Google Punishes Pixel Resellers By Banning Their Accounts Temporarily

Posted: 18 Nov 2016 12:05 PM PST

google-pixel-and-pixel-xl

Consider this a warning. Be careful when you purchase the Pixel or Pixel XL off Google's own Project Fi. It appears more than 200 users have been banned by the search giant from using their accounts, on suspicion of re-selling the phones in order to make profit.

According to Google's terms of service, this kind of activity is not allowed. A few hundred people bought Pixel phones only to send them to a third-party re-seller based in New Hampshire – a state which has no sales tax. Which means original buyers sold the Pixels for a profit.

Google didn't like that one bit and so it banned users from using their accounts and other Google apps for photos, music etc, reports Dan Deal's.

Following the event, Google sent out a statement saying:

"We identified a scheme in which consumers were asked to purchase Pixel devices on behalf of a reseller, who then marked-up the cost of those devices in order to resell them to other customers. We prohibit the commercial resale of devices purchased through Project Fi or the Google Store so everyone has an equal opportunity to purchase devices at a fair price. Many of the accounts suspended were created for the sole purpose of this scheme, but since some customers were not aware of these Terms of Sale and are now locked out of many Google services they rely on, we're restoring access to these customers' accounts."

The good news is that after being flooded with complaints from affected users, Google has decided to reverse the decision. But not without warning users that "repeated violations of our terms may lead to account termination." So watch out people, you don't want to get Google angry.

Good news for Nokia fans who are just dying to see a new smartphone from the company. It appears the Finish phone maker that got absorbed by Microsoft, just confirmed its next-gen handsets are coming our way in 2017.

The info popped up in a slide during Nokia's Capital Markets Day 2016 – an event hosted by the company for investors. As you can see, one of the slides says that 2017 will be year of "Nokia brand's return to smartphones."

In case you don't remember not Nokia will be manufacturing the phones per-se, but Finnish company HMD Global in collaboration with Foxconn.

Not so long ago, a few images showcasing Nokia's purported Android 7.0 Nougat smartphones appeared online. The images reveal the handsets will take advantage of a premium metallic design.

Like it's customary today, Nokia is apparently preparing to launch two smartphones, one with 5.2-inch display and the other with a larger 5.5-inch screen just like the Google Pixel XL.

The phones are said to come with a Snapdragon 820 which is a bit strange given that the Snapdragon 835 has been announced and is expected to make into devices in 2017.

The phones might also benefit from the presence of an update version of the Z Launcher and a fingerprint scanner embedded in the home button.

Samsung’s Tizen OS Gains Microsoft.NET Support

Posted: 18 Nov 2016 12:05 PM PST

tizen-and-microsoft-equals-love

Samsung wants developers to build apps for its home-grown Tizen OS. The mobile operating system designed for affordable smartphones and tablets has a limited app ecosystem. But Samsung aims to change that.

The Korean tech giant has announced it will start a collaboration with Microsoft on open source projects such as .NET Core and Xamarin.Forms in order to bring .NET support for Tizen.

It's pretty good news for users who like Tizen OS and believe the mobile OS has a chance of becoming quite wide-spread. The first preview of Visual Studio Tools for Tizen is already available, so .NET developers can go ahead and start building Tizen apps for multiple platforms such as Smart TVs, smartwatches and loT devices.

Visual Studio Tools for Tizen brings support for mobile application development via device emulators and an extension to Visual Studio with IntelliSense and debugging capabilities.

If it sounds quite exciting that because it is. Samsung said that users can expect to see Tizen .NET support coming embedded in consumer Samsung devices including Smart TVs in 2017.

It would be interesting to see if 2017 will also bring about a higher specced Tizen OS phone. Although the OS has been designed with budget products in mind, it might be useful to see how Tizen feels and behaves on a higher-end handset.

In late October, Samsung made the Blue Coral Galaxy S7 edge officially official, showing it off with a mermaid just because Samsung can do that.

Soon after, Samsung began offering it to the general public, but for folks under the T-Mobile banner in the United States, waiting turned out to be a good thing. There had been rumors that the Un-carrier would be getting the new color option, but only now is it official.

T-Mobile is now offering the Galaxy S7 edge in Blue Coral for $69.99 down, followed by 24 monthly payments of $30 after that. It retails for $789.99. Other than the color option, the Galaxy S7 edge in Blue Coral is exactly the same phone as the Gold Platinum and Silver Titanium color options.

The Blue Coral option for the Galaxy S7 edge is also available from Verizon Wireless.

Do you plan on picking up the new phone from T-Mobile?

Nexar turns any Android phone into an always-on dashcam

Posted: 18 Nov 2016 09:59 AM PST

image (1)A dashcam is one of those things that seems only slightly important until about five minutes after a fender-bender, wherein it becomes retroactively essential. Even so, those dashboard-mounted cameras don't grown on trees, so most cars in the US still aren't equipped with them. Nexar, a new Android app that's currently in "unreleased" status on the Play Store, aims to fix that. It turns any Android device into an AI-powered dash cam - all you need is Android 4.1 or later, a rear camera, and some way to mount it in your vehicle.

Nest update adds Android TV support, clip saving and sharing

Posted: 18 Nov 2016 06:59 AM PST

Saving and sharing video clips should be one of the rudimentary features of any connected camera system, so I'm surprised Nest didn't have that option until now. But now it does and it works in two ways. You can create an "instaclip" of any recorded event in your Nest timeline, but you can also tap and hold on the icon to make a custom clip with your chosen start and end times.

nyt-crossword

The first and last time I attempted to solve a crossword was on a 12-hour flight from Amman to Chicago where I just couldn't sleep or do anything else. I love word and math games, but for some reason, crosswords never really hit the right spot for me, so I just gloss over them when I come across one. But I know a lot of people who absolutely dig crosswords. And for them, the New York Times is the epitome of puzzles.
