iClever BTS04 Bluetooth speaker review

Posted: 11 Nov 2016 02:22 PM PST

Bluetooth version: 4.0
Battery life: 10 hours, 1800 mAh
Water resistance: IPX5
Dimensions: 6.37 x 1.51 x 1.11 inches, 9 oz
Price: $32.99
Where to buy: iClever, Amazon

iClever BTS04 Bluetooth speaker review 3

The top features five buttons; power, play/pause, multifunction, previous track, and next track. There's also a microphone up top. You have to hold the track buttons to adjust volume, which can be annoying. The opposite would have been better.

iClever BTS04 Bluetooth speaker review 4

The right side features a microUSB port and an aux jack underneath a rubber flap to aid in the water resistance.

The bottom has two rubber feet that are very grippy but not sticky.

Audio quality

It's hard to expect too much in the audio department at this price point. And considering that the battery life is pretty good and it offers water resistance, it's even more surprising that this speaker sounds ridiculously good all things considered.

This speaker gets very loud for its size and has almost no distortion. Bump the volume down a bit and it's distortion free. It can fill a large room with ease.

The highs are clear, the bass is surprisingly strong and sharp (again, for the size), and music sounds very good. The mids aren't nearly warm enough, and as with all loud speakers, the highs are a little strong. But it definitely sounds great.

Build quality

This speaker is built extremely well. There hasn't been a single creak from it and it feels very durable. The front and back are pieces of aluminum and the rest is very solid plastic. The buttons are rubber and have a solid click to them. The rubber cover over the ports is a bit flimsy but hasn't been damaged in my use.

It's also water resistance with an IPX5 rating. This means it can withstand low pressure water like rain, so don't go dunking it in the pool. Nonetheless, it's great to know that it'll survive a bit of water when you're out.

Battery life

The battery is rated at 10 hours, which is pretty good for a Bluetooth speaker and great for the price point. Throughout heavy use at high volumes, the battery has held up to the battery rating.

iClever BTS049.5 / 10

At $33, it's hard not to recommend this speaker. It gets really loud while staying clear and has some impressive bass. I haven't heard a speaker that sounds this good at this price point. Definitely pick one up to throw in your backpack or use around the house!

The OnePlus 3 will receive a beta build of Nougat this month

Posted: 11 Nov 2016 01:32 PM PST

OnePlus head of software Brian Yoon has announced that the OnePlus 3 will receive its first build of Android 7.0 Nougat this month. The announcement follows a recent shuffle at the company in which it merged the teams behind its two software versions, HydrogenOS and OxygenOS.

The first edition of Nougat will be a beta community build. This version is soon to be followed by a complete, finished update that's set to arrive before the end of the year. In the announcement, Yoon also confirmed that older devices, specifically the OnePlus 2, will also receive an update to Android 7.0 Nougat, but that there isn't a specific timeframe in place just yet.

Keep your eyes open, OnePlus folk, it won't be long before Nougat comes knocking.

AT&T Stream Saver saves data by lowering video quality

Posted: 11 Nov 2016 01:32 PM PST

AT&T has announced Stream Saver, a new feature that will allow users to conserve data by lowering HD video to 480p standard resolution when streaming over data rather than Wi-Fi. Stream Saver will begin rolling out in early 2017, and users will receive a notification when it's available with directions on to how enable and disable the feature.

Stream Saver competes with T-Mobile's Binge On feature, which functions in a similar fashion. AT&T is working to make the feature even simpler with a quick toggle in the myAT&T app that allows users to turn Stream Saver on or off. This should be easier than T-Mobile's solution, which involves the user dialing a specific code to enable or disable Binge On.

Google Play Newsstand reveals a new design in latest update

Posted: 11 Nov 2016 12:26 PM PST

Google has begun rolling out an update to its Google Play Newsstand app that brings a visual redesign and refines many core features of the service. Upon opening the app, users are greeted and shown the weather, with a single stream of personalized stories below that's being referred to as "Briefing".

At the bottom are four links to different sections of the app: For You, Library, Explore, and Read Later. While Explore and Read Later are familiar, the former two are largely new additions. For You is the aforementioned landing screen. Library consists of Topics & Sources, which stores magazines and content from the previous My Library feature, and Digest, which organizes the top three stories from each topic and source.

Additional changes include a host of new settings and toggles, giving users more control over the app.

This update is version 4.0 and is now rolling out through the Google Play Store. Screenshots are available at the via link below.

Ambi-Turner gives Pixel owners the ambient notification powers they've been missing

Posted: 11 Nov 2016 11:47 AM PST

ambiturnerGoogle giveth, and Google taketh away. Nexus/Pixel buyers know this too well - from little-used features like lockscreen widgets to more interesting fare like wireless charging, a lot of things have showed up in one Nexus phone only to disappear in the next. The Pixel and Pixel XL, for example, are missing some of the ambient notification tools that debuted with the Nexus 6. But as usual, there's a developer willing to fill in the gap.

This visceral stealth game is about a Jason Voorhees-style serial killer methodically murdering his partying neighbors. Now there's a mobile version for phones and tablets too, going for $7 with no in-app purchases.

There are 2 Billion active Chrome browsers across mobile and desktop

Posted: 11 Nov 2016 03:48 AM PST

Chrome is installed by default on all Android devices that come from Google's partners as well as all Chromebook computers. That probably accounts to a lot of devices, without taking into consideration all the Chrome browsers that users choose to install on their PCs and Macs. So it's not hard to see how the browser could now be running on billions of phones and desktops and actively used on most of them.

HTC Bolt launches at Sprint, runs Android 7.0 on a 5.5-inch Quad HD display

Posted: 11 Nov 2016 12:16 AM PST

After leaking out a couple of months ago, the HTC Bolt is now officially official.

Sprint is now selling the HTC Bolt. You can snag the Bolt for $0 down and 24 monthly payments of $25 each, or for $199.99 with a two-year contract and mail-in rebate. The Bolt is also available for $600 without an agreement.

In exchange for your hard-earned dollars, you'll get a device that runs Android 7.0 Nougat on a 5.5-inch 2560×1440 display. There's a 16-megapixel camera on the back of the Bolt that includes Optical Image Stabilization and Phase Detection Auto Focus, and around front there's an 8-megapixel camera with a wide panorama mode.

Other features of the HTC Bolt include an octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a microSD slot, a fingerprint reader, and a 3,200mAh battery. Sprint and HTC have thrown in 3x20MHz Carrier Aggregation, too, which can offer faster speeds in cities where it's available. Sprint is rolling out 3xCA in markets like Chicago, San Francisco, Minneapolis, Dallas, Denver, Kansas City, Cleveland, and Columbus.

One feature that the HTC Bolt lacks is a 3.5mm headphone jack. That means that you'll rely on the Bolt's USB Type-C port for plugging in headphones. The good news is that HTC and Sprint are including USB Type-C headphones in the Bolt's box.

The HTC Bolt looks like a more affordable version of the HTC 10, which is HTC's currently flagship. The Bolt could actually be a more intriguing option for some folks, though, thanks to features like its larger 5.5-inch display. If your interest has been piqued by the HTC Bolt, you can check it out at Sprint's website using the link below.

Android Auto v2.0 has a jump shortcut for lists in audio apps and prepares to add several new settings and a homescreen shortcut [APK Teardown + Download]

Posted: 10 Nov 2016 04:18 PM PST

Android Auto v2.0 began rolling out earlier this week with a pretty significant redesign that made the driving mode part of the app's primary UI. There were quite a few changes to support the on-phone Auto simulator, including a fair number of new options like the ability to auto-launch with certain Bluetooth connections (and prevent that if it's still in a pocket).

While most of the new features are easy to discover while poking around in either the driving mode interface or in the couple of config screens, there's a new feature in the audio player that deserves to be called out on its own.
