Android security director says the Pixel is just as secure as the iPhone

Posted: 02 Nov 2016 03:14 PM PDT

It's a common misconception that Android is not secure. That might have been true in the past, but Google has been working hard to secure its operating system. With APIs coming to Android devices without software updates on old software and new security layers, Android is very secure.

Adrian Ludwig, director of security at Android, recently spoke about how secure Android is these days. He claims that widespread attacks are very unlikely. Even when Stagefright was discovered to affect most Android devices, he says, "At this point we still don't have any confirmed instances of exploitation in the wild."And when it comes to malware in general, less than 1% of all Android devices have malware, which includes "Potentially Harmful Applications."

He's so confident that he says that the Google Pixel is just as secure as an iPhone, and that Android as a whole will soon be even better. People don't have anything significant to worry about, though you should always use caution and common sense downloading and installing things. Stick to the Play Store and you should be fine!

Wileyfox announces Swift 2 and Swift 2 Plus devices for the UK market

Posted: 02 Nov 2016 03:14 PM PDT

Wileyfox is a UK smartphone manufacturer that just announced two new smartphones. The Swift 2 and Swift 2 Plus are budget phones that are very similar, but the Plus gets you some better specs in a few key areas.

The Swift 2 features a 5-inch 720p display, an octa-core Snapdragon 430 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of memory with a microSD slot, a 13MP Samsung camera sensor in the rear, an 8MP camera up front, a 2,700 mAh battery, and CyanogenMod 13.1 based on Marshmallow.

Despite the budget specs, the device is aiming to be more "premium" than it really is. It has an aluminum body with aluminum etched buttons, a fingerprint scanner, NFC, a USB Type-C port with Quick Charge 3.0, and a beefy speaker.

The Swift 2 Plus upgrades the 13MP camera to a 16MP Samsung ISOCELL sensor, 2GB of RAM to 3GB, and 16GB of memory to 32GB. Otherwise, it's the same device.

The devices look to be great for people on a budget who want a device that feels premium. The Swift 2 will go for £159 ($196) and the Swift 2 Plus will go for £189 ($233). They're available to purchase in the UK right now in the source links. How many of you are interested in the devices?

Fix is Adobe's latest 'Photoshop' app, focused on easy portrait editing

Posted: 02 Nov 2016 02:40 PM PDT

2016-11-02 21.22Remember when Adobe at least pretended it was making a "real" version of Photoshop for Android? That was nice. Now we have no less than four "Photoshop" apps - Photoshop Express, Photoshop Mix, Photoshop Sketch, and the new Photoshop Fix. Separating and dumbing down the program's functions into bite-sized mobile experiences makes a certain kind of sense, but as someone who's been using the desktop program for half his life, I can't help but be annoyed at the nebulous branding.

Brave Software changes app name back to Link Bubble, releases separate tabbed Brave Browser

Posted: 02 Nov 2016 02:25 PM PDT

unnamed

Brave Software acquired Link Bubble from developer Chris Lacy a few years back, aiming to turn it into a friendlier ad-blocking browser. The name was eventually changed to Brave, but now the owners are reversing course. It's Link Bubble again, and there's a more conventional browser app available called Brave. Yeah, it's kind of a mess.

The thing that always set Link Bubble apart is that it loads pages in floating bubbles that sit in the background.

Niantic wants you to play Pokémon GO again, so instead of fixing the tracker it's adding daily rewards

2016-11-02 20.52.39It's been about four months since Pokémon GO's initial release. While we don't have any current data on its active players, it reached the 100 million download mark in less than two months, so it's safe to say that it's extremely popular... at least initially. It's also safe to say, based on the rapid drop in social mentions and visible GO players here in California, that the initial excitement has dropped off.

Uber overhauls its app, focuses on the destination

Celebrate, Uber riders! The ride-sharing service has announced that it is overhauling its aging app. Gone will be the overly complicated navigation (they said it, not me) — instead, the app will be cleaner, smoother, and faster. Uber even states that it will be rebuilt from the ground up. The redesign focuses on the question of "Where to?" Since we all use Uber to, you know, get somewhere.

The first new part of the overhaul is "shortcuts." The premise is that for frequent Uber riders, the app will predict where you are heading.

Support Ended for Eclipse Android Developer Tools

Posted: 02 Nov 2016 12:46 PM PDT

By Jamal Eason, Product Manager, Android

With the release of Android Studio 2.2, the time has now come to say goodbye to the Eclipse Android Developer Tools. We have formally ended their support and development. There's never been a better time to switch to Android Studio and experience the improvements we've made to the Android development workflow.

Android Studio

Android Studio, the official IDE for Android, features powerful code editing with advanced code-completion and refactoring. It includes robust static analysis, bringing the intelligence of the Android engineering team to you to help you easily apply Android coding best practices, and includes simultaneous debugging in both Java and C++ to help fix any bugs that slip through. When you combine this with performance tooling, a fast, flexible build system, code templates, GitHub integration, and its high-performance, feature-rich emulator, you get a deeply Android-tailored development environment for the many form factors of the OS. It's the development environment used by 92% of the top 125 Google Play apps and games, and we're constantly innovating it to handle every Android development need.

What's New in Android Studio 2.2

Android Studio 2.2 builds on the great features from Android Studio 2.0. There are over twenty new features that improve development whether you are designing, iterating, or testing. Notable changes include:

  • Instant Run - The super-fast iteration engine now is both more reliable and available for more types of changes
  • Layout Editor - The new user interface designer that makes it easier than ever to create beautiful app experiences
  • Constraint Layout - A new flexible layout engine for building dynamic user interfaces - designed to work with the new layout editor
  • C++ Support - CMake and ndk-build are now supported alongside improved editing and debug experiences
  • APK Analyzer - Inspects APKs to help you streamline your APK and debug multi-dex issues
  • GPU Debugger (beta) - Captures a stream of OpenGL ES commands and replays them with GPU state inspection
  • Espresso Test Recorder (beta) - Records interactions with your app and outputs UI test code
Top Developers Love Android Studio

For our ADT Fans

All of your favorite ADT tools are now part of Android Studio, including DDMS, Trace Viewer, Network Monitor, and CPU Monitor. We've also improved Android Studio's accessibility, including keyboard navigation enhancements and screen reader support.

We announced that we were ending development and official support for the Android Developer Tools (ADT) in Eclipse at the end of 2015, including the Eclipse ADT plugin and Android Ant build system. With the latest updates to Studio, we've completed the transition.

Migrating to Android Studio

To get started, download and install Android Studio. For most developers, including those with C/C++ projects, migration is as simple as importing your existing Eclipse ADT projects in Android Studio with the File > New > Import Project menu option. For more details on the migration process, check out the migration guide.

Feedback and Open Source Contributions

We're dedicated to making Android Studio the best possible integrated development environment for building Android apps, so if there are missing features or other challenges preventing you from switching to Android Studio, we want to hear about it [survey] ! You can also file bugs or feature requests directly with the team, and let us know via our Twitter or Google+ accounts.

Android Studio is an open source project, available to all at no cost. Check out our Open Source project page if you're interested in contributing or learning more.

Development on the Android Wear platform has stumbled a bit as the official 2.0 release has been delayed until early 2017. That doesn't mean the companion app can't continue to get updates. A fresh beta build of v2.0 came out a couple of days ago with a couple small tweaks to remove one of the little annoying things about the Bluetooth pairing process. The teardown also reveals a couple of interesting additions related to standalone apps and the Wear-specific Play Store.

TeamViewer 12 adds mobile-to-mobile remote control, faster performance

Due to lack of any official remote control API in Android (for obvious security reasons), the feature is limited to devices that support TeamViewer's implementation. This includes select devices from Samsung, Sony, Acer, Lenovo, HTC, LG, and more (full list here).

Xiaomi Mi MIX Drops To The Floor, Shatters Horribly

Posted: 02 Nov 2016 10:52 AM PDT

xiaomi-mi-max-broken

The stunning Xiaomi Mi MIX isn't even out yet and someone already dropped it on the floor. According to a report coming out of Xiaomi Today, someone at the Xiaomi store was probably trying out the device when the accident happened.

Given that we're dealing with a 91.3% screen-to-body ratio smartphone, we were expecting the device to be a little sensible. The Xiaomi Mi MIX did come out of the experience pretty shaken up. The screen broke and the ceramic body was damaged as well. We should note here that the massive 6.4-inch display does not come equipped with Corning Gorilla Glass, which right now seems like a big mistake from Xiaomi's part.

xiaomi-mi-mix-edgeless

The edge-to-edge phone comes bosting QHD resolution, a Snapdragon 821 chipset working hand in hand with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. There's also a 16MP/5MP camera combo and a hefty 4,400 mAh battery.

If you were thinking of getting the Xiaomi Mi MIX, we recommend you also look into buying a protective case. Or at least sign up for Xiaomi's Accident Insurance which will cost you $36.90 (CAD$ 49.52).

The Xiaomi Mi MIX is expected to go on sale on Friday. The first flash sale will make available just 10,000 units. Another 10,000 phones will be offered next month.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Tipped to Feature Virtual Assistant “Bixby”

Posted: 02 Nov 2016 10:52 AM PDT

samsung-galaxy-s8-concept

After the major Galaxy Note7 fiasco, Samsung needs to make sure its upcoming Galaxy S8 device will be a flawless smartphone.

We already told you what the rumour mill has been claiming recently – the Galaxy S8 might be the first to make it out into the world with an optical fingerprint scanner onboard, which is pretty impressive.

Well the latest information coming out of Sam Mobile seems to indicate that Samsung might be following the footsteps of Apple, Microsoft and Google and offer a virtual assistant service on the Galaxy S8.

patent-application-for-bixby

It appears that the Korean tech giant has filed a trademark in South Korea for something called "Bixby". Reading the application, we discover that Bixby is a "computer application software for smartphones, mobile telephones, portable computers and tablet computers. Namely, software used to operate voice recognition system". Other snippets from the application reveal other specifics such as a "computer software for enabling hands-free use of a mobile phone through voice recognition."

At this point we can't be 100% positive that the intelligent assistant onboard the Galaxy S8 will be called Bixby – it is an odd name, but then again so is Cortana. Anyway, we're still months away from the Galaxy S8 being unveiled at MWC 2017 in Barcelona, so lots could change until now.
