Here is the official changelog:

Motorola not planning any new smartwatches in the near future

Posted: 01 Dec 2016 02:43 PM PST

Android Wear 2.0 is launching early next year, but Motorola won't be releasing a new smartwatch for the launch. The company already said that there would be no new watches this year, and now we find out that there may not be a new watch for a while.

Head of global product development at Moto, Shakil Barkat, says that the market is too small for the company to invest in making yet another smartwatch based on the platform. He says, "Wearables do not have broad enough appeal for us to continue to build on it year after year."

Unfortunately, the popularity of Android Wear and smartwatches in general isn't where some want it to be at the moment. The technology is great and very useful, but people seem to not want to invest in it just yet. Hopefully smartwatches have a bright future and Motorola will revisit the market, and more importantly, we hope other companies don't jump ship.

Hearthstone's latest expansion Mean Streets of Gadgetzan adds noir touches to its card combat

Posted: 01 Dec 2016 02:22 PM PST

hearthstoneBlizzard's Warcraft setting used to be pretty straight high fantasy - elves, orcs, dwarves, various flavors of monsters. but after a couple of decades of strategy games and MMO action, the World has developed its own flavor. Much like Terry Pratchett's Discworld, Azeroth is sort of fluid: its fantasy tropes can be teased and prodded into more or less any genre of storytelling, so long as you don't object to seeing the occasional zombie or minotaur in your high-stakes heist plot.

Android 7.1.1 for Nexus Devices Coming December 5: Rogers

Posted: 01 Dec 2016 12:28 PM PST

google-nexus-6p

Have a newer Nexus device laying around the house? Then you better get it out because in a few days Android 7.1.1 will start rolling out.

According to Rogers, Android 7.1.1 for the Nexus 6P will be made available to customers starting December 5 in the country. From here, we can extrapolate that other Nexus devices like the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6 or Nexus Player are also bound to get the newest Android build around the same date.

rogers-android-update-schedule

The Google Pixel and Pixel XL are also scheduled to get the new build, but they already run Android 7.1 so the jump will be a small one.

Android 7.1 is available for Nexus 5X, 6P and Pixel C via the Developer Preview, with the DP2 only adding support to the Nexus 9.

Android 7.1.1 will bring bug fixes and security patches, but also new emoji featuring ladies and gentlemen of different professions and the ability for devs to add app shortcuts.

As for the Pixel phones they will probably get those nifty double tap to check phone / lift to check phone features that have been exclusive only to Pixel owners in Canada so far. Who knows–maybe the Nexus will be inheriting them too?

American Express Launches Amex Pay Mobile Wallet in Canada

Posted: 01 Dec 2016 12:18 PM PST

amex-pay-makes-a-debut

Good news for American Express card holders in Canada, as the company has announced a new mobile payment system called Amex Pay.

The NFC payment system comes embedded in the Amex CA app for Android. To get started, users need to connect their card, hover their phone over a compatible scanner and pay.

Amex Pay is quite similar to what Android Pay, Samsung Pay and Apple Pay offer, although given that this service is bound to American Express, there are some other perks to be taken into consideration.

amex-pay-interface

For example, once you connect your card to your phone you'll be able to pay even if forget your card at home one day or you lose it for good. In the later scenario, when the replacement card arrives, users won't be required to add it again, as it will already be connected thanks to a Device Card Number.

Amex Pay works well with any Amex card members like Consumer, Small Business or Corporate Cards issued by Amex Bank of Canada. Users are allowed to add up to 6 cards onto one device.

It's worth noting that American Express was the first to offer Apple Pay support in Canada when the service launched back in 2015.

Motorola has maintained that it plans on launching new Moto Mods for its Moto Z lineup of modular smartphones, and now there are even more accessories to look forward to.

Motorola has two brand new Moto Mods on the way, one from Mophie and the other from Incipio. The first is a brand new battery pack for the Moto ZMoto Z Force, and Moto Z Play. The new battery pack is bigger than Incipio's battery pack Moto Mod, offering a 3000mAh battery, and Motorola says that it can provide up to 60 percent more battery life. There's a status indicator light, and a USB Type-C port so that the case can be charged independently of the phone.

The Mophie battery Moto Mod retails for $79.99, and it's already up for order from Verizon right here.

Incipio Car Dock Moto Mod

The other new Moto Mod is the Incipio Car Dock. With it, owners can attach the accessory to their car's air conditioning vent, either horizontally or vertically, thanks to the magnets in the phone. The case makes it possible to charge the phone and connect it to your car's audio system thanks to a 3.5mm output. The Incipio Car Dock will retail $64.99 when it becomes available soon.

Motorola also confirmed that it plans on launching even more Moto Mods throughout 2017, more than it did in 2016, with four new options arriving every quarter.

Puzzle game Human Resource Machine lets players program their own corporate drones

Posted: 01 Dec 2016 05:03 AM PST

image (10)In 1961 a musical called How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying made light of the growing corporate culture in America. Half a century later, those same corporations are seen by many as a necessary evil, a soulless machine that runs on the lives of its employees. It's appropriate, then, that Human Resource Machine is more or less the opposite of How To Succeed in Business: instead of starting in the mailroom and becoming the CEO in a fun-filled week of singing and dancing, you play a literal human machine whose behavior is programmed like a computer, and who spends decades in service to a company that has nothing but contempt for you.

Fitbit said to be close to buying Pebble

Posted: 30 Nov 2016 08:53 PM PST

A major deal between two well-known wearable companies may be in the works.

Fitbit is reportedly close to buying Pebble. The deal is currently in the closing stages, says Financial Times, with Fitbit paying a "low price" for Pebble. Sources speaking to The Information echo this report.

It's unclear when the deal might be completed, but when it is, it's expected that many Pebble employees will make the jump to Fitbit. However, production of future Pebble smartwatches "is in doubt."

Pebble made a name for itself in 2012 when the Kickstarter for its first smartwatch earned $10.2 million. Since then, we've seen Pebble smartwatches hit major retailers and Pebble has released several new devices, but the company never seemed to gain a ton of traction with the general public. Plus, Pebble has been facing stiff competition from the likes of the Apple Watch and Google's Android Wear platform, both of which come from much larger companies.

Stay tuned for more on this news as we get it.

Android Auto has existed for almost two years now, but it's improved only slightly in that time. One of the more vexing inadequacies in Android Auto thus far has been the lack of OK Google support. With the latest version, the hotword trigger is finally a thing.

Just like with your phone, Android Auto now supports saying OK Google to wake up the voice control interface. There's a toggle in the Google voice settings where you set how you want the hotword to work.

Play Store has new layout and transitions for search results, may be rolling out via server-side update

Google iterates a lot on the Play Store - the new shade of green, darker and richer than the previous one - is currently rolling out globally, along with the big uninstall button and tweaked list view for apps. We've now had wind of another test, using big cards for apps that can be horizontally swiped through in search results.

When searching for an app, tapping a result will take you to this new view, where you see the current content but instead of in fullscreen, it is contained in a card.
