Honor 6X announced at CES 2017 with dual camera and metal body

Posted: 03 Jan 2017 02:51 PM PST

Honor has announced the latest device in its lineup. The Honor 6X is a budget device meant to reside under the mid-range Honor 8. Despite the budget price of $249.99 for the base model, it packs some pretty impressive specs.

It features a 5.5-inch full HD display, 3GB of RAM, an octa-core Kirin 655 processor, 32GB of memory with a microSD slot, a 12MP camera with a secondary 2MP sensor, an 8MP front-facing camera, a 3340mAh battery, a fingerprint sensor, and Android 6.0 with EMUI 4.1 on top.

With a metal body and Huawei's fast fingerprint sensor, the Honor 6X looks like a high-end device. The hardware inside is quite good for the price as well, with the processor being the weakest link. And with a beefy battery and lower end specs, the battery life is absolutely fantastic and can last two days.

The US will be getting the 3GB/32GB model while there will be a 4GB/64GB model available in some markets. The device will be released tomorrow, January 4, and there will be flash sales in the US to grab the device for $199.99.

It's definitely an impressive device at a low price. Let us know if you plan to pick one up in the comments!

Sony Xperia X gets Android 7.1.1 update through Concept program

Posted: 03 Jan 2017 01:56 PM PST

Sony is officially the first manufacturer to release an Android 7.1.1 update for its devices other than Google… technically.

Sony has released the 7.1.1 update for the Xperia X. The catch is that the update is available through the experimental track of the Sony Concept program, which is basically a "beta" program for Sony users to use the latest software the company has to offer. The update isn't rolling out to all Xperia X owners just yet.

Other changes include a restart option in the power menu, Playstation 4 PS4 remote play support, faster camera start up, and the December security patch.

It's great to see Sony pushing the latest software so quickly, even if it's not for everyone. Let us know if you get it!

Google Home bug causes music to stop playing for many

Posted: 03 Jan 2017 01:56 PM PST

Some Google Home users have noticed that the device will stop playing music all of a sudden. Playback of music never lasts long, sometimes cutting out in just a few songs. Unfortunately, this bug has bitten me, too.

Quite a few people are affected and Google has acknowledged the issue. Sadly, there is no fix at the moment. There's a thread on the Google product forums where a Google rep has asked people to post if they are experiencing the same issue. So if you've noticed this, hit the source link and let Google know. Hopefully this is fixed soon so Google Home can go back to performing one of its main functions.

Hyundai announces Google Home control of Blue Link-supported cars

Posted: 03 Jan 2017 01:56 PM PST

Hyundai took to CES 2017 to announce a new feature for the Blue Link service that allows you to use an app to control a supported car, like start it and lock the doors.

The new feature is support for Google Home. While you can't just tell Google Home to start your car, you can tell Google Home to tell Blue Link to command your car. Some things you can do are start the car, set temperature, lock the doors, and send addresses to the car.

This is definitely a great feature to have. Like the video shows, you can check the weather, warm the interior of your car up before you get in, and have directions waiting for you. It's not revolutionary, but it's definitely a nice feature to have if you're buying a new car.

Posted: 03 Jan 2017 01:31 PM PST

A new year means a new Telegram update. Version 3.16 adds in deleting recently sent messaging for everyone, network usage information, t.me short links, and a host of small, but significant, improvements to the Android app.

The big addition is the ability to delete recently sent messages, stopping everyone from seeing them. Telegram's blog entry on v3.16 says this is available up to 48 hours after the message has been sent, so any drunk tweets can be got rid of once you've sobered up a bit.

AirTV Player is a new 4K Android TV streaming set-top box

Posted: 03 Jan 2017 11:51 AM PST

Set-top boxes aren't going anywhere any time soon, so making them better is all that's left to do. The Dish-owned AirTV is one company that feels like it has a solid attempt at that.

The AirTV Player is a brand new 4K set-top box with Android TV on board. While Android TV is there under the hood, the device also includes the Sling TV over-the-top video service, and there are apps from Google Play built in as well. That means there should be a variety of different options for those who want to consume content.

AirTV is highlighting Netflix and YouTube, but the company is also noting that there are a variety of different apps that can be installed from Google Play. If those sources have 4K video content, AirTV Player owners will be able to watch them at their full resolution.

The AirTV set-top box also includes a Bluetooth-equipped remote with support for voice commands. There are dedicated buttons for Netflix, YouTube, and Sling and support for connecting to a TV and audio systems via infrared.

The other key feature of the AirTV Player is the ability to connect an antenna into the box itself, with the channels accessed that way integrated right into the Sling TV overlay.

There are options to choose from. The set-top box with the OTA adapter kit, which provides access to that antenna connector, is $129.99. There is a $99.99 option, which includes only internet TV services. AirTV will sell a $39.99 adapter separately, though, if you go with the internet-only option initially but then later want the OTA add-on.

Samsung Galaxy Note8 to Feature Bixby Virtual Assistant, 4K Display: Report

Posted: 03 Jan 2017 10:35 AM PST

As we walk into 2017 the first rumours about the Samsung Galaxy Note8 have already started emerging. After the grand Note7 fiasco, some concerns were raised whether Samsung might kill the entire Note family.

Well if you got worried there for a second, you should know a recent rumour coming out of Business Korea claims the Galaxy Note line of products will continue on with a new iteration coming this year.

According to the information at hand, the Galaxy Note8 will come equipped with the same virtual assistant (Bixby) which is expected to make a debut on the next-gen Galaxy S8 in a few months.

On top of that, we're also told the Galaxy Note8 mark a first for Samsung – it will come featuring a UHD or 4K resolution display which should deliver an advanced Virtual Reality experience.

The Galaxy Note8 won't be the first 4K smartphone to ever make an appearance on the market. Back in 2015, Sony launched the Xperia Z5 Premium handset, but the phone didn't prove to be that popular. But maybe Samsung can pull off a 4K smartphone instead.

Last but not least, the report mentions Samsung won't release another flagship until it announces the results of the Galaxy Note7 investigation, which should happen sometime later this month.

TCL Teases BlackBerry Mercury Smartphone in Short Video

Posted: 03 Jan 2017 10:25 AM PST

CES 2017 is scheduled to start in a few hours and during the event hosted in Las Vegas we expect to see some of the world's top Android OEMs reveal new, exciting products.

As we told you before, a new BlackBerry handset is expected to see the light of day at CES 2017. It's the last handset to be completely designed by BlackBerry, so it's something we should keep an eye out for.

BlackBerry will no longer be making smartphones from now on, leaving Chinese company TCL in charge to produce future BlackBerry branded devices.

The first one to be launched in 2017 will be the BlackBerry Mercury (or DTEK70) which according to TCL's recent tweet is going to be "imPRESSively designed – distinctly different". The company's CEO also added a four second teaser in order to give us a glimpse of the future BlackBerry model.

According to the rumour mill the phone should come equipped with a 4.5-inch touchscreen display plus a QWERTY keyboard. The device should be powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 625 processor in combination with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. Lenovo unveils Smart Assistant with Alexa support for $129.99

Posted: 03 Jan 2017 09:56 AM PST

With CES under way, companies have to show off their new products. Lenovo is one of them, taking the wraps off a brand new smart speaker.

Lenovo has officially announced the brand new Smart Assistant, which is an Amazon Echo-looking smart speaker that also supports Alexa for good measure. That means owners will be able to ask the smart-enabled speaker to play music, answer questions, and more. It's equipped with far-field microphones, so it should be able to pick up your voice easily enough, even when you're not right next to it.

The Smart Assistant features a 10W woofer and a 5W treble, and it will retail for $129.99 when it goes on sale in May. Lenovo is also launching a Harman Kardon version of its Smart Assistant, which will be outfitted in an all-black shell and feature a two-inch sound cavity. It will retail for $179.99.
