Nokia 6 Is the Company’s First Comeback Smartphone

Posted: 09 Jan 2017 02:08 PM PST

What was promised has finally been delivered over the weekend. We've been teasing Nokia's return to the smartphone world for a few months now and finally HMD (the company that is in charge of manufacturing smartphones with the Nokia brand on them) announced the new Nokia 6 handset.

The device will launch in China for an affordable $330 CAD. There's no word yet if the phone will make it out into other markets, but we don't really think this is the case. Recent information indicates that HMD will launch 6 or 7 new Nokia designs this year, so the Nokia 6 is just the beginning.

The Finnish company has partnered up with popular retailer JD.com and long-time supporter of the Nokia brand to sell the Nokia 6 in the country. Now let's look at specs a little bit. The handset comes with a 5.5-inch display with 1920 x 1080-pixel resolution and runs on a Snapdragon 430 with Adreno 505 GPU. There's also 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage.

In the camera department we find a 16MP main camera with f/2.0 aperture plus PDAF (Phase Detection Auto Focus) plus an 8MP selfie camera. The phone runs Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box, thus making it one of the most affordable Nougat devices on the market.

What do you think? Would you buy a Nokia 6 if it ever launched in Canada?

Watch Out Siri, Cortana! Nokia’s ‘Viki’ Virtual Assistant Coming

Posted: 09 Jan 2017 01:58 PM PST

Over the weekend, the company that holds the rights to the Nokia brand now – HMD unveiled the first comeback Nokia smartphone. It's called the Nokia 6 and it's a mid-range affair coming with a 5.5-inch FHD display and a Snapdragon 430 under the hood.

It appears this phone will exclusively be sold in China, but according to recent information HMD is looking to unveil 6 to 7 Nokia phones this year.

Among this crop, there's certainly going to be some high-end models. And like a recently unearthed EU trademark seems to suggest, these upcoming premium phones will come bundling Nokia's own virtual assistant solution called Viki.

It's worth noting that Nokia Solution and Networks and not HMD filed for the patent. Anyway, it's no surprise Nokia will be offering the services of a virtual assistant in its upcoming flagships. After all virtual assistants are basically everywhere.

Apple uses Siri, Microsoft has Cortana, Google's solution is called Google Now and Samsung is soon going to debut Bixby in the Galaxy S8 (but the Note8 will get it too). So Nokia is soon going to join the bandwagon.

We believe that the virtual assistant will be a feature to be found only on Nokia's upcoming high-end phones, so we don't expect the Nokia 6 to get Viki treatment.

Google Tango and Lumin will spice up museum tours

Posted: 09 Jan 2017 12:02 PM PST

Augmented reality is one of the best ways to expand an experience, and for museums, where information is key, it's a perfect pairing.

Google has just announced that it will be bringing Tango, its AR-focused endeavor, to museums to help enrich the experience for visitors. Google will also be using what is called Lumin, which was developed by the Detroit Institute of Arts and GuidiGO.

When you visit the Detroit Institute of Arts, you can ask the person at the front desk for a Lenovo Phab 2 Pro, which will give you the full Tango and Lumin experience as you walk around.

Visitors to the DIA will be able to peer into a mummy's sarcophagus, for instance, as well as other detail-rich situations.

The Tango-enriched experience is currently only available at the DIA, but Google says it will be expanding the functionality to other museums in the future.

What do you think of Lumin?

Indie book publishing and reading service Inkitt brings its app to the Play Store

Posted: 09 Jan 2017 06:25 AM PST

There are many ways you can get your words published online these days, but if you're an aspiring author who takes themselves and their writing seriously, choices are more limited. I hadn't heard of Inkitt before, but from checking the site and reading the impressive editing and vetting process described in its guidelines, it looks like a good contender for indie authors who want to reach readers quickly, get feedback, and publish their writing without too much formalities and hassle.

Spotify is testing a redesigned now playing screen with full-screen album art

Posted: 08 Jan 2017 04:35 PM PST

Spotify

The Spotify app isn't bad, per se, but it could probably be better (similar to certain other music apps). It's good, then, that the company is testing a new material-esque now playing screen, which looks much improved compared to the old one.

It would appear this is being A/B tested at the moment, due to it being randomly turned on for certain users. It is not clear what version is running on this phone - no Android Police team members have this on their specific Spotify app install.
