile are doing the same. If you have a Note 7 and you're too concerned about the risk to want it anymore, the  carriers will be able to replace it for you starting today. We still don't know if the devices pose any real danger, but some may believe it's better to be safe than sorry.

Facebook announces Events app, coming soon to Android

Posted: 07 Oct 2016 04:06 PM PDT

Facebook has announced a dedicated app called Events from Facebook for browsing, joining, and managing events. The company claims that over 100 million people use Facebook events daily, so it makes sense to create an app to more easily discover them.

The app allows you to see events your friends are interested in, your liked pages are talking about, and various events in your area. There's even a map view to see what's going on around you. The app gives out recommendations based on your interests, and you can find events that are going on at any time.  It also features a calendar for managing all the events you're interested in, which is a nice touch.

The app is available on iOS today and is launching soon on Android. We should be used to that by now, unfortunately. Will you be giving this app a try?
