Google Photos is progressively building out its feature set. Version 2.4 began rolling out last week and it can now show which albums certain people appear in. This follows the addition of some newly enhanced editing controls and dynamic filters added with version 2.3 a couple of weeks ago, which will also be discussed in this post. All of this can be topped with with a couple of interesting hints at future additions found during a teardown, including initial support for RAW images.

OnePlus 3T Launches w/ 16MP Selfie Camera, Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow

As anticipated OnePlus unveiled its next-gen flagship device, the OnePlus 3T. Although the OnePlus 3 will not be discontinued, the 3T is now the top-tier phone in the OnePlus portfolio.

Anyway don't expect the OnePlus 3T to sport massive upgrades. The phone is a little bit better than the OnePlus 3, but we're not really sure it is worth the upgrade. You will have to decide.

oneplus-3t-gunmetal

The phone comes with an identical display, meaning a 5.5-inch screen with 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution, but employs the superior powers of a Snapdragon 821 chipset (compared to a Snapdragon 820 in the previous phone).

The selfie snapper on the new 3T has been upped to 16MP (from 8MP), so selfie enthusiasts will really love the new OnePlus device. The main camera remains the same featuring a 16MP sensor but a protective sapphire screen has been added to shield it from misfortune. OnePlus also upgraded the camera by improving video image stabilization.

oneplus-3t-software

OnePlus throws in 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, but there's a new 128GB version now. The battery capacity has been upgraded to 3,400 mAh, so the 3T should last you longer than the previous-gen device.

oneplus-3t

Despite previous rumors the 3T bundles Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out of the box, but OnePlus assures us that the Nougat update will arrive by the end of the year.

The new OnePlus 3T price starts at CAD $590 come November 22.

Posted: 16 Nov 2016 10:56 AM PST

imageRemember that scene from every action movie ever, where the headstrong but academically challenged hero has to be walked through an on-the-job lesson in bomb defusal by the specialist on the other end of the radio/phone/hyperspace ansible connection? Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes is basically that experience, set up for two players (the on-the-job hero and remote specialist), and designed to create the maximum amount of tension possible. It debuted on Steam last year, but now it's available on the Play Store for early Daydream VR users.

Twitter gets a dedicated Android TV app for streaming football (and maybe some other videos too)

Posted: 16 Nov 2016 10:06 AM PST

Twitter_20161116_093731As nice as it is to get a new Android TV app from a large web property (and also rare, natch), one might reasonably wonder what Twitter is doing on a platform almost exclusively dedicated to streaming video. The answer is, of course, streaming video: Twitter has a lucrative deal with the NFL to stream some but not all of this season's Thursday Night Football games for free on the service.

Amazon introduces family plan for Music Unlimited

Posted: 16 Nov 2016 10:06 AM PST

Amazon has announced the availability of its new family plan for Amazon Music Unlimited. This plan is priced at $14.99/month for Amazon Prime and non-Prime customers. Amazon Prime customers can also take advantage of a special savings with the option to purchase an annual package for $149. The plan accommodates six members, and each one gets unlimited streaming and personalized recommendations based on their own listening history.

Amazon introduced Music Unlimited in October with the mission of creating a service that could compete with services such as Spotify and Google Play Music. While Amazon is late to the market, the company is distinguishing its service with plan options and voice controls. Customers can purchase less expensive plans for a single Amazon device, such as the Amazon Echo. Music Unlimited is also integrated with Alexa, Amazon's voice assistant, which enables a range of available options for interacting with the service.

To say Allo had an underwhelming release would be an understatement. The Allo 2.0 update helped matters slightly, and today Google announced three new features - chat themes, Smart Smiley, and stickers from the upcoming "Fantastic Beats and Where to Find Them" film.

First up are chat themes, which were hidden in the code for Allo 2.0 and could be activated with root access. Now they are official, with a large variety of included themes to choose from. You can also use the monochrome mode in Allo 2.0 to make reading messages a bit easier.

ZTE Grand X 4 for Cricket Wireless launches Friday with 13MP camera

Posted: 16 Nov 2016 09:06 AM PST

ZTE has a new Android smartphone coming down the pipe, and Cricket Wireless subscribers on the hunt for a new device may want to give it a look.

The new Grand X 4 from ZTE will officially launch for Cricket on Friday, November 18. It features a 5.5-inch 720p display, with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor under the hood along with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage. The microSD card slot can support a card up to 64GB, and the Grand X 4 is running Android 6.0.1. There is a 13MP camera on the back, a 5MP front-facing camera, a 3140mAh battery and a USB Type-C port.

Cricket will price the ZTE Grand X 4 at $129.99.

The Grand X 4 doesn't sound like a bad phone at all, and it's at least a respectable upgrade from the Grand X 3.

T-Mobile announces Black Friday deals

Posted: 16 Nov 2016 08:11 AM PST

T-Mobile, the nation's third largest wireless carrier, has announced its Black Friday deals for 2016. Notably, T-Mobile is beginning its deals a week earlier than the traditional date in order to create its own Magenta Friday promotion. Magenta Friday allows customers to add two additional lines to a four-person T-Mobile One plan at no additional cost per month. This offer is available between November 18 and November 20 and is open to both new and existing customers.

Here's the rundown on T-Mobile's Black Friday deals:

  • Free Samsung Galaxy S7 after 24 monthly bill credits when customers trade in a Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy Note 5, or LG G5.
  • Customers who purchase a Galaxy S7 (including the free one in the offer above) or Galaxy S7 edge are eligible to receive a free Samsung Gear VR and a $50 Oculus app store gift card.
  • Free Samsung Tab E or LG G Pad X after 24 monthly bill credits when using T-Mobile's ONE tablet plan.
  • $70 off of the UE Boom 2 wireless speaker
  • $30 off of the LG Tone Pro 760 Bluetooth headset
  • $50 off of the Mophie Powerstation Mini

T-Mobile's deals represent a change of pace from last year, when the carrier directly targeted each of its competitors with different deals. This year has more traditional offerings, with deals that should appease customers while edging the carrier away from its hefty deals in the past. It's expected that T-Mobile will continue to announce deals throughout the holiday season as it works to lure customers away from its competitors.

Popular Google Play Store App Found To Be Plagued With Malware

Posted: 16 Nov 2016 06:37 AM PST

switch-between-social-accounts

Once upon a time a Google security chief said Android was as safe as iOS. Unless you install the Multiple Accounts: 2 Accounts app on your Droid.

According to a Russian security firm, the app Dr. Web comes bundled with a nasty surprise – a malware family codenamed Androd.MulDrop.

The researchers who made the discovery say that the malware will bring up unwanted ads and will even download apps without the users' permission then prompts them to start the installation promise.

Multiple Accounts: 2 Accounts is a Chinese app that allows users to stay logged into two different accounts at the same time. It's useful for gaming or gives users access to two mail inboxes without having to switch between them.

The app appears to have between 1 and 5 million active installs at the moment, which is pretty alarming. Unlike other applications in the Play Store, Dr. Web says this app is not straightforward about showcasing in-app ads. The malware is apparently tucked deep inside the two JAR files living within a PNG image called icon.png.

Android.MulDrop's malicious activities are unleashed after a series of plugins are downloaded on the Android device. Android MulDrop uses one of the most dangerous Android Trojans, Android.Triada.99 to root devices in order to download apps without the user's knowledge.

Interestingly, the Russian security firm notes that there haven't be any cases of Android.MulDrop distribution via the Google Play Store, until now. Usually the malware made it on devices which installed apps from third-party app stores.

WhatsApp Finally Gets Free Video Calling Feature

Posted: 16 Nov 2016 06:17 AM PST

whatsapp-voice-calling

Not so long ago we told you WhatsApp was testing video calling in beta. Well now it seems the messaging app is officially rolling out the stable feature to users around the world.

Video calling for WhatsApp is now live in Canada as Android and iOS apps have been updated.

To get to use the feature just access your Contacts list and there should be a new Call icon next to the regular calling one. Just tap it and you should be connected to the other party.

video-calling-in-whatsapp

In the official launch statement, WhatsApp says Video calling has been the most requested user feature, so the company finally obliged, although it took its sweet time to do so.

WhatsApp made a point in saying that it wants all users to take advantage of the new feature, even if they are on a slower connection or own an older device. The optimized feature will boost WhatsApp's appeal in emerging markets like India or Brazil, where users heavily rely on the free messaging app.

WhatsApp's video calling feature was long overdue, with the competition being ahead already. Apple has been offering its popular FaceTime feature for a while, while Skype has this option available.

Todoist enlists artificial intelligence to help you schedule your tasks

Posted: 16 Nov 2016 06:06 AM PST

todoist-smart-schedule

Most of my Todoist tasks are pharmacy orders that don't have a due date but that I attend to whenever suppliers call or drop by. However, I also use the service to stay on top of urgent orders and patient questions that I need to address as well as to manage my personal to-dos. The latter are the tasks that end up getting rescheduled day after day until I'm either bored and I remove the due date or I'm so sick of seeing them pop up that I decide to get them done.
