Top 10 Android app updates this week: Cortana, AirDroid

Welcome back to our weekly Top 10 Android App Updates column, where we take a look at the most frequently upgraded apps for the week. We've found that one of the best ways to discover useful apps is to find the ones that are actually being updated by the developers rather than selecting the apps with the most installs. As in the past, we're going to filter out minor updates for the super-popular apps that have over 10 million installs, but we'll make exceptions for apps that have had significant updates. We hope you enjoy this weekly feature and that you discover some apps that end up being useful.

Action Launcher 3 gets its December update, changes include unread count badges

As most of you know by now, Action Launcher 3 is what I use on all of my devices. I love the feature set and developer Chris Lacy puts a lot of effort and dedication into the app. He is also pretty responsive to user feedback. 

The December update for the launcher is live, bringing a number of changes. Here's the changelog:

• NEW: Unread badge support ('Alpha'): currently displays the number of unread SMS messages, missed calls, unread Gmail/Inbox messages and upcoming calendar appointments.

A few days ago, independent security firm Zimperium released details about several major security flaws in the popular AirDroid application. In summary, attackers can easily intercept insecure requests to AirDroid's servers, as well as push malicious APKs to devices which appear as AirDroid add-on updates (which AirDroid then prompts the user to accept).

Netflix VR for Daydream is now available on the Play Store

imageGoogle is making no small effort when it comes to lining up content for its new Daydream virtual reality platform, and that content isn't restricted to games and 360-degree video. Following in the footsteps of HBO and Hulu, Netflix now comes in VR flavor for those subscribers with a Pixel phone and a Daydream View headset. The app is live on the Play Store right now, though it's not compatible with non-Daydream systems - sorry, Gear VR owners.

Android Pay v1.12 prepares for launch in Japan with Rakuten Edy and other e-money providers [APK Teardown]

Android Pay made its first Asian appearance in Singapore back in late-June. A couple months later, in August, rumors began circulating that Google was in negotiations with numerous financial companies to prepare for a launch in Japan. Names of the likely partners included: Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, East Japan Railway Company, Rakuten, NTT Docomo, and JCB, to name a few. Since then, details have been sparse; but with evidence discovered in the latest update to Android Pay, it's now clear that a deal has been struck with Rakuten.
