Samsung Galaxy Note 5 getting Grace UX update in South Korea

Posted: 28 Nov 2016 03:24 PM PST

Grace UX is a new version of TouchWiz that debuted on the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. While that device was troublesome, its user interface was well-received and considered an improvement over Samsung's previous versions of TouchWiz.

Now the Galaxy Note is getting that new interface. The Note 5 is now receiving an update in South Korea with the new Grace UX in tow, though it's based on Marshmallow rather than Nougat. Still, a new interface is a big update.

Nougat is still coming to the Note 5, so don't worry about that. The Grace UX update isn't a replacement for the latest version of Android. You're also getting stability improvements and bug fixes with the update. It's rolling out in stages, so if you own a Note 5 in South Korea, check for updates in Settings > About phone and let us know if you get it!

DJI GO 4 offers a new UI and fresh editing capabilities for drone pilots

Posted: 28 Nov 2016 03:22 PM PST

djiDJI, purveyor of premium-brand drones to the poor and the gentry, has a new app on the Play Store. It's a companion app for the recent entries in the company's lineup, mostly focused on the built-in still and video cameras. The app has a livestreaming function (but not remote control) and editing built in. But something odd is going on here: why is version four of the GO app getting a separate listing on the Play Store, despite the fact that both of them are free?

Sling TV introduces recording with a closed beta for its Cloud DVR service

Posted: 28 Nov 2016 02:47 PM PST

MyDVR2While Sling TV makes a pretty compelling offering for those who want to ditch expensive conventional television service, its all-live setup is something of a bummer - recording has become so ingrained in the premium TV mindset that it's hard to give up. The company is rectifying that shortcoming with Cloud DVR, a (wait for it) DVR service that uses cloud storage to hold recorded TV episodes and other content.

Samsung Pay on the Gear S3 not working when paired with Pixel

Posted: 28 Nov 2016 02:25 PM PST

Samsung Pay is a mobile payment service much like Android Pay (though with no need for an NFC terminal, which is a big plus) that's restricted to Samsung devices. However, one way of getting Samsung Pay without a Samsung phone was to pick up the Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch.

The watch has Samsung Pay support built-in when paired with any device. That is, unless it's a Google Pixel. For some reason, the payment service won't work when the watch is paired with a Pixel, even though it works with other non-Samsung devices like the LG V20.

If you're planning to pick up a Gear S3 specifically for paying for things with your wrist and you own a Pixel, you might want to wait until the issue is fixed (although Samsung claims Pay isn't compatible with Pixel devices, so it may never be officially fixed).

Unlocked HTC 10 now getting Nougat update in the US

Posted: 28 Nov 2016 01:29 PM PST

HTC has announced that the unlocked variant of the HTC 10 is now receiving the update to Android 7.0 Nougat in the US. You should now be seeing the update roll out, though like with all rollouts, it might take some time to get to you.

The Nougat update brings lots of new features like an improved Doze mode, better notifications with quick replies, split screen mode, and a lot more. It's definitely a nice update to an already great device.

If you have an HTC 10, head to Settings > About to check for updates! And if you have a carrier model of the HTC 10 or HTC One M9, you should see your Android 7.0 update early next year.

Flo Smart Thermometer blends technology and health

Posted: 28 Nov 2016 01:29 PM PST

Hearken back to the days of childhood. You're at school, you don't feel well, and so you head to the nurse's office. Nine times out of 10, one of the first things to happen is the nurse will take your temperature. Depending on the school, the thermometer might vary, but generally it would be an oral or ear thermometer covered by a plastic sheath to prevent transfer of germs.

While accurate, these thermometers are neither pleasant nor efficient. A fever is one of the simplest ways to identify a health issue, yet children hate to have their temperature checked. The thermometers are uncomfortable, and depending on the age or model, may take quite a bit of time to accurately determine the temperature. There are the additional concerns of waste and safety on top of that. Each time a temperature is checked, a new disposable cover is used and then thrown away. As for safety, you simply have to hope that the plastic cover does its job and that contaminants don't make their way onto the thermometer with a simple cough or sneeze.

Imagine a thermometer that never has to come into contact with the patient. A thermometer that is instant, reliable and beyond simple to use. While such a thermometer may sound like a pipe dream, it's already in existence, and its name is Flo.

Flo is made by Zeraph and uses infrared and Bluetooth to accomplish its purpose. The device is small and incredibly straightforward, with just a single button and LED indicator. For a quick read, users can simply hold Flo within one inch of the patient's forehead and the indicator will turn red if the patient has a fever or white if the patient is chilled. If the patient's temperature is in a normal range, the indicator will turn green.

Flo Smart Thermometer (2)

More features are unlocked using the accompanying app for Android or iOS. Flo easily connects through Bluetooth and an exact temperature reading is available within the app, along with the ability to log temperatures. Users can create different profiles and easily keep a log of temperatures, which is particularly useful when dealing with a chronic issue. Notes and photos can both be added to track additional symptoms that may have accompanied the changed temperature, allowing users to keep a log of symptoms to help their doctor better diagnose the issue.

Flo is geared at parents. The device is small and unintimidating, placing an emphasis on convenience. The battery life is rated for six months, with an easy-to-replace battery. And while Flo is perfect for parents, it could also be used on a larger scale in schools, daycares and other organizations that could benefit from a fast, hygienic thermometer.

After testing Flo, we found the device to deliver on its promises and work even better than expected. If you want a great blend of technology and health at an affordable price, Flo is your device.

Flo is now available for $49.99.

Sorry Folks, ASUS Zenfone 3 Deluxe No Longer Coming to Canada

Posted: 28 Nov 2016 10:30 AM PST

If you were hoping to get your hands on a flagship like the ASUS Zenfone 3 Deluxe, we're sorry to tell you the producing company is not bringing it to Canada anymore.

Previously ASUS said the phone will be available with Best Buy, Canada Computers, Memory Express, Newegg and Staples for $669 CAD a pop. Well it seems this is no longer the case.

According to the Android Community,  the Taiwanese device maker confirmed that the ZenFone 3 won't be launched in Canada anymore. ASUS didn't give any reasons for the decision.

In case you don't remember, the ASUS Zenfone 3 Deluxe was supposed to land with a spacious 5.7-inch display with 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution and Snapdragon 820 under the hood. The phone was supposed to make it out with a hefty 6GB of RAM onboard in combination with 64GB (expandable via microSD to 256GB).

The phone also has a 23MP main camera with laser/phase detection autofocus, OIS and dual-LED flash plus an 8MP selfie snapper.

Even if the Zenfone 3 Deluxe is no longer an option in Canada, customers can still grab a Zenfone 3 for $429.99 CAD a pop.

But if you really-really want the Deluxe variant, Amazon US is selling it, so you can grab it from there, although it's a watered down version.

LG G6 Rumored to Arrive with Iris Scanner, ‘LG Pay’

Posted: 28 Nov 2016 10:20 AM PST

With the G5, LG didn't exactly break any records. Granted, the phone is a decent device which offers a taste of modularity for people who were excited about the prospect of a Project Ara phone, but customers didn't really take to it.

Now LG is currently working on the successor of the G5, which is known in the rumor mill as the G6. The phone will probably make a debut during the Korea Electronics Show in October and LG hopes its next-gen flagship will be more on users' tastes.

A report coming out of the Korean Herald sheds some light on the upcoming LG G6. According to the current here say the LG G6 could end up featuring iris scanner. It means LG's next-gen flagship will offer a feature reminiscent the dearly departed Galaxy Note7.

Additionally, LG seems it is interested in jumping onboard the mobile payments system bandwagon. According to word on the street, the LG G6 will probably come equipped with a service akin to Samsung Pay. We could call it LG Pay at the moment.

Other device makers might also soon make the same plunge as well. Xiaomi's rumored Mi 5c is supposed to feature NFC, so maybe the phone will offer a similar service, lets call it Mi Pay.

Going back to the upcoming LG G6, the Korean Herald notes the phone will take advantage of a removable battery due to "issues of safety and yields" – obviously hinting towards the Galaxy Note7 debacle.
