YouTube Gaming v1.9 adds a viewer counter to live streams and a new easter egg [APK Download]

Posted: 14 Nov 2016 02:56 PM PST

An update to YouTube Gaming began rolling out last week, but this one is pretty tiny by most standards. While it surely has the typical bug fixes and performance improvements, the only visible change is a brand new counter above the chat box on live streams. Of course, with the increased version number, there is also a new Easter egg to track down, and the answer is in this post – if you happen to be a collector, that is.

Samsung Buys Harman for $8 Billion to Conquer Connected Car Industry

Posted: 14 Nov 2016 01:57 PM PST

harman-in-car-system

Samsung is a company that produces anything from washing machines and smartphones to processor chips and storage. The Korean tech giant has now announced plans to further its push into the automotive industry.

Samsung said today it will be purchasing car and audio giant Harman for a whopping CAD $10.87 billion. The handset maker will be paying CAD $152 per share, a healthy 28% increase from Harman's current share price.

The California-based firm is well known for its audio products which includes Harman Kardon, JBL, Mark Levions and AKG Acoustics. However, two-thirds of its business come from the auto industry. Harman is a market leader when it comes to connected car solutions with more than 30 million vehicles equipped with its connected car and auto system and Samsung wants a piece of it too.

Samsung believes it is making a very good investment, since it predicts that the connected technologies marker will grow exponentially to $100 billion by 2025. And with Harman's tech strengths including infotainment, over-the-air updates and other telematics the future seems to be quite bright.

The Korean tech giant hasn't explicitly said it plans to compete with Google's Android Auto or Apple's CarPlay, but it's pretty obvious this will be the case. Samsung has been dipping its fingers in the automotive industry before. A while ago the company unveiled Samsung Connect Auto, while supporting startups like Vinli that are trying to create a worthy app ecosystem for connected cars.

The deal between the two companies will be finalized sometimes around mid-2017. Even if Samsung purchased Harman, the latter will remain a standalone subsidiary.

Android 7.0 Nougat for OnePlus 3 Release Date: November

Posted: 14 Nov 2016 01:37 PM PST

One Plus 3 smartphone

Android 7.0 Nougat has been released for two months now, but the software has yet to arrive on the majority of smartphones in circulation today.

The LG G5 is currently receiving Android 7.0 Nougat in South Korea, while Samsung has kickstarted a beta program for the newest Android version in the US and UK. It seems like OnePlus will soon be jumping on the Nougat bandwagon too.

OnePlus' head of software, Brian Yoon confirmed with Engadget last week the beta community build will become available for the OnePlus 3 at the end of this month. That's a pretty nice pre-Christmas gift isn't it?

Yoon also specified that older devices such as the OnePlus 2 will also get a taste of Nougat as well, but at the moment we can't tell you when exactly it will happen.

Once the update gets rolling, it will hit some territories sooner, while others will have longer to wait. But users in Canada will hopefully receive their update until Christmas, which will come through carriers.

Speaking of Android 7.0 Nougat, OnePlus will probably be unveiling soon a new handset, the OnePlus 3T which is expected to ship out with Nougat out of the box and OxygenOS on top. The phone is also rumoured to be the first to make an appearance with 8GB of RAM.

LG has sold over 200,000 V20 units in the US

Posted: 14 Nov 2016 11:31 AM PST

LG Electronics today announced that its popular V20 smartphone has surpassed over 200,000 units sold in the US since its launch on October 28. This sales figure is double that of its predecessor, the LG V10, which had a narrower appeal. The news is also of importance considering that sales have likely been higher as a partial result of Samsung's Galaxy Note 7 recall and shutdown, allowing LG an opportunity to snag customers who may have otherwise opted for its competitor's device.

The LG V20 is in a better situation than its predecessor for a number of reasons. The V20 features a refined design that has greater mass appeal, in addition to offering powerful specs for a mainstream audience, such as a top of the line camera. LG has also launched the device on all four major US carriers, offering wider availability to the US market.

While the future is always unknown, LG looks to be in a good position heading forward with the V20.

Samsung acquires Harman to expand into automotive audio

Posted: 14 Nov 2016 09:31 AM PST

Samsung Electronics has announced that it is purchasing Harman for approximately $8 billion in cash, or $112.00 per share. This acquisition propels Samsung into the heart of the automotive industry, particularly in regards to connected cars. Harman is a key player in this industry, supplying manufacturers with audio systems, infotainment displays and a number of safety features.

The deal is the largest in Samsung's history and positions the company to become a powerful player in the automotive industry. Samsung's specialties include displays, processors, connectivity technology and user-friendly software, all of which complement Harman's strength in audio and its foothold in the marketplace.

The timeframe is important to note, as Harman recently secured deals with two of America's automotive giants, Fiat Chrysler and General Motors. By purchasing Harman, Samsung is joining forces with some of the world's largest automotive manufacturers. This network will allow the company to quickly become an important player in the connected car industry, and it places Samsung in competition with Google, Apple and Microsoft, all of which are working to stake a claim in the market.

Additionally, the deal includes Harman's distinct brands, such as Harman/Kardon and JBL, as well as the licensing of Bang & Olufsen.

Samsung says that Harman will operate as a standalone Samsung subsidiary, with Dinesh Paliwal remaining in place as CEO of the company. Harman's work force, headquarters, and facilities will also be retained, with the acquisition opening up more opportunities for advancement through the two companies.

Google Play Music update adds machine learning and contextual tools for music recommendations

Posted: 14 Nov 2016 08:36 AM PST

Music recommendations for streaming services have grown up quite a bit, and machine learning is looking to help quite a bit more.

Google has officially built machine learning into Play Music, which will now play a key role when it comes to recommending music you might like. It observes more than past listening habits, though, with Play Music tracking your location, activity, and even the weather to recommend your next potentially favorite track.

The new machine learning recommendations are opt-in, so if you want your music streaming experience to change on the fly when you walk into the gym or when you get on the plane. Google calls the new home screen the "personal DJ," and thanks to the process it should all get better the more the user listens.

There's one more thing: an automatic offline playlist. Specifically, Google says it will keep an offline playlist with your recently played tracks "at all times."

The update is now rolling out and is available for Android, the web, and iOS.
