Verizon offers Unlimited Together plan for international calling

Posted: 25 Jan 2017 03:58 PM PST

Verizon is looking to make it a bit easier to call international markets thanks to a new plan it just introduced.

The big red carrier has officially announced Unlimited Together, a brand new international plan that offers customers an unlimited amount of minutes to call international landlines and unlimited minutes to call cell phones in almost 40 different countries, all for $15 per month.

The carrier is also offering discounting calling to more than 160 countries across the globe.

How often do you call internationally?

Noodlecake brings the classic 3D adventure game Myst to the Play Store in remastered form

Posted: 25 Jan 2017 03:15 PM PST

image (3)The original Myst games were, somewhat appropriately, lost in time. First released in 1993, Myst debuted just as the point-and-click adventure game genre was dying out in favor of full 3D RPGs and shooters now enabled by more advanced personal computers with CD-ROM drives. Myst tried to bridge the gap: it used the same focus on exploration, puzzle-solving, and narrative that games from Lucasarts and Sierra had relied upon, but added stunning prerendered graphics to make its island mystery more visually compelling.

Target is launching its own mobile payment service

Posted: 25 Jan 2017 03:03 PM PST

The market for mobile payment options is still growing, both in adoption from businesses and users, so obviously companies are going to jump on the opportunity to host their own option for potential customers.

Big box retailers like Walmart are already in on the fun when it comes to mobile payment options, launching Walmart Pay last year. And while just having services like Android Pay, Samsung Pay, and Apple Pay might be good enough for most, retailers need to get that cake.

So, perhaps it's not surprising to hear from Recode that Target, another big box retail chain, is setting up to launch its own mobile payment service later this year. Specifically, the report states that Target will build the ability to checkout at its retail stores from within one, or all, of its mobile apps.

That service will only be available for REDcard holders, both in the form of debit and credit cards, at least to start, but it will eventually roll out to all Target customers at some point in the future. Unfortunately there's no word on when that might be, or what this service will be called.

Target Pay, anyone?

HTC is not making a smartwatch

Posted: 25 Jan 2017 10:03 AM PST

HTC has confirmed that it is not building an Android Wear smartwatch, shutting down rumors that have swirled since an HTC smartwatch appeared in leaked photos last week. The confirmation came from an interview that Tbreak Media conducted with HTC's President of Smartphones and Connected Devices, Chialing Chang.

Chang stated that "we're not going to have an Android watch". Android Police subsequently reached out to HTC, which confirmed that the statement was accurate.

Android Police has since learned from a different source that the leaked smartwatch is an old prototype that is no longer under development.

It's unsurprising that HTC is moving away from Android Wear and smartwatches as a whole. The segment has struggled to gain significant consumer interest, showing lackluster sales. HTC, with its delicate financial situation, cannot afford to take unnecessary risks by investing into wearables.

Google Play services v10.2 prepares for Google Fit v2 API and FIDO-certified security keys [APK Teardown]

Posted: 25 Jan 2017 06:03 AM PST

gms

The recent rollout of Google Play services v10.2 came with a cool new Instant Tethering feature that automatically enables a small set of devices to sip on a shared cellular signal when they're in need. Aside from a couple of minor tweaks, that appears to be the only major functional change we're supposed to access at this time. However, that doesn't mean there aren't a few other things waiting to be revealed.

GIPHY now lets you save GIFs so you can share them however and whenever you want

Posted: 25 Jan 2017 04:32 AM PST

Giphy released its official Android app in April of last year, but it had one caveat. You couldn't easily save the GIFs to your device (there were workarounds, but not ones regular users would know), you could only share them to other apps. This meant you had to know where exactly you wanted to use that GIF in order to benefit most from the app and you couldn't just browse, grab any GIFs you like, and keep them on the off-chance you'll need them later.

Slideshow being tested in Facebook app after iOS debut back in June

Posted: 25 Jan 2017 04:02 AM PST

Back in June, Facebook released a new feature to the iOS app, Slideshow, which takes photos uploaded to the service and turns them into videos, much like in Google Photos. We've received a tip that says this is now being tested in the Facebook app on Android, although it's hard to say how widely.

None of the Android Police team have Slideshow in the Facebook app, so we've not actually been able to use it.

Google first talked about Google Home back at I/O, but the device became official at the recent October hardware event. The speakers didn't go into detail on all the apps and services that Home would work with, preferring instead to focus on a few specific demos. Now, Google has published a list of everything that works with Home, and we expect this will grow over time.

Here's what Google has published so far on its support site for Home.

Google Translate adds instant camera English/Japanese translation [APK Download]

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 06:02 PM PST

Google Translate's live camera translation feature is still one of the most impressive features I've seen in a mobile app, and one of the most convincing reasons that Google Glass should be resurrected. Google Translate's 5.7 update, in addition to fixing a sharing bug with Facebook Messenger, adds support for instant English to/from Japanese translation via the camera.

Left, Center: Normal camera translation; Right: Instant camera translation

If you have never used it, simply download the offline translation pack for a given language (in this case, 42MB for Japanese), tap the camera icon in Translate, and make sure the eye icon at the bottom right is green.

Wind Mobile Discounts 6GB LTE Plan from $45 to $35 for 10 months

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 04:15 PM PST

Back in November 2016, Wind Mobile re-branded into a new entity called Freedom Mobile. The company also announced its LTE network in Toronto and Vancouver.

Now in an effort to promote said network, the carrier is shaving off $10 from its $45 plan for new customers willing to jump onboard with it. The plan offers 3GB of LTE/3G data on the Freedom Mobile "Home network" and an additional 3GB of data per month on the same network until 31 January, 2018.

The bundle also includes Unlimited calls to Canada/USA, global text/MMS, Canada/US picture/video texting and reduced roaming rates in over 60 countries across the globe. The plan is available for new and existing "Pay Before" and "Pay After" customers. Interested parties should grab it until 31 January, 2017.

Wind Mobile will cut the plan to $35 with a 10-month credit for $10 (a total of $100 bonus) for new customers (after the grace period the price goes back to $45). The credit is offered to anyone activating an Everywhere 45 or 55 plan.

Since the Freedom Mobile's AWS-3-spectrum LTE network is pretty limited customers looking o take advantage of the carrier's LTE speeds need a compatible device. At the moment they have a choice between the ZTE Grand X 4 (included in the promo) or the LG V20. More phones are expected to be added soon.
