Twitter officially announces live video streaming from the mobile app, powered by Periscope

Posted: 14 Dec 2016 02:56 PM PST

No, #GoLive is not a trending topic about bringing back Adobe GoLive. Instead, it is related to Twitter bringing the full streaming abilities of Periscope to the mobile Twitter apps. Starting today, a new 'Live' button is visible when composing a tweet, which allows you to start a live stream. As far as functionality goes, it is the exact same as starting a stream from the Periscope app.

Previously, users could view Periscope streams from Twitter, but could not add comments (instead asking users to download the separate application).

Google Play Music app might get autoplay feature in the future

Posted: 14 Dec 2016 02:42 PM PST

The latest update to the Google Play Music app for Android didn't introduce any major features, but new code inside the app hints at a future one. There's a string of code referencing an autoplay feature that will "Automatically start music when you open the app."

There are also references to more quality control, like audio quality over WiFi and LTE rather than just one option for quality on a mobile network, as well as downloaded music quality to potentially save on storage. Unfortunately, there's no knowing if these features will actually come to the app. For now, all we have are hints.

Wynn Las Vegas hotel announces Amazon Echo in every room this summer

Posted: 14 Dec 2016 02:42 PM PST

The Wynn Las Vegas hotel has announced that it will be putting an Amazon Echo into each of its 4,748 hotel rooms. The device will be used for many functions, including drawing the curtains, controlling lights, and changing temperature.

Functions like listening to music and buying from Amazon will not be supported, as those are tied to a personal account. As time goes on, though, the hotel will roll out more and more features as they are tested. Alexa will become a smarter and smarter hotel butler.

While this is an exciting and brilliant idea, privacy is a serious concern. Having an always-listening device in your hotel room that collects data (the Alexa app saves a history of all your commands) may be an issue for many. Does the hotel wipe data between guests? Does it have access to the data? It's something to consider, and you may want to consider turning off the Echo if you stay there. Let us know what you think in the comments!

Instagram 10.3 adds 'Saved' tab for keeping photos and videos for later

Posted: 14 Dec 2016 01:56 PM PST

Instagram has rapidly added new features in the past few months, from Periscope-esque live streaming to Boomerang support. The latest addition to the mobile apps is not a groundbreaking change, but still very useful. Starting with Instagram 10.3 for Android, a new 'Saved' tab is visible on the profile page.

When viewing a photo or video, a new Save button is visible on the bottom right. All your saved photos appear together on the Saved tab, and removing them is as easy as pressing the save button again. Your saved posts are not visible by other users, and users are not notified if their post has been saved by someone else.

OnePlus 3T being updated to OxygenOS 3.5.4 with lots of bug fixes

Posted: 14 Dec 2016 01:52 PM PST

The OnePlus 3T is getting an update starting today, and though it's not Android 7.0 Nougat, it's still an important one. There are a ton of bug fixes and improvements rolled into this one that affect daily usability. Here's a full changelog:

  • Optimizations for US-TMO Network
  • Optimizations to Reduce Lag when Battery is below 5%
  • Optimized Bluetooth Connectivity for Mazda Cars
  • Optimized Battery Saving Mode: GPS and Orientation Preferences will be restored when Battery Saving Mode is closed.
  • Fixed Flashlight Usability Issue in WhatsApp
  • Increased System Stability
  • Implemented Various Bug Fixes

With all the fixes included, owners of the device will want to download this update as soon as possible. Unfortunately, it's rolling out incrementally; a small group will get it today and the rest will get it over the course of a few days. So if you check once or twice (or 10 times) and it's still not available, give it a day or two. You'll get it soon.

Chrome 56 Beta adds official Web Bluetooth API support, experiential WebVR, and more [APK Download]

Posted: 14 Dec 2016 12:41 PM PST

Chrome 55 marked the arrival of many user-side changes, including Chrome's built-in download manager and saving pages for offline reading. Normally I separate posts about Chrome releases into new features for users and new abilities developers can use, but this release (at least in its current form) is almost completely about new APIs.

Web Bluetooth API

This is exactly what it sounds like - an API that allows web apps to interact with Bluetooth devices.

Twitter rolls out live video streaming powered by Periscope

Posted: 14 Dec 2016 11:47 AM PST

Streaming live video is a big deal these days, especially for social networks, and Twitter is placing a major focus on it.

Twitter has announced that live streaming is now baked into the stock Twitter app for Android (and iOS). To go live, users will need to compose a new tweet and then tap the "LIVE" button. Once there, they'll see a pre-broadcast screen to frame the shot. There's a "Go Live" option to select to officially start the stream.

The live streams will appear not only in the Periscope app, but also in followers' Twitter feed. Viewers will be able to send hearts by tapping the screen, and they can comment on what's happening in real-time.

And while the new built-in Twitter broadcast is powered by Periscope, users won't need to have the Periscope app to make it work.

Creativity – An App to Help You Develop Ideas & Solve Problems

Posted: 14 Dec 2016 11:12 AM PST

PinterestTwitterGoogle+FacebookFlipboardEvernoteShare

Creativity is an Android app that is designed to help you develop ideas and solve problems through a variety of methods. When you open the app you will see a menu of ten techniques for developing ideas and or solving problems. Those techniques include everything from a basic brainstorming of a list to more advanced methods like "Six Thinking Hats" and SCAMPER. All of the ideas, problems, and solutions that you develop in the app can be saved as individual files. You can maintain as many files as you need. You can share the ideas, problems, and solutions that you develop in the app with your friends and colleagues through email and social media. I was even able to share to my Google Keep account.

Creativity could be a good app for students to use when they need to generate ideas for solving complex problems.

Instagram now lets you save posts for later

Posted: 14 Dec 2016 10:37 AM PST

While perusing your Instagram feed, you may have watched a video or seen a photo that you wanted to check out again later, but depending on how many people you follow — and Instagram's algorithmic feed — that may not be the easiest thing to do.

Instagram wants to make it easier to go back and see those posts you might have wanted to take a closer look at. In the latest version of its app, Instagram will now let you bookmark posts, which are then saved to check out at a later date. The posts are saved privately, and they'll appear in a new profile tab for easy viewing.

To bookmark a post, just select the bookmark icon below the photo or video, and it will be automatically saved to the new, private tab. You'll need Instagram version 10.2 to take advantage of the new bookmark feature, and it's available for both Android and iOS.

Posted: 14 Dec 2016 09:41 AM PST

music

An update to Google Play Music began rolling out earlier this week, but there aren't any signs of changes in the UI. However, a couple of interesting things did turn up during a teardown. We can look forward to new settings to control audio quality for each of the major situations for downloading music. Additionally, there will be an option to allow the app to begin playing music as soon as it launches.

Google makes it easier to switch from iOS to Android with Google Drive backup tool

Posted: 14 Dec 2016 08:47 AM PST

Apple has a switch tool in the Play Store that helps Android people switch to iOS. It's unlikely Google would get such an app approved by the Apple bots in the App Store. However, it's done a bit of an end-run around that with an update to the Drive app. You can now back up your iPhone data to Drive, then restore it all on Android.

The new backup option in the iOS Drive app is found under menu > settings > backup.

Gfycat releases official Loops app on the Play Store after georestricted beta

Posted: 14 Dec 2016 05:04 AM PST

Back in April, we spotted a Gfycat app on the Play Store, but it was only available in some countries and seemed to still be in beta. Now that app is renamed to Gfycat Loops, has a new Play Store listing, and is officially released in many countries.

Gfycat Loops lets you satiate your desperate need for gifs. You can search GIFs and browse among more than 200 categories of memes and reactions, sign in with your account and manage your own GIFs, but the part you're most likely looking for is GIF creation.

Android Wear 2.0 for China - Developer Preview

Posted: 13 Dec 2016 06:10 PM PST

Posted by Hoi Lam, Developer Advocate

Today at Google Developer Day China, we are happy to announce a developer preview of Android Wear 2.0 for developers creating apps for China. Android Wear 2.0 is the biggest update since our partners launched their first devices in China last year.

We're making a Developer Preview available today and plan to release additional updates in the coming months. Please send us your feedback by filing bugs or posting in our Android Wear Developers community.

Developing for the Chinese Market

With Android Wear 2.0, apps can access the internet directly on Android Wear devices. As a result, for the majority of apps, having a companion phone application is no longer necessary. This means that most developers creating apps for Android Wear 2.0 may no longer need to import the Google Play services library.

There are two situations where developers will need to import Google Play services for China:

  • Apps that require direct interaction with the paired mobile device - some experiences require Android Wear to connect directly to a paired phone. In this case, the Data Layer API introduced in Android Wear 1.0 will continue to function.
  • New FusedLocationProvider for China - we have added location detection to the SDK for Chinese developers. With the user's permission, your app can receive location updates via the FusedLocationProvider.

You can find more details about how to import the China compatible version of Google Play services library here.

Product testing for Android Wear 2.0 for China

The Android Wear 2.0 Developer Preview includes an updated SDK with tools, and system images for testing using the Huawei Watch.

To get started, follow these steps:

Give us feedback

We will update this developer preview over the next few months based on your feedback. The sooner we hear from you, the more we can include in the final release, so don't be shy!

Android Wear 2.0

Android Wear 2.0
