LG G6 renders indicate no modular design

Posted: 28 Dec 2016 02:14 PM PST

If rumors are to be believed, LG has plans to launch their next flagship smartphone, the LG G6, sometime in early 2017.

When that first rumor cropped up, a single render came along with it, showing off a design that seemed similar enough at a glance to the G5 before it. Now we have new renders to stare at thanks to @OnLeaks and GearIndia. The images show both the front and back of the sleek handset.

If the renders pan out, then we'll see an LG G6 that shares an overall design cue from the G5, but one that features less-rounded corners. There will be a dual-camera setup on the back, along with the fingerprint sensor below that. At the bottom, it appears LG will be adopting a USB Type-C port, and LG is keeping the 3.5mm headphone jack around a bit longer, which is positioned at the top.

The most notable aspect of these new renders, though, is the lack of any modular design. There does not appear to be any indications that LG will be following the same route as the G5 with next year's flagship.

As far as other rumored features go, the G6 is said to boast a 5.3-inch display with a 2560×1440 resolution. There will be a dual LED flash along with the dual-camera setup, and there will apparently be both matte and glossy finishes to choose from when it launches.

What do you think of the rumors swirling around the G6?

Samsung’s Galaxy S8 Might Be More Galaxy Note7-Like Than You Think

Samsung feels really bad about what happened to the Note7 and wants to make it up to its loyal users. How? Via the Galaxy S8 of course.

Rumours that Samsung will launch a Galaxy S8 Plus model with a 6-inch display, show pretty clearly the company is looking to venture into phablet territory in order to appease those still nostalgic about the Note7.

Now a new leak, suggest that the Galaxy S8 might come with an external S Pen accessory. This means the S Pen won't be housed inside the flagship, but will be sold separately for an extra amount of cash.

Lots of customers have been reluctant to return the Galaxy Note7 because they view the Galaxy S7 as a downgrade. But an S Pen touting Galaxy S8 would be an entirely different affair.

Many things have been whispered about Samsung's next-gen S flagship including that it will come bundling the Note7 iris scanner and will draw power from a Snapdragon 835. The phone should come without a physical home button and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. The device might the first Samsung to take advantage of the services of a virtual AI assistant, which the rumor dubbed Bixby.

Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S8 during its customary Unpacked Event at MWC 2017.

Three New HTC Devices Coming in Q1 2017

HTC is not going all that great when it comes to smartphones. Actually, one analyst predicted the company might restrain itself from launching another flagship in the US market.

However, a new rumour that popped up today indicates that HTC will soon be flooding the market with 3 new smartphones. The devices will be released in the course of the three months making up Q1.

According to AndroidHeadlines, HTC is gearing up to unveil a hot new device during the company's upcoming January 12 "U" event, which will most likely be the middle-range X10 model – powerful yet affordable device.

The Taiwanese company also plans to unveil the so-called Ocean Note handset in Q1. It's not the first time we've heard of the device. A while back, the rumour mill revealed HTC is working on a trio of Ocean smartphones – the Ocean Master, Ocean Note and Ocean Smart – devices expected to sport a sleek body and come without a home button.

Following the Galaxy Note7 demise, it seems HTC might be looking to fill in the void with a Note of its own. It would be interesting to see a stylus touting phablet coming out of the company. But this is only wishful thinking for now.

The third Ocean is probably the HTC 11 flagship (the successor of the HTC 10), which could come last to close the cycle.

[Android 7.1 Tip] Get rid of the Play Store on your home screen and use the 'My Apps' shortcut instead

Posted: 28 Dec 2016 10:52 AM PST

Odds are you have the Play Store on your home screen for easy accessibility, but have you ever considered not having it? I don't mean you should dig into the app drawer every time you need to open the store, but perhaps the regular Play Store link isn't the most efficient. If you're on Android 7.1, maybe you ought to replace it with the My Apps shortcut.

App Shortcuts (formerly known as Launcher Shortcuts) were added in 7.1 Nougat to allow developers to link to specific locations in their apps.
