Well, it turns out those Android Mega Man ports look like a tremendous pile of crap

Posted: 22 Dec 2016 03:19 PM PST

megaaaaa

The title of this article gets the point across, but watch the trailer below to see what I mean.

Yeah. Now watch some of this video of some actual NES gameplay of Mega Man 2.

And now compare to the Mega Man Legacy Collection released for PS4.

Notice any... differences? Like that the second and third videos have a frame rate that is not best measured using your fingers? Yeah. That's pretty much the issue there.

ASUS teases new Zen announcement at CES 2017

Posted: 22 Dec 2016 03:08 PM PST

ASUS has posted two videos teasing its upcoming announcements at CES 2017. The company is using the same tagline as it usually does, telling us that "Incredible is coming." There's also "Zennovation," which implies a new Zen device.

As is usual for ASUS, the teaser is artsy and gives absolutely no details about the upcoming device. Buzz words and inspirational talk is all we get. Nonetheless, we're still excited to see what the company has to offer at CES!

AT&T announces Call Protect app to help filter spam calls

Posted: 22 Dec 2016 02:03 PM PST

AT&T is trying to fight spam calls and phishing scams with its new Call Protect app. The app offers features like automatically blocking fraud calls before they ring on your phone. Another feature warns you of suspected spam while the phone is ringing, though this is only available when you're in an area covered by HD Voice.

Unfortunately, there are already some problems with the service. It's only available to AT&T customers that are eligible for HD Voice. Also, blocking phone numbers manually only lasts for 30 days, which is a very strange design choice on AT&T's part. This may explain why the app has 2.1 stars on the Play Store.

If you're eligible to try it out, hit the source link to give it a shot. But if early reviews to be believed, it may not be the greatest service. You can always use a free alternative on the Play Store!

OnePlus 2 being updated to OxygenOS 3.5.5

Posted: 22 Dec 2016 02:03 PM PST

The OnePlus 2 might be an older device, but it has not yet been forgotten. The device is now getting an update to OxygenOS 3.5.5, which brings many fixes and new features (though it's not Nougat). Here's a full list of changes:

  • Enabled VoLTE functionality for select carriers
  • Added App Lock
  • Added Battery Saving Mode ( Settings > Battery > More )
  • Added Gaming Mode ( Settings > Developer Options )
  • Added Additional Options for the Alert Slider.
  • Redesign of the Volume Adjustment Bar
  • Shelf Optimizations
  • Updated OxygenOS UI
  • Updated Interface and UI of the Clock app
  • Updated Android Security Patch Level to 1/12/16
  • Increased System Stability
  • General Bug Fixes

There are a few things to keep in mind before updating. During the update, settings like ringtones and color choices will be reset. Many stock apps like Messages, Clock, and Calculator will be replaced by OnePlus apps, though the stock apps are still on the Play Store. And lastly, going back to OxygenOS 3.1.0 will not be possible without a special downgrade package that wipes user data.

If you're interested in the update, check for updates in Settings. It's an incremental rollout so it might take a while to get to everyone, so if you don't see it immediately, don't worry about it. Let us know when you get it in the comments!

Google confirms two flagship smartwatches will arrive in 2017

Posted: 22 Dec 2016 12:08 PM PST

Rumors have suggested that Google intends to launch its own smartwatches at some point in the future, with signs pointing to a release date coinciding with the public release of Android Wear 2.0 in 2017.

Now we know that that is indeed the case. Jeff Chang, Product Manager of Android Wear at Google, confirmed to The Verge that Google has two new "flagship smartwatches" in the works which will launch sometime in early 2017. They will be the first devices with Android Wear 2.0 on board.

Google is taking cues from its Nexus initiative, and the new smartwatches will feature branding from the company that manufacturers them, not Google branding. Unfortunately, Chang would not divulge which company is building the devices, but did say that they have released Android Wear devices in the past.

The release of Android Wear 2.0 release on Google's smartwatches will also see the floodgates open, so to speak, as other companies will then update existing smartwatches and release new hardware throughout 2017 with the software pre-installed.

The report states that Google will release the fifth and final Developer Preview for Android Wear 2.0 in January of next year, and that it will add support for Android Pay. On top of that, Google Assistant will be available on future wearables, too.

Chang added that Android Pay with Android Wear 2.0 will work with iOS devices as well. He did caution that there will be differences between Wear 2.0 on iOS and Android, but what that means right now remains a mystery.

It's worth noting that not all the old Android Wear devices will get updated to Android Wear 2.0, and supporting Android Pay on a wearable means NFC has to be available, but the original report does include a list of devices that will be getting upgraded to Android Wear 2.0 at some point in the future.

Are you looking forward to the arrival of Android Wear 2.0?

Platforming shooter GoNNER comes to SHIELD Android TV, currently on sale for $6.69 (33% off)

Posted: 22 Dec 2016 11:54 AM PST

Owners of the NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV are getting yet another sweet exclusive title today, the Steam favorite GoNNER. This is a hard-as-nails shooter with platforming elements and a unique art style. How long can you survive? Probably not as long as you think.

According to the developer, GoNNER is about a creature called Ikk on a journey to cheer up his only friend, a giant landbound whale named Sally. You do that by searching for trinkets in deep, dark caverns crawling with enemies. The aim is to get the highest score possible (there are built-in leader boards) before you run out of hit points.

LG G5 and Moto Z Receiving Android 7.0 Nougat Update in Canada

Posted: 22 Dec 2016 11:34 AM PST

lg-g5-moto-z

Do you happen to own an LG G5 or the Moto Z? If that's the case then you'll be happy to hear that your device will soon be updated to the latest Android 7.0 Nougat build…if you live in Canada.

According to people online holding on to a LG G5 from Telus or Bell, the update is currently rolling out. If you have one such device, simply go into settings and check if the latest build is now available to you.

As for Rogers, the carrier listed the Android 7.0 update will start to become available for the LG G5 beginning December 21. So it might take a while for Rogers customers to see the notification alerting them they can update to the new build.

As for the Moto Z, the phone is also getting the new update in Canada. Users who already installed the new build are reporting improvements like multi-window support, inline replies and display scaling.

If you don't see a notification on your phone, don't despair. It's customary for these updates to be rolled out in stages, so some users might get it sooner than others. It's all depending on location and with which carrier you do business with.

Google and Huawei Working to Solve Nexus 6P Shutdown Issues

Posted: 22 Dec 2016 11:19 AM PST

gold_nexus6p

After the Nexus 6P got its Android 7.0 Nougat update, some users took to the forums to complain about an unexpected battery drainage problem.

Many believed that the Nougat update was to blame for the troubles, but users downgrading to Android 6.0 Marshmallow were faced with the same issues. This was a few weeks ago, now some Nexus 6P users are reporting their phones are inexplicably shutting down while the battery still has juice.

It's usually around the 20% mark when the lights on the Nexus 6P go dark. While Huawei initially refused to take investigate this pressing matter, passing it in Google's backyard, it seems the Chinese OEM has now reconsidered.

huawei-6p-battery-life

According to a report coming out of Venture Beat, claims both Google and Huawei have been made aware of the situation and are currently investigating the issue. Hopefully the issue will be solved at some point. The Nexus 6P is about one year old, so lots of people are still using it. On August 22, Google released the Android 7.0 Nougat update for the Nexus 6P, thus breathing new life into it.

There are countless posts on Reddit and Google's Product Forum detailing the problem, so it seems the issue is quite widespread. So Google and Huawei need to do something about it ASAP.

Huawei’s Upcoming P10 Flagship Could Be a Galaxy S7 Edge Lookalike

Posted: 22 Dec 2016 11:19 AM PST

possible-huawei-p10

The Huawei P9 was released back in April and arrived with a 5.2-inch display with 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution and Kirin 955 processor under the hood.

The phone looked quite impressive – slim and sleek featuring almost non-visible side bezels. Well it appears that next year, Huawei wants to continue the cycle of design innovation when it comes to its P lineup.

According to the folks of  Playfuldroid who scooped up some information off Weibo, Huawei's next-gen P10 will come with a dual-curved display, pretty much in the vein of the Galaxy S7 edge (and other edge models before it).

On top of that, the high-end phone will feature a front-facing fingerprint sensor just like the Huawei Mate 9 Pro.

Previous information related to the P10 would have us believe the phone will be launched with a 5.5-inch display with 1,440 x 2,560 pixel resolution. So it appears that the P10 will have plenty in common with the Galaxy S7 edge.

Other rumored specs include a Kirin 960 processor working in concert with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. However given that 2017 is probably going to be the year when 8GB phones will start appearing, it makes more sense to assume the P10 will feature 6GB of RAM instead. Or maybe the company will offer two versions one with 4GB and another with 6GB.

T-Mobile offering BOGO deal on Samsung smartphones

Posted: 22 Dec 2016 10:08 AM PST

T-Mobile has announced a new deal for the holidays, giving customers the ability to buy a Samsung smartphone and get another free. The offer includes the Samsung Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge, Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge+, and Galaxy J7. Customers who take advantage of the offer will need to redeem the offer on T-Mobile's promotions website, and then will be sent a prepaid MasterCard to reimburse the cost.

Only certain rate plans are eligible for this offer. New customers will need to activate both lines on a T-Mobile One plan. Existing customers with a Simple Choice Unlimited LTE plan can add the second device with the same Simple Choice Unlimited LTE plan. For customers with any other rate plan, both devices will need to be activated on a T-Mobile One plan.

This promotion is great for customers looking to score a free device, though the need to use a T-Mobile One plan in most situations may turn away some. Nonetheless, this is just one of many promotions that T-Mobile is offering during the holiday season.

Opera Max now offers 'VIP Mode' with unlimited VPN use in exchange for charging screen ads

Posted: 22 Dec 2016 09:04 AM PST

Opera Max made some changes a while back that we weren't super-pleased about, but now it's trying to make amends. Sort of. Opera Max is a free VPN that you're paying for by seeing ads every time you open it to re-enable the VPN. You have to do that every 12 hours, but you can leave it on all the time with the new VIP Mode. However, it shows you lock screen ads when your device is charging.

Google's Voice Access app is a good solution to a special kind of problem: how to use apps designed for a touchscreen without actually touching the screen. Version 2.0 began rolling out last week to users signed up for the beta. There aren't a lot of changes to come with this major version bump, but some new voice commands and settings still made this update. If you don't already have the latest version, or perhaps you've chosen not to join the beta program, there is a download link at the bottom.

In a surprise move, LG has officially revealed five new smartphones ahead of CES 2017. The highlight is the new K series of smartphones, which contains four devices that share similarities, but that are designed for a range of different customers. LG is calling the K series its new line of "mass-tier smartphones".

LG K10

  • 5.3-inch 720p display
  • 1.5GHz octa-core processor
  • 13-megapixel rear camera
  • 5-megapixel wide-angle front-facing camera

  • Android 7.0 Nougat

LG K8

  • 5-inch 720p display
  • 1.4GHz quad-core processor
  • 13-megapixel rear camera
  • 5-megapixel front-facing camera
  • 2500mAh battery
  • Android 7.0 Nougat

LG K4

  • 2100mAh battery
  • Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow

As can be gleaned from the specs, the K series ranges from mid-range to the lowest-tier budget ranges. LG hasn't released pricing information, but we'd expect all of the K series devices to be quite affordable. Specific availability and pricing will be announced at a later date, but we expect the K series to be geared towards developing markets, such as Africa and Southeast Asia.

LG Stylo 3

LG also announced the Stylo 3 ahead of CES.

LG Stylo 3

  • 1.5GHz octa-core processor

Sprint is offering up to $325 in account credits when activating a Pixel

Posted: 21 Dec 2016 08:38 PM PST

Sprint has quietly begun a new promo for customers who activate a Google Pixel or Pixel XL. Customers who purchase one of the devices can receive up to $325 in account credits when they activate it on Sprint. Though Sprint doesn't have access to sell the phones directly, it's still finding a way to incentivize activating the phones on Sprint.

For customers who bring over a Pixel, Sprint will offer account credits of $10/month for 24 months, totaling $240. For customers who bring over a Pixel XL, Spring will offer $13.55/month for 24 months, totaling $325.

The deal is open to new and existing customers, but due to Sprint's method of quietly sending the details only to select customers, it may take a bit to get the deal activated. Some store reps are in the loop and others are unaware of this offer. Have patience and work with them, as Sprint Support is aware of the deal and can help to get the promo added to customer accounts.

Atari brings RCT2-inspired Roller Coaster Tycoon Classic to Android for $5.99

Posted: 21 Dec 2016 07:04 PM PST

I'm a huge fan of the Roller Coaster Tycoon series. The original two games, Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 and 2, were created by developer legend Chris Sawyer and published by Hasbro Interactive and Infogrames respectively. Both titles, as well as the third entry, were massively popular - but I think most can agree the series declined after that. The latest entry, Roller Coaster Tycoon World, was an unfinished mess that shifted developers several times and currently has a 'Mostly Negative' rating on Steam.
