All six original Mega Man games are now on the Play Store, and yup, they're terrible

Posted: 04 Jan 2017 04:11 PM PST

image (4)Please don't give Capcom any money for its official Mega Man Android ports. The company hasn't earned any. You'd think that almost 30-year-old games, designed to run on a console with less computational power than the average DVD player, could be ported to Android with relative ease. You would be wrong. All six of the original Nintendo Entertainment System Mega Man games are now on the Play Store for two bucks a pop, and they're just as good as that trailer indicated they would be.

ASUS ZenFone AR with 23MP camera, ZenFone 3 Zoom with dual rear cameras now official

Posted: 04 Jan 2017 03:25 PM PST

Earlier this week, the ASUS-branded ZenFone AR leaked out, previewing what would be the newest Google Tango- and Daydream VR-ready smartphone.

Now ASUS is ready to officially announce not only the ZenFone AR, but also the ZenFone 3 Zoom, both of which have a big focus on the cameras as well as their own unique twists. Both handsets will launch this year.

Breaking it down, the ZenFone AR boasts a 5.7-inch 2560×1440 AMOLED screen, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor under the hood and 8GB of RAM. It will run Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box and will fully support Google's Daydream VR platform.

The biggest feature for the ZenFone AR is the 23-megapxel camera on the back as well as depth sensing and motion tracking cameras. With all of these features together, the ZenFone AR makes it possible to enjoy augmented reality features through Google Tango.

ASUS says the ZenFone AR will launch sometime in the second quarter of 2017, but no pricing has been revealed just yet.

ASUS ZenFone 3 Zoom

The other big new addition to the lineup is the ZenFone 3 Zoom, which boasts a dual camera system on the back. Both of the cameras have 12-megapixel resolutions, but one features a 25mm wide angle lens while the other 59mm lens that boasts 2.3x optical zoom. The camera system also offers phase detection autofocus, an upgraded laser focus system, and subject tracking autofocus.

The ZenFone 3 Zoom also boasts a 5000mAh battery, which ASUS says enables the phone can last more than 40 days on a single charge in standby mode. The ZenFone 3 Zoom also features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor.

ASUS confirms the ZenFone 3 Zoom will launch in February of this year, but won't say how much it will cost when it arrives.

HTC One X10 leaks out with 5.5-inch display

Posted: 04 Jan 2017 11:45 AM PST

It's been over a year since the HTC One X9 was launched, and so HTC has a new device coming to market to replace it.

According to a report from VentureBeat, we're getting our first look at the HTC One X10 which, if the information pans out, will be more of a refresh than an actual upgrade. Specifically, it sounds like HTC will be using a slightly less powerful MediaTek MT6755V/C processor clocked at 1.9GHz in the One X10, compared to the 2.2GHz octa-core MT6795 in the One X9.

The upcoming One X10 will keep the One X9′s 3GB of RAM and 32GB of built-in storage, while the display will feature a 5.5-inch 1080p HD display.

The one improvement appears to the One X10′s cameras. On the back, the One X10 will boast a 16.3MP camera, while the front will have a 7.9MP shooter. The One X9 features a 13MP and 5MP, respectively.

The report states that HTC will launch the One X10 sometime in later this month, but there's no exact date to circle on the calendar just yet.

Here’s Possible Evidence the Galaxy Note7 Disaster Wasn’t Caused by Batteries

Posted: 04 Jan 2017 11:43 AM PST

Samsung's investigation into what caused the Galaxy Note7 disaster has been completed, but the results are expected to be revealed sometime towards the end of this month.

While we wait for Samsung to make the official announcement, a recent report related to the upcoming Galaxy S8 flagship sheds some light on what the verdict is going to be.

According to The Android Soul, the Galaxy S8 will take advantage of Samsung SDI batteries, the same which were suspected of causing the fiery Galaxy Note7 problems in the first place. During the initial investigation, Samsung said that the Samsung SDI batteries inside the phablet were to blame for the handset's overheating problems.

But as the replacement units powered by Amperex batteries started shipping out, customers noticed the same problems. So maybe, just maybe the batteries weren't the culprit after all?

The report says the Galaxy Note7 disaster was caused by some "strategic defect" but doesn't provide any other details. We guess we'll just have to wait for Samsung's official report, which will most likely say that batteries weren't to blame for the explosions.

There's no way Samsung would risk another calamity like the Galaxy Note7. The Galaxy S8 is meant to restore the Korean tech giant to its former glory, so the company will make extra sure the flagship doesn't come with any major defects. Fingers crossed, Samsung!

Swarovski’s First Smartwatch Will Run on a Snapdragon 835

Posted: 04 Jan 2017 11:43 AM PST

CES 2017 has opened its doors and is welcoming tech enthusiasts from all over the world to see the latest products.

Chipmaker Qualcomm was also present at the event to talk more about its next-gen premium chipset, the Snapdragon 835. We expect the SoC which is based on the 10nm FinFet process to power this year's most anticipated flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S8, Xiaomi Mi6 or HTC 11.

But as it turns out the first device to be announced with Snapdragon 835 isn't actually a smartphone…but a smartwatch. Which comes from an unlikely source.

Qualcomm announced it was partnering up with diamond producer Swarovski for their first Android Wear smartwatch. The Austrian company is not a stranger to intelligent timepieces. If you remember a while back Swarovski produced a custom made strap for the Samsung Gear S and Huawei Watch.

Well now the luxury goods producer is diving head first into the world of smartwatches. The wearable will probably be one of the fastest on the market, given that it will have a Snapdragon 835 under the hood and will run Android Wear 2.0 out of the box.

If you find this announcement enticing let us tell you the smartwatch is bound to be show its face at Beselworld 2017 which will start on March 23.

Swarovski teases Android Wear smartwatch

Posted: 04 Jan 2017 10:40 AM PST

Traditional watchmakers haven't been shy when it comes to releasing smartwatches these days, and it looks like Swarovski is ready to get into the market, too.

Swarovski has officially teased a brand new partnership with Qualcomm and Google to launch an Android Wear-based smartwatch. The company isn't opening up about the details of the watch just yet, but it does say that it will reveal more about the upcoming wearable at Baselworld 2017, an event that takes place between March 23 and March 30.

The teaser isn't completely without its hints, though. It does seem to heavily suggest that the upcoming smartwatch will be geared towards women. We don't have long to wait, at least, before the watch is revealed.

Posted: 04 Jan 2017 09:55 AM PST

TCL has been teasing the upcoming arrival of another BlackBerry with a physical keyboard, and today the device has been revealed.

The new BlackBerry is being officially shown off by TCL. Known by the codename "Mercury" for now, it looks like a traditional BlackBerry handset with a candybar design and physical keyboard.

Interestingly enough, the physical keyboard features a fingerprint reader in the space bar and capacitive touch controls for users to scroll through content.

TCL also revealed that the handset will boast a USB Type-C port and that it will run Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box. Unfortunately, TCL didn't share any additional details regarding specifications, but it says that more information should be revealed around the time that Mobile World Congress rolls around next month.

What do you think? Are you in the market for a new BlackBerry device with a physical keyboard?

Google Photos on Android allows users to select different cover images for detected faces

Posted: 04 Jan 2017 08:41 AM PST

photos

The face detection feature in Google Photos is exceptionally good at picking people out of crowds and identifying known faces in very low resolution pictures. There are even some pretty killer algorithms for selecting pictures to use in collages and animations, but when it comes to choosing cover photos for those detected faces, it's not always perfect. Fortunately, Google Photos now allows users to select a different "feature photo" for contacts in face detection.

Qualcomm releases more info on Snapdragon 835

Posted: 03 Jan 2017 04:56 PM PST

Qualcomm's latest and greatest is the Snapdragon 835, a chip based on a new 10nm design. This makes it 35% smaller and 25% easier on the battery than the previous Snapdragon 820.

Qualcomm is touting new features of the chip, including Daydream support, 3D positional audio, improved zoom and stabilization for the camera, Bluetooth 5.0 certification, a new LTE modem, 2×2 11ac MU-MIMO Wi-Fi, and three layers of security.

Of course, most people will just notice performance and battery life. More efficiency and a smaller size means better battery life and bigger batteries (or just thinner phones, if we're unlucky), and these are changes enough to please us. Hopefully they won't have issues with lag and thermal throttling!
