Wear Dialer for Android Wear lets you place calls from your wrist

Posted: 01 Nov 2016 02:32 PM PDT

Phone calls are not my favorite thing in the world, but I suppose if I have to make one I'd prefer the minimum of effort to be expended. Wear Dialer from HuskyDEV lets you initiate calls from your wrist. That sounds easy.

Incoming calls are handled on all Wear devices at the system level, so that's not really what this app is supposed to do. It provides an interface for placing calls.

There are more 'Education' apps than any other category on the Play Store, and other weird stats from 42matters

Posted: 01 Nov 2016 02:21 PM PDT

stats42matters is an analysis firm that monitors broad trends on mobile data, specifically on the Play Store and the App Store. The company is mostly B2B, that is, most of their products are only helpful if you're working on some other aspect of the mobile market. But they've made a sliver of the data they've collected through their API free to the public, and it's fascinating. While the 42matters data isn't official, it does give us an interesting look into the Play Store as a whole.

Samsung begins offering Galaxy S7 edge in Blue Coral

Posted: 01 Nov 2016 01:25 PM PDT

As Samsung works to rebuild and restructure after its Galaxy Note 7 troubles, the company is turning to its successful devices as a way to entice customers to stay with the company. One of those successful devices is the Galaxy S7 edge, which has proven to be a popular alternative for Note 7 owners turning in their devices. Beginning today, Samsung is offering the Galaxy S7 edge in a new color option of Blue Coral.

Rather than opting for a vivid, electric blue, Samsung is keeping things more subdued with its Blue Coral option. The color is calming and Samsung says that it is "inspired by nature". To further highlight the tones, Samsung has outfitted this color option with a metallic gold trim, which plays nicely with the blue and warms the device's visual appeal.

The Blue Coral color option for the Galaxy S7 edge is available today, November 1, in select markets, including the US.

Posted: 01 Nov 2016 12:28 PM PDT

imageIs it weird that AppSales.net displays its prices in US currency, even for sales that aren't actually valid in the United States? Yes it is. But with a 95% discount on a really solid top-down racing game, we can forgive a little international inconsistency. The latest Android game to get the ten cent treatment is Reckless Racing 3, Pixelbite's threequel to one of the best games in the early Android era.

Lenovo Phab 2 Pro launches with Google Tango features

Posted: 01 Nov 2016 11:31 AM PDT

Back in June, Lenovo officially showcased the Phab 2 Pro to the world as the first Google Tango smartphone, and now the handset is available to buy.

Lenovo has opened orders for the Phab 2 Pro today, with shipments to start within five to seven business days after the order is place. The Phab 2 Pro is priced at at $499. Lenovo will also be launching a clear case at some point in the near future, but no specific date has been provided just yet.

As far as features go, the Phab 2 Pro boasts a 6.4-inch 2.5D curved display with a resolution of 2560×1440, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 processor, and a battery that measures in at 4050mAh. There is a 16-megapixel camera on the back, an 8MP front-facing camera, 64GB of built-in storage, 4GB of RAM, and a microSD card slot for expandable storage The Phab 2 Pro also features a fingerprint sensor and three microphones and runs Android 6.0 out of the box.

The big draw here are the Tango features. The Phab 2 Pro uses the built-in software, cameras, and sensors to launch augmented reality experiences on the device. The first of which is from Lowe's, which will allow owners to not only measure spaces in a home, but also visualize what furniture might look like in the area, too. The device can take up to 250,000 measurements per second.

What do you think of the Phab 2 Pro?

OnePlus 4 Rumored to Arrive with Snapdragon 830 this Summer

Posted: 01 Nov 2016 10:05 AM PDT

the-current-oneplus-3

OnePlus is reportedly gearing up to launch a new version of the OnePlus 3 which will bring forth more advanced specs, but this week word on the company's next flagship has also surfaced.

According to a report coming out of Android Pure who did a little digging up on Weibo, the OnePlus 4 is expected to arrive in June/July 2017 with a next-gen Snapdragon 830 chipset on board.

Word on the street has is that Samsung will be in charge of mass producing the chipset, which is based on the 10nm processes. But apparently Samsung is said to be behind schedule, so Qualcomm is contemplating handing the Snapdragon 830 production gig over to TSCM. Although, TSCM hasn't kick started the production of its 10nm chipset yet, so the rumor seems a bit dubious.

Going back to the OnePlus 4, the CPU under the hood is expected be feature clock speeds of 3.0GHz plus an Adreno 620 GPU inside. A 4,000 mAh battery should be keeping things alive on the phone and Android 7.0 Nougat will come pre-install.

While all this sounds pretty great, don't forget we're still in rumor land and you need to take this info with a healthy dose of salt.

As for the phone that's next-in-line for release, the OnePlus 3T we expect to see it arrive with QHD display, Snapdragon 821, 6GB of RAM and $480 USD price tag. Stay tuned as we update you on the developments.

Lenovo Phab 2 Pro Launches for $499, But Not in Canada Yet

Posted: 01 Nov 2016 10:05 AM PDT

lenovo-phab-2-pro-launches

As anticipated, the first Project Tango (or just Tango) smartphone was made available for purchase today. The device called the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro can be grabbed by American customers for $499 USD a pop. As for those in Canada, we can just dream of buying this phone, for now.

Remember that Lenovo unveiled the Phab 2 Pro back in June, but now the phone can be ordered by interested customers. The device features a 6.4-inch display with 2560 x 1440 resolution and a Snapdragon 625 chipset underthe hood working hand in hand with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage.

The device runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box, but there's no word whether an update to Android Nougat is in the cards.

The main 16MP camera is capable of shooting 4K video, which is pretty neat. But what makes this phablet special is the fact that it's the first Project Tango phone to ever make a debut on the market.

There are three sensors embedded in the phone's rear panel which are used to map the user's surroundings, allowing the device to see what the person sees. The sensors can then use the information to create 3D maps that can be used for augmented reality game apps and more.

No word when the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro might be reaching Canada, but we'll keep you updated.

TAG Heuer Unveils Rose Gold Connected with Android Wear for $9,900

Posted: 01 Nov 2016 09:25 AM PDT

It's been a year since TAG Heuer officially entered the smartwatch market with the Connected smartwatch, which runs Android Wear under the hood. It's a distinct design, to say the least, and the company has apparently sold enough of the device to warrant a brand new variant a year later.

Unfortunately, it looks like TAG Heuer decided to keep the specs of the new smartwatch the same as last year's model, which includes an Intel chipset inside, along with the distinct TAG Heuer design on the outside. There is one key difference this time around: Now the TAG Heuer Connected comes in Rose Gold, and the price tag has jumped up quite a bit to $9,900.

For reference, last year's model, which didn't feature a solid rose gold design, cost $1,500. With the significantly higher price tag, the new Rose Gold Connected will only be available in select retailers, so no online sales this time around.

As far as the specifications go, here's what the smartwatch offers: A 1.5-inch circular display with a resolution of 360×360, equipped with a dual-core Intel chipset inside, which is clocked at 1.6GHz. The Connected has 1GB of RAM, 4GB of built-in storage, supports Bluetooth 4.1 LE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, and the battery is measured in at 410mAh.

How much is too much for a smartwatch? Some companies seem determined to figure it out. What do you think of the Rose Gold Connected?

Hangouts v14 adds app shortcuts for 7.1 Nougat, changes setup steps for group chat, and reorganizes several chat settings [APK Download]

hangouts

Earlier this year Google's VP of Communications, Nick Fox, declared Hangouts would be refocused on the enterprise market where it had found much more adoption. Ironically, the couple of updates since that statement haven't exactly screamed professionalism, or even added much of anything particularly relevant to the workplace. That changes with v14, which cleans up and improves various aspects of group chats. This version also enables app shortcuts (formerly Launcher Shortcuts) for use on Android 7.1 and makes a few other tweaks, as well.

Flow, Microsoft's IFTTT competitor for power users, is out of beta

Microsoft has a treat for you power users this Halloween. Their automated actions service, Microsoft Flow, is finally out of beta. Flow is part of Microsoft's new "power trio," combined with the company's PowerApps and Power BI tools. While those are mostly only useful to companies, Flow has definite use for normal people. In fact, after just an hour of playing with it, I'm convinced it's better than the popular IFTTT service.
