Lenovo to End Self-Branded Phones, Will Only Sell Under Motorola Name

Posted: 09 Nov 2016 02:39 PM PST

one-of-the-last-self-branded-lenovo-phones

Motorola was acquired by Lenovo in 2014, but both companies continued launching phones under their own separate brands. However, according to a new report coming out of Campaign Asia, it seems like Lenovo is done making self-branded phones.

It's possible the Chinese device maker made the decision after posting disappointing sales figures in Q3. While quarter-over-quarter, Lenovo saw a growth of 20% in smartphone shipment volume (both Motorola and Lenovo combined), year-on-year its profits decreased with 12% (approximately CAD$2.69 billion).

Basically Lenovo has failed to impress Western markets with its smartphones. The company still relies on  PC and laptop sales to keep afloat. In the US and Canada, Lenovo smartphones are real, but a lot of customers like the Moto brand, so the decision might have a good impact on the future of Lenovo's mobile business.

The company is also going through a staff reshuffling with Gina Quiao, former Senior VP of HR, now stepping in as chief of the Mobile Business Group.

Lenovo has already started the new era. The company just announced the Moto M in China, a mid-range smartphone coming with a 5.5-inch 1080p display, Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and CAD $396 price-tag. Hopefully the company will make the phone available in Canada too.

Google Maps updated with new features, including improved ‘Add Stop’ function

Posted: 09 Nov 2016 01:21 PM PST

Google Maps is getting better and better with every update as Google adds features and improves the overall functionality of the app. The latest update is no different, adding features and laying the groundwork for more in the future.

This new update improves the feature of adding stops during your route. Rather than a white "Add Stop" button on a white background, the button has gotten bigger and bluer. It will also now animate outward to show you've added the stop, which is pretty important when you're on the road.

Google has also added an "On These Lists" section for restaurants to display recent lists or articles that the restaurant has been mentioned in.

Lastly, you can now toggle the app to always start in satellite mode if you prefer.

For the future, Google has added some code for a potential feature that will display hotel deals in the area. Of course, this can be scrapped anytime and isn't guaranteed to happen, but it's something to keep an eye out for. Check the Play Store for the update and let us know what you think!

Much like other apps of its kind, YouTube VR will let you "step inside" the world of the largest video hosting site. Here you can watch 3D 360-degree videos or the standard rectangular ones, even from the channels you subscribe to. You can immerse yourself in the three-dimensional content or you can watch the standard clips in a "theater mode".

I don't know what it is with airline apps, but they seem to have a very high chance of being ugly. Like, really ugly. The Southwest app was certainly one of the ugly ones, but it just got an update that fixes that. I'll let the screenshots tell the story.

Take a look at the changelog here.

  • We've brought new design to this version all throughout the app!

T-Mobile offering Buy One, Get One deal on Samsung Galaxy S7 this weekend

Posted: 09 Nov 2016 10:25 AM PST

If you're in the market for not just one, but two new smartphones, T-Mobile has a weekend-long promotion that might pique your interest.

The Un-carrier is hosting a Buy One, Get One Free event for the Samsung Galaxy S7. It starts at 6:00 AM PT on Friday, November 11, and runs until 11:59 PM PT on Sunday, November 13. Customers can choose to take advantage of the deal in a retail store, online, or over the phone.

There are some caveats, of course. You'll need to pick up the first Galaxy S7 with an installment plan, which means $0 down and then $28.75 per month for the next 24 months. The second Galaxy S7 has to be purchased and activated on a qualifying line of service:

  • Existing customers [with Simple Choice Unlimited plan]: Simple Choice Unlimited or T-Mobile ONE line is required with the second device to be eligible.
  • Existing customers [with plan other than Simple Choice Unlimited or T-Mobile ONE]: T-Mobile ONE plan required with first device and second device to be eligible.
  • New customers: Required to port-in a line and activate both devices with T-Mobile ONE service to be eligible.

Once those boxes have been checked, the qualifying second device will receive 24 monthly bill credits equal to the installment payments. Canceling the service before the 24 months is up means the remaining balance of the phone will be due.

If you prefer picking up the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, or the Galaxy S6 edge+, T-Mobile is including those devices in the promotion, too.

Do you plan on taking advantage of the BOGO deal?

OnePlus 3T Release Date Coming November 15th?

Posted: 09 Nov 2016 10:12 AM PST

oneplus-3t-is-coming

We've been telling you that a new variant of the OnePlus 3, the OnePlus 3T is in the pipeline. Well after Qualcomm confirmed a new OnePlus device with a Snapdragon 821 was incoming, this week OnePlus itself posted a teaser on Twitter obviously hinting to this particular smartphone.

The company says "the Snapdragon 821 is coming your way. Find out more on November 15." So it seems like we have a release date, folks!

If we are to believe the rumour mill, the OnePlus 3T is bound to make an entrance in the company of a 5.5-inch LCD display with 1080p resolution. Remember the OnePlus 3 featured a similar configuration, but the screen was of AMOLED variety.

Here come more differences, though. The phone will run on a Snapdragon 821 clocked at 2.3GHz rather than the Snapdragon 820. The new chipset will bring superior processing power, as well as improved battery life.

An improved 16MP camera taking advantage of Sony's new IMX389 sensor will grace the device, as well as 6GB of RAM and either 64GB or 128GB of internal storage.

The smartphone will run Android 7.0 Nougat out the box. Word on the street would have us believe that compared to the OnePlus 3, the OnePlus 3T will cost $80 USD extra, meaning $480 USD. We'll just have to wait and see.

Adding TV Channels to Your App with the TIF Companion Library

Posted: 09 Nov 2016 09:02 AM PST

Posted by Nick Felker and Sachit Mishra, Developer Programs Engineers

The TV Input Framework (TIF) on Android TV makes it easy for third-party app developers to create their own TV channels with any type of linear media. It introduces a new way for apps to engage with users with a high-quality channel surfing experience, and it gives users a single interface to browse and watch all of their channels.

To help developers get started with building TV channels, we have created the TV Input Framework Companion Library, which includes a number of helper methods and classes to make the development process as easy as possible.

This library provides standard classes to set up a background task that updates the program guide and an interface that helps integrate your media player with the playback controller, as well as supports the new TV Recording APIs that are available in Android Nougat. It includes everything you need to start showing your content on your Android TV's live TV app.

(Note: source from android-tv-sample-inputs sample)

To get started, take a look at the sample app and documentation. The sample demonstrates how to extend this library to create custom channels and manage video playback. Developers can immediately get started with the sample app by updating the XMLTV file with their own content or dynamically creating channels in the SampleJobService.

You can include this library in your app by copying the library directory from the sample into your project root directory. Then, add the following to your project's settings.gradle file:

include ':library'

In your app's build.gradle file, add the following to your dependencies:

compile project(':library')

Android TV continues to grow, and whether your app has on-demand or live media, TIF is a great way to keep users engaged with your content. One partner for example, Haystack TV, recently integrated TIF into their app and it now accounts for 16% of watch time for new users on Android TV.

Check out our TV developer site to learn more about Android TV, and join our developer community on Google+ at g.co/androidtvdev to discuss this library and other topics with TV developers.
