If you're a car person, like me, you'll have been an avid fan of Top Gear - until the classic line up of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May departed for the big-budget 'The Grand Tour' on Amazon. The first episode aired almost three weeks ago now, but the three have something else in store: DriveTribe.

DriveTribe's concept is a little confusing at first. It's basically a series of forums - Tribes - with each one devoted to a specific car topic.

Google improving fake review detection on Play Store

Posted: 29 Nov 2016 02:38 PM PST

The Google Play Store is pretty secure, but fake reviews are still a problem (like they are across many services). Google is working hard to improve the review process and has announced that it has improved fake review detection.

Google says that if developers are using an agency to promote their app, that they should make sure the agency adheres to the Google Play Developer Policy, otherwise the reviews might be marked as fraudulent.

Hopefully this renewed effort will cut down on fake reviews that make poor apps look good. There are enough bad apps on the Play Store.

Facebook adds games to Messenger

Posted: 29 Nov 2016 02:38 PM PST

Facebook Messenger is getting better and better with every major update. Though some dismiss it as another part of Facebook, it has become a very competent and fully-featured messaging app.

facebook-messenger-games

The latest update adds an unexpected feature: video games. The chat service is adding games that people can play together, even in group chats. There are plenty of classic titles, like Pac-Man, and newer ones like Words with Friends.

The games will be available for both the iOS and Android apps and will roll out in 30 countries to start. This is definitely an exciting update to the app and I can't wait to give it a shot. Let us know what you think in the comments!

Vodafone announces Android 7.1.1 update for Nexus 6P

Posted: 29 Nov 2016 02:38 PM PST

Vodafone has put up a page for the next major software update for the Nexus 6P, and it's claiming that the update will be Android 7.1.1. The device currently has a developer preview for Android 7.1.1, but this should be the official update.

The update is scheduled to launch on December 6 at 5:00 PM Australian Eastern Standard Time and will include the December 5 security patches from Google. Interestingly, the build is labeled as NMF26F, which is older than the current developer preview. It might be a typo, or Vodafone might be entirely mistaken about the update.

If this is true, it's a good indication of when all modern Nexus devices will be getting this update. Keep an eye on the calendar!

Google Allo hit 5 million downloads in 5 days - two months later, its momentum seems utterly stalled

Posted: 29 Nov 2016 02:27 PM PST

nexus2cee_allo-shortcut

On September 28th, almost two months ago to the day, Allo co-lead Justin Uberti announced the app had achieved a staggering five-million downloads in just five days since its launch. It was impressive momentum, though not unexpected for a major Google app debut. Now, once at the top of the Play Store's app rankings, Allo sits below position #200, and shows few signs of momentum.

The app's download count remains at the 5,000,000-10,000,000 milestone it achieved back at the end of September, meaning that in over sixty days Allo has not managed to achieve again what it did in the first five it was available.

The Starz streaming video app now integrates with Spotify, for some reason

Posted: 29 Nov 2016 12:57 PM PST

starzStarz, the premium cable channel that offers movies and original series, now works with Spotify, the premium streaming music service. Which is... odd. An updated version of the Starz Android app now includes integrated streaming tracks from Spotify, all of which are either original music or soundtrack selections from those Starz series and movies. Apparently there are "more than 3,500" selections that are at least tangentially related to the Starz catalog.

Save up to 42% on the TP-Link and Asus OnHub smart routers

Posted: 29 Nov 2016 12:33 PM PST

Quite a few people are waiting for the launch of Google WiFi, but if you live in a small house of apartment, it may be the perfect time to pick up one of the OnHub smart routers.

With pre-orders of Google WiFi set to start shipping in early December, retailers have slashed the prices of the OnHub routers by up to 42%. The TP-Link and Asus OnHub routers sport much of the same functionality as Google WiFi, but they don't have mesh network capabilities. While that may sound like a huge downgrade, it only matters if you were planning on picking up multiple Google WiFi routers.

If you're not familiar with the functionality offered by OnHub routers, check out the video below. Those who need the increased coverage offered by Google WiFi's mesh network can pre-order the three-pack for $299.99

Microsoft's Clip Layer app lets you copy text from any screen by long-pressing the home button

Remember back in the early days of Android when it had copy and paste, and the iPhone didn't? Those were strange times. Copy and paste is just something you expect to be able to do now, but there are plenty of places in Android where the text isn't accessible. Microsoft's Clip Layer app aims to change that by binding a universal copy option to the home button.

When you trigger Clip Layer, it reads all the text on your screen, making it accessible for copying.

Anyone remember the days of playing those silly Facebook games? Since the world has changed quite radically since the heyday of Zynga, it feels like that era was so long ago. Perhaps in a bit of nostalgia or an urge to incite over-competitiveness among friends, Facebook has rolled out games within the Messenger app.

Games are started by hitting the controller in a conversation, then selecting which title to play. Upon finishing a round, the other person (or people) in the thread will see your score.

No, thank you for being a Wi-Fi-soaked escape from my rural family's home during the holidays - T-Mobile service is still crappy out there. And while I'm extending some holiday thanks, I might as well give a shout-out to Visa, which is giving Starbucks customers $10 of free credit via the Starbucks app. That's approximately 2.5 Frappuccinos.

Lyft begins showing ride totals before you request in select cities

Posted: 29 Nov 2016 11:52 AM PST

Ridesharing service Lyft has long had a disadvantage compared to Uber; it wouldn't show you an estimate of your ride total ahead of time. Now, the company is testing that feature in select cities across the US. The total isn't set in stone, but it should be accurate barring any unforeseen circumstances.

Lyft did not specify which cities were getting pre-ride totals, but it should be obvious if you are included in the test.

One of those is Timelapse, the ability to see certain places change as time moves forwards. Today, Google is updating Timelapse with petabytes of new data, four layers of imagery, and sharper pictures across the board.

Google Pixel Phone Sales Expected to Hit $5 Billion in 2017

Posted: 29 Nov 2016 10:43 AM PST

google-pixel

Google's latest phones, the Pixel and Pixel XL have received the thumbs from the Android community and reviewers alike. Yes, the Pixels sell very well, but how well you might be wondering?

According to research firm Morgan Stanley, Google is on track to sell about 3 million units by the end of the year, which translates roughly in about $2.69 CAD billion of revenue. As for next year, Google is expected to ship around 5-6 million phones or $5.11 CAD billion in cash.

It's a good start for the young Pixel family, which has replaced the more affordable Nexus dynasty. But to be fair, the Pixels have nothing on Samsung and Apple. Still in its infancy, Pixels can't compete with the 71 million smartphones sold by Samsung in Q3 or the 43 million units sold by Apple during the same period.

The Pixels are quite limited in availability at the moment, but next year the Pixel 2 might find itself on the shelves of multiple carriers. Also Google might want to re-think the pricing strategy if it wants to make even more money in 2017.

Morgan Stanley also notes that due to the high price of the materials used to make the Pixel, Google is cashing in about half of the profits. More profit is being generated by Android app and service purchases.

Typically Android users prefer free apps, but due to the deeper integration of Android Pay, Daydream View VR and Google Assistant, users are starting to pay more attention to paid apps as well.

Samsung’s Galaxy S8 Selfie Camera Rumoured to Boast Auto Focus

Posted: 29 Nov 2016 10:43 AM PST

the-next-galaxy

Samsung is working on the Galaxy S8, we all know that very well. The handset is rumoured to be among the first devices that will take advantage of a Snapdragon 835 processor.

But the phone will bring other perks to the table. According to the rumour mill, Samsung wants to implement an iris scanner on the Galaxy S8. The next-gen flagship will mark another first – it will come equipped with Samsung's virtual assistant dubbed Bixby. Although the rumor mill is whispering another assistant called Kestra will also be onboard.

Anyway, today's leak revolves around another part of the Galaxy S8 – the selfie camera. Front snappers are getting better and better these days with the OnePlus 3T featuring a 16MP one.

But the Galaxy S8 will add a feature that is rarely found in selfie cameras today. According to a report coming out of The Android Soul, the Galaxy S8 camera will feature autofocus. Unlike the usual VCM (Voice Coil Motor), the Galaxy S8 selfie camera will take advantage of encoder tech for Autofocus.

On top of implementing the autofocus function, the new tech will allow Samsung to make a slimmer, better looking Galaxy S8.

It is also expected that the Galaxy S8 will come bundled with Force Touch, a tech similar to the 3D touch on the iPhone. We can't wait for the Galaxy S8 to go live, can you?

LeEco phones and TVs expanding to U.S. retailers; free DirecTV Now offer for limited time

Posted: 29 Nov 2016 10:23 AM PST

In October, LeEco officially entered the U.S. market with two new smartphones: the Le Pro 3 and Le S3. However, availability for the devices was limited, as they were only available through LeEco's digital storefront.

That's changing beginning December 1. LeEco has confirmed that its smartphones will soon become available from several national retailers in the United States. That includes Best Buy, where the devices will be available both online and in brick-and-mortar locations, Target's website, and Amazon. On top of that, LeEco will be keeping its LeMall website's storefront open 24/7 from here on out.

LeEco will be offering its TVs in the same U.S. storefronts, too.

That's a big step for LeEco, to be sure, and it will be interesting to see how wider availability in the U.S. will impact its sales moving forward.

LeEco also confirmed a limited-time deal for the newly-revealed DirecTV Now from AT&T. If you pick up a qualifying LeEco-branded device between November 29 and January 5, you'll get free DirecTV Now service for a period of time:

  • 3 months of DirecTV Now free with the purchase of a Le Pro3, Le Pro3, or a Super4 X43 Pro ecotv
  • 6 months of DirecTV Now free with the purchase of a Super4 X55 or Super4 X65 ecotv
  • 12 months of DirecTV Now free with the purchase of a uMax85 ecotv

Will you pick up a LeEco product from one of the U.S. retailers when they become available?

Keeping it real: Improving reviews and ratings in Google Play

Posted: 29 Nov 2016 09:57 AM PST

Posted by Andrew Ahn, Product Manager and Buddhika Kottahachchi, Product Manager

The Play Store contains the largest catalog of apps in the world. As our users make decisions about the apps they'd like to install, we want to ensure Play provides a trustworthy experience.

Recently, we announced our improvements in fighting fraudulent and spam app installs. In continuing our efforts to combat spammy behavior, we've also improved the ways we identify and remove fake reviews and ratings. With this enhanced capability we are now able to identify and remove more fake reviews and ratings with greater accuracy.

In the vast majority of cases, no action is needed. If you are working with someone else to promote your app (e.g., third-party marketing agencies), we advise you to check-in and ensure that their promotion techniques use legitimate practices, and adhere to the Google Play Developer Policy. The basic rule of thumb for reviews and ratings is that they should come from genuine users, and developers should not attempt to manipulate them in any form (e.g., fake, paid, incentivized).

We will continue making such enhancements to our systems that will further help protect the integrity of Google Play, our developer community, and ultimately our end users.

Bridge games are great fun. For the uninitiated, the game gives you a gap between two cliff faces or whatever, and you have to build a stable, sturdy bridge, to, erm, bridge said gap. It's good, then, that Bridge Constructor Playground, from Headup Games, is $0.10 or equivalent in many countries, although not in the US.

Amazon reportedly working on ‘premium Echo’ with 7-inch touchscreen

Posted: 29 Nov 2016 09:28 AM PST

The Echo, the smart-enabled speaker from Amazon, is positioned as the leader when it comes to category of devices, but Google is attempting to move in with Home, and rumors suggest that Apple working on a similar product.

Now Bloomberg reports that Amazon has a few plans to shake things up and attempt to stay ahead of the competition. The report states that Amazon is working on a new version of the Echo that will feature a 7-inch touchscreen. On top of that, the new premium speaker will feature the ability to be tilted up so that you can interact with it while it's sitting on a counter. It's expected to be larger than the current generation Echo speaker.

A few other key details include the possibility that the new speaker will feature Amazon's Android-based Fire OS on board and that the touchscreen will allow users to pin items for easier access. The new speaker will also reportedly boast better speakers than what's in the current Echo, which should improve audio quality.

The current Echo is priced at $179.99 from Amazon, but there's no word on how much the new premium Echo will cost. The report points to a launch some time in "early 2017," but no exact dates have been pinned down just yet.

Depending on price, would you consider picking up the new premium Echo?
