ASUS ZenFone 3 Zoom Launches with Huge 5,000 mAh Battery

Posted: 05 Jan 2017 01:08 PM PST

CES might not be the most exciting when it comes to phones, but ASUS came to the event armed with a new device that smartphone photography lovers will be ecstatic about. Say hello to the ASUS ZenFone 3 Zoom.

The phone is a successor of the ZenFone Zoom, but interestingly enough it tones down the zoom capabilities. Compared to the predecessor, the ZoneFone 3 Zoom features 2.3X magnification capacities, down from 3X.

The magnification effect is produced on one of the two lenses of the dual-camera setup. The other lens is of 12MP variety with f/1.7 aperture. The pair of lenses work in concert to produce the very popular Bokeh effect.

The ZenFone 3 Zoom takes advantage of and that is 4K video recording – something the ZenFone Zoom didn't have. On top of that, the phone features a larger 5,000 mAh battery which should ensure the device has a long life cycle.

When it comes to specs, the Zenfone 3 Zoom comes equipped a 5.5-inch display with 1080 x 1920-pixel resolution and Snapdragon 625 under the bonnet. There's no word yet on RAM and internal storage option. ASUS said these details will be announced at a later date.

The company boasted the ZenFone 3 Zoom is the thinnest 5.5-inch smartphone featuring a 7.9mm full metal body, which is indeed pretty sleek.

The ZoneFone 3 Zoom will be available for purchase sometime in February.

Samsung Galaxy S8 Leak Claims to Be First Look at Upcoming Smartphone [PIC]

Posted: 05 Jan 2017 01:08 PM PST

One of the most anticipated flagship phones of this year, the Samsung Galaxy S8 might have leaked today in all its glory. The image comes from Chinese social site, Weibo and depicts a phone in a luxurious golden color.

In concordance with recent leaks, the Galaxy S8 shown in the picture doesn't have a home button and appears to sport a curved display very much in the vein of the Galaxy S7 edge. Actually the phone does look a lot like the Galaxy S7 edge, which makes us suspect this might not be the real Galaxy S8 after all.

One thing we notice is missing are the on-screen capacitive navigation key and the Samsung logo is a bit too in your face. However, this might be a crude prototype of the phone. After all recent information coming out of the rumour mill seems to suggest that the Galaxy S8 launch will be delayed to the middle of April due to a shortage of components.

Another report seems to suggest that Samsung will begin mass production of the Galaxy S8 in March, so it the Galaxy S8 shown in the current image could actually be a prototype.

What do you think? Would you buy a Galaxy S8 that looked like this?

Google Calendar integrates data from Google Fit and Apple Health

Posted: 05 Jan 2017 12:20 PM PST

Fitness is important to a lot of people out there, and considering its importance on a daily basis, it's no surprise that Google would want to make it easier for Google Calendar users to keep up with their goals and data.

Beginning today, Google Calendar will integrate data from not only Google Fit, but also Apple Health. That information will be automatically added to the app, and it will update the goals inputted by the user on its own, which means that Calendar users won't have to input the data every day.

On top of that, Google Calendar is adding a brand new visual performance tracker, which should make it even easier for users to keep tabs on their goals on a daily basis.

The updated app is rolling out now.

First photo of Samsung’s Galaxy S8 allegedly leaks out

Posted: 05 Jan 2017 10:25 AM PST

Samsung has a big phone release ahead of them, especially on the heels of last year's Galaxy Note 7 fiasco, and they're hoping the Galaxy S8 is a device to set things back on track.

There have already been a few rumors regarding the upcoming flagship, including ones that suggest the handset will have minimized bezels and get rid of the capacitive buttons below the display. Thanks to a photo shared on SlashLeaks, the first look at the handset in the wild has been captured.

The minimized bezel below the display will drop the capacitive buttons, and instead replace them with a Samsung logo. We only get to see the front of the gold handset, so we don't get to see the back and discover what changes Samsung might have included.

The one thing to note here is that there aren't any software keys on display at all. Those can be hidden, yes, but it's just worth pointing out their lack of presence when it comes to a photo like this.

What do you think of the Galaxy S8, if this is indeed the handset set to launch later this year?

LG G6 will get away from modular design

Posted: 05 Jan 2017 10:25 AM PST

One of the major bullet points for the G5 last year was its modular design, which LG was obviously proud of back then.

But here we are in 2017, and the Life's Good crew has decided that while modularity may have seemed like a good idea at the time, it's not what the customers want. As a result, an LG spokesperson has confirmed to The Wall Street Journal that the company's next flagship, the G6, won't feature a modular design.

Instead, LG says that it will be focusing on aesthetics and usability, and teased that the handset will launch "in the very near future." Apparently the company is still trying to nail down a final release date, but did suggest that the handset's initial debut could very well arrive at Mobile World Congress, which starts at the end of February.

The G6 appears to be right around the corner, so what are you hoping to see from LG this year?

Huawei’s Mate 9 launching in US with Amazon Alexa

Posted: 05 Jan 2017 08:25 AM PST

Huawei has announced that its Mate 9 flagship will launch in the US on January 6, 2017. The company previously revealed at the Mate 9′s announcement that it would arrive in the US as part of the company's broader push into the US market.

In a surprise move, however, Huawei has announced that the Mate 9 will feature Amazon's Alexa voice assistant technology. This addition makes the Mate 9 the first smartphone on the market to use Alexa. The service will be available as part of an app on the Mate 9. Existing Mate 9 owners will soon receive an OTA update that will bring the Alexa tech to their devices as well.

The Mate 9 is the epitome of what Huawei stands for. The device features powerful performance with the company's Kirin 960 processor that uses Machine Learning to deliver consistently fast performance as time goes on. In the software, Huawei is using EMUI 5.0 to deliver the same consistent performance by analyzing user's habits and adapting to suit them. Huawei's crown jewel of the device is the rear dual camera array that is part of a collaboration with Leica.

We recently reviewed the Mate 9 and found ourselves quite impressed. The US market is notoriously saturated and difficult to break into, but with the Mate 9, Huawei may have a real shot at gaining a spot in consumers' minds.

The Huawei Mate 9 will be available in Moonlight Gray and Space Silver with pricing set at $599.99. Customers can find the Mate 9 at Best Buy, Amazon, Newegg and B&H.

Posted: 05 Jan 2017 01:15 AM PST

After appearing on the Google Pixel and Google Home, the Google Assistant will soon spread to even more devices.

Google Assistant is coming to Android TV. Google confirmed the news today alongside NVIDIA's announcement of the new SHIELD TV, which will support Google Assistant. You can also ask questions and get help with things in your life by asking Google Assistant something like "How long will it take to get to work?"

Android TV boxes aren't the only new devices that'll be getting Google Assistant this year. Google says that Assistant is coming to Android Wear 2.0 smartwatches as well as Android-powered in-car infotainment systems and other devices with the Embedded Google Assistant SDK.

NVIDIA's SHIELD line has come a long way since the original device's launch in 2013, and today the family gained another new member.

The new NVIDIA SHIELD TV is now officially official. Included with the new box will be Google Assistant, a new feature to Android TV. Google has optimized the Assistant experience for use on a TV, and with it, you can find content, ask questions, pause, fast-forward, and rewind.

NVIDIA today also announced the Spot. Shown below, this tiny AI mic accessory for the SHIELD TV plugs into your wall and gives you access to Google Assistant throughout your home. The NVIDIA Spot is priced at $49.99.
