Samsung France takes Note 7 apology one step further, sends 128GB microSD cards to previous owners

Posted: 23 Nov 2016 03:28 PM PST

Samsung has apologized and offered refunds and gift cards to all Galaxy Note 7 owners, but apparently that wasn't enough for some of Samsung's regional branches.

Samsung France is sending letters with another apology to former Note 7 owners. Inside the letter is a 128GB microSD card, which is a great touch on Samsung's part. There's also info on a contest the company is running.

Samsung France is sending 1,000 people to the Samsung Life Changer Park, a virtual reality amusement park in Paris. The contest tasks people with texting Samsung when it starts, and the first 1,000 people to text back win. Samsung will cover the transportation to Paris if you win.

It's good to see Samsung further making it up to people, as the Note 7 fiasco was a big problem for both customers and the company. Maybe other regional branches will follow suit.

Google offering 4-month free trial of Google Play Music, YouTube Red included

Posted: 23 Nov 2016 02:18 PM PST

Google is now offering a longer free trial for Google Play Music than usual. You can try the service for free for four months, which includes the unlimited music streaming as well as offline and ad-free YouTube courtesy of the YouTube Red subscription you get with it.

The deal should only be valid to new customers that have not tried Google Play Music before, but it's worth a try anyway, as some people get lucky. It's also only valid in the US, so keep that in mind as well.

After the four months end, you'll start being charged $9.99 a month. It's easily worth it, but if you don't like the service enough to justify it, make sure to cancel the subscription before then. Set a reminder!

Microsoft brings Windows 10 Solitaire game to Android, ads included

Posted: 23 Nov 2016 02:18 PM PST

Windows is famous for a few things. It's the most used computer operating system in the world and it includes some sweet games like Solitaire and Minesweeper. The included Windows games were a significant part of many people's lives.

Things are a bit different with Windows 10. Some games like Solitaire are now ad-supported, but they're prettier and come with many more features. And for some reason, Microsoft decided to bring Solitaire to Android.

The game is still ad-supported, but you can get rid of ads for $1.99 a month or $9.99 a year. Obviously paying for an ad-free subscription is crazy for a solitaire game, especially with so many other options, but the game starts free and doesn't show ads for the first month. Hit the source link and let us know what you think!

Sprint offers up to three free lines on Black Friday

Posted: 23 Nov 2016 12:18 PM PST

T-Mobile and Sprint are once again duking it out in terms of deals this holiday season. T-Mobile just unveiled its biggest Black Friday offer, and now Sprint is looking to one-up its rival by offering customers up to three free lines on its Unlimited Freedom plan. Customers who switch at least one line to Sprint's Unlimited Freedom plan can receive their third, fourth, and fifth lines free, bringing the price to just $20 per line, per month for a family of five. That's five lines for $100/month, though the price for the third, fourth and fifth lines does increase to $30/month  after January 31, 2018.

This price is significantly less than other carriers during its promotional period, with a T-Mobile equivalent plan priced at $160/month and an AT&T equivalent priced at $220/month. It is worth noting the increase in price after the promotional period, however. This price increase leads to customers only saving a modest amount in the long run, with the major savings front-loaded.

For more details, check out Sprint's announcement at the source link below.

T-Mobile offering free flagship smartphones with trade-ins for Black Friday

Posted: 23 Nov 2016 11:28 AM PST

Beginning tomorrow, November 24, and lasting through Sunday evening, T-Mobile is getting into Black Friday with its latest promotion, which offers customers a free flagship smartphone (after 24 monthly credits) when they trade in a qualified device. The devices available are the Samsung Galaxy S7 (32GB), Samsung Galaxy S7 edge (32GB) LG V20 (64GB), iPhone 7 (32GB), and iPhone 7 Plus (32GB). If customers don't meet the threshold for a free flagship with their trade-in, they can also purchase the flagships at a deep discount depending on which device they trade in. One caveat is that the new smartphone must be used on a T-Mobile One or Simple Choice Unlimited plan.

In addition, T-Mobile is offering $200 to customers who switch a line. The offer is good for up to 12 lines on a single account.

To round things off, T-Mobile is teaming up with Gogo to offer travelers one free hour of in-flight Wi-Fi on Gogo-equipped domestic flights. This offer is valid between today, November 23 and Saturday, November 26, and is open to customers on other carriers as well, in an effort to entice customers to switch to T-Mobile.

Glossy Black Samsung Galaxy S7 edge shown off in new photos

Posted: 23 Nov 2016 10:28 AM PST

A recent rumor suggested that Samsung planned to revitalize the Galaxy S7 brand by launching a new color option in December called "Jet Black", which would directly compete with Apple's own Jet Black iPhone 7. Without the Galaxy Note 7 to buoy sales leading into 2017, Samsung also hopes to keep folks interested in its other flagships.

Glossy Black Galaxy S7x2

Now, thanks to a Samsung official posting to Weibo, we get to see the first images of what is being called the "Glossy Black" Galaxy S7 edge. The device is certainly eye-catching in its shiny new coat of paint, but there's no word on whether or not the new model is prone to scratching like Apple's Jet Black iPhone 7 is.

While we're now getting to see the handset in the wild, in admittedly less-than-flattering photos, we still don't know its launch date or where it'll be available. The initial rumor said December, so we might not have long to wait to find out.

What do you think of the Glossy Black Galaxy S7 edge?

Your next growth market: Realizing the potential of MENA

Posted: 23 Nov 2016 10:18 AM PST

Posted by Mohammad El-Saadi, BD, Google Play

We know that many developers want to take advantage of growth opportunities in new regions, but are held back by not knowing the most important areas to focus on. That's why we wanted to share stories from our partners in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). It's a fast growing region for Google Play, and one that already represents a sizable revenue opportunity. They've shared their experiences, and some key things to focus on if you're thinking of launching in the region.

Middle East and North Africa overview

MENA is a diverse region in terms of disposable income, access to connectivity, and smartphone penetration. However, it is possible to broadly group MENA into two types of market:

Growth markets

  • Examples: Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait and the rest of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
  • Very high smartphone penetration (on par with top western european markets),
  • Large disposable income
  • Robust growth in spend on mobile apps and games

Emerging markets

  • Examples: Morocco, Egypt and Iraq.
  • Large populations
  • Significant growth in smartphone (primarily Android) adoption.

Opportunities

Localization

If you want to be successful in MENA, localization is key. In Saudi Arabia 19 of the top 20 grossing apps & games have their Google Play Store listing localized and the majority of those have their actual app/game localized as well. By localizing to Arabic, mobile app and game developers have found great success in the region.

When Singapore-based Wego.com localized to Arabic, they achieved over 200% YoY growth in MENA, grew their app rating from 3.5 to over 4.5 among Arab travelers and increased Arab users' retention rates by 200%. Today, MENA represents over 65% of their users.

To do localization well, here are a few things to consider:

  • Localize your store listing into Arabic including your video, screenshots and text. If you are targeting specific countries within MENA consider using local dialects, otherwise use formal Arabic. Consider using Store Listing Experiments to optimize your listing for local audiences.
  • If applicable, flip your app/game UI to be right-to-left.
  • Beware of common issues when localizing to Arabic: Arabic letters appearing disjointed or showing up in reverse order and the ordering of words getting mixed up when sentences contain both Latin and Arabic words
  • Localize pricing by showing appropriate local currency and rounding. Note that different countries in MENA have different currencies and affordability/willingness to pay.
  • Plan around major local events such as the holy month of Ramadan, when after fasting from dawn to sunset, families and loved ones gather for meals, laughs and stories. We've found that during this month usage of apps and games increases significantly in MENA.
  • Provide local customer support
  • Be culturally sensitive in your communication and content - avoid stereotypes and keep in mind the relatively conservative nature of users in the region
  • Leverage the power of YouTube to reach your audiences in MENA. Saudi Arabia for instance is the second largest market for YouTube globally in terms of views per capita.

Refer to our Localization Checklist for some best practices when localizing for any language.

Gaming

Gaming is a high growth and revenue opportunity in MENA. Most countries in the region have a median age of 30 or lower, smartphone growth will continue to grow at double digits, which makes gaming a key segment for users in the region. Today's local top grossing charts and dominated by Midcore strategy games. Interestingly, GCC countries have some of the highest Average Revenue Per Paying User rates globally.

International titles, including Clash of Clans, Clash Royale, Mobile Strike and Clash of Kings, have performed incredibly well in the region. In addition, titles specifically targeting MENA have also seen tremendous success. Revenge of the Sultans, by ONEMT, from China, has been the top grossing title across several MENA countries for many months. Similarly, when IGG.com launched the Arabic version of Castle Clash, they grew revenue from MENA by 58% within 4 months.

As the market evolves, there is also a huge opportunity for other genres (such as RPG, FPS, and sports) which are not present at scale in the region yet.

Google Play in MENA

We continue to invest in making sure that users are able to pay for their favorite apps and games by launching locally relevant payment methods in MENA. Today, we have carrier billing available with the major networks in Saudi Arabia, UAE and Kuwait. We plan to expand coverage in more countries, including Qatar and Bahrain, in the future.

We are also committed to increasing the quality and availability of Arabic apps and games for MENA users, which is why we launched our Now in Arabic collectionfeaturing apps and games that have recently localized to Arabic. This collection will be regularly updated. If you're interested in being included, submit your localized app/game.

The new version offered more game modes, as well as achievements and cloud saves through Xbox Live, but famously included banner and full-screen advertisements unless you paid for the Premium edition.

Google has released one final update to the Android 7.1 Developer Preview

Posted: 23 Nov 2016 08:23 AM PST

Though Android 7.0 Nougat is just beginning to make its way onto phones, Google is already preparing the next version of its popular Android operating system. Android 7.1 is in its Developer Preview phase, and Google has released one final update to the Developer Preview before it's ready to go for the mainstream.

This version includes the latest bug fixes and optimization with near-final behaviors and UI tweaks. This allows developers to begin testing and updating apps for compatibility with Android 7.1 Nougat. Other than these behind-the-scenes moves, this version is largely the same as the previous Developer Preview. The wait won't be long now, as Google expects to begin rolling out the update by mid-December.

Verizon begins Black Friday deals on Google Home and Pixel

Posted: 23 Nov 2016 08:23 AM PST

Verizon has announced two of its major Black Friday deals which feature sales on Google's new entries in the market. Google Home, the search giant's voice-powered home assistant, is available through Verizon for $99.99, today, November 23, through Monday, November 28. This is a discount from the regular price of $129.99, and Google is still offering six free months of YouTube Red to purchasers of Google Home.

Verizon is also offering a sale on the Google Pixel. On November 24 and 25, Verizon customers can get a 32GB Pixel or Pixel XL for just $10/month, with the 128GB model priced at $15/month. Additionally, through Sunday, customers can receive $200 off any smartphone priced $400 or higher when adding a line or switching to Verizon. Upgrading Verizon customers can take advantage of a $100 price cut.

This is a solid set of deals, notable because of its emphasis on Google products, which don't often receive major deals. And as far as discounts on the Pixel go, this will likely be the lowest price available this holiday season. If you've been thinking about pulling the trigger, now is the time.

Niantic adds Ditto to Pokémon Go, tweaks 'Nearby' feature and brings it to more regions

Niantic has been taking flack ever since it removed the tracking feature in Pokémon GO a few days after launch. Then the developer started to roll out a new feature, named 'Nearby,' which showed Pokémon if they were near to Pokéstops. After feedback from users, that has now been tweaked a little, and a slightly larger roll out.

The new, improved "Nearby" feature will only appear if you are close to a Pokéstop.

Version 7.0 of the phone app for Nexus and Pixel devices has arrived, with... you guessed it, no major changes at all. There are some minor updates and re-workings, but this one most likely will not blow your socks off.

Firstly, a 'block/report spam' option has been added to the long press dialog in the call log - in previous versions, only 'Copy number' and 'Edit number before call' were present.
